Book An Exposition of the Four Gospels Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Exposition of the Four Gospels Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Thomas Adam and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Four Gospels, Vol. 2 of 2 But I hope that further consideration may shew that there is no book which exactly attains the Object I have had in View; and that that object may be held to be one of some importance. These Notes are intended for reading to households, and for the use of the middle and lower classes. They are meant to be explanatory of difficulties: simply in the sense of pointing out, in full and popular language, the ordinary and received meaning of such words and passages as persons of those classes need to have explained. The principle on which to do this - what to set down and what to omit - has been founded on ula\ny years' experience in Sun_day School teaching. What has appeared to be proper matter for question and answer, as regards explanation, in an intelligent upper class in a good Sunday School, I have thought suitable for exposition in these Notes. It is not that the Sunday Scholars, or the ordinary readers of the classes referred to, are ignorant of much that is here written; but that it may be of advantage to them in various ways to have it at hand, in plain and intelligible language. I have not aimed at direct practical teaching; but such teaching is inevitably involved to some, though not to a very great extent, in any attempt at explanation. So limited, however, I trust that such a publication may not be thought unsuitable for a layman to venture upon. It may indeed be thought that the absence both of full practical application, and of much of the deeper, wider, more mysterious and more spiritual meanings of the sacred text, leaves, in many cases, but a cold, dry, inadequate residuum. I can only reply that that larger field is unexhausted and inexhaustible; that it is for those to cultivate it whose profession and studies give them the proper authority to do so; and that simple readers will be then best fitted to benefit by that more advanced teaching, when they have a clear hold of the primary sense of the records with which it deals. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Harmonized Exposition of the Four Gospels, Vol. 2 In the essentials of the fact the parallelism is clearly maintained, but every Evangelist has certain details proper to himself. One of these details is the designation of time in Luke. According to the aforesaid Evangelist, the event took place on the second-first Sabbath (e'v aafiba'tq) Bee-repovrpdrrgi). Such a designation of time is not found elsewhere in the Holy Scriptures. We can not know its exact import, and must limit ourselves to conjectures. The term is omitted in the codices of the Vatican, Mt. Sinai, in Codex Regius L of Paris, and in numerous minuscule codices; it is not found in the Coptic, Peshitto, Syriac and Ethiopian versions. The critics \vestcott and Hort, though not rejecting the reading, place it in the margin. But by far the greater number of codices and author ities defend the reading. Weighing the critical data, we are led to the judgment that the obscurity of the word caused its omission from a certain number of codices; but its presence in so many others clearly proves that it was in the original of Luke. We believe therefore that the genuineness of the passage cannot be reasonably doubted. The data of tradition are so discrepant that it is profitless to review them. This truth is clear, that the text fixes the event on a certain Sabbath-day that was called second-first, on account of its relation to some starting point of enumeration. We shall be aided in determin ing the day by some notice of the Jewish feasts. It must have been at that time of the year when the harvest was ripening, but not yet gathered. Now the Hebrews began their sacred year with the Pasch. This began on the evening of the four teenth day of the month called Abib. Abib means an ear ofthe first-first Sabbath, and all the subsequent feasts were (1 in reference to it. On the day following the great Sab h of the fifteenth day of Abib, the Jews were hidden to sent a sheaf of the firstfruits of the corn to the priest, who tuld offer it to the Lord by elevating it towards the four nts of the compass. Now from this day, the Hebrews were den enumerate seven full weeks to the feast of the Pentecost, ich was the second great feast in the Jewish calendar. It is led Pentecost, from the Greek Ila/7771106735 the 50th day. In the Hebrew books of the Old Testament it is called by that designation, but it is called the Feast of eks, since it occurred on the first day after a week of weeks r the Passover. - Exod. XXXIV. 22. It is also called the 1st of the Firstfruits of the Harvest, [exod XXIII. Ause it was at the wheat harvest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, Vol. 2: Notes, 1838-1840 As we have a Latin and an English original of Napier's Plaine Discoverie of the Apocalypse, and are sure that there existed a Hebrew and a Greek of Josephus' Jewish War (jos. War, pref. 1 so also it is said that St. Matthew's Gospel was at first written by him in Hebrew, A. D. 36 or 38 and again, after some interval, in Greek.3 That the first published Gospel should be in the language of the Jews, tallies precisely with their being the sole oh jects of Jesus' immediate ministry (rom. Xv. 8, Acts xiii. And the first care of the Apostles; while it was obviously important that they should have on record in their own tongue our Lord's assurances of the Gentiles' admission to the covenant (e. Gr. Xx. 1 which St. Matthew writes without any expla nation or hint of fulfilment; as the admission itself was also a matter of perplexity to his colleagues, and of stumbling to his compatriots. The single reason for questioning the belief of this report is the total loss of the Hebrew copy; the loss nevertheless is not without satisfactory explanation. In the fall of J u dsea, the Hebrew would by degrees disappear as the Greek circulated more and more, the Jews caring nothing for its preservation; and when it was par tially corrupted by the Nazarenes and, to a still greater degree, by the Ebionites, the orthodox pro bably destroyed every thing that came in their way bearing the semblance of the Hebrew copy.
