Book An Exposition of the Epistles of Saint Paul to the Galatians and Colossians

Download or read book An Exposition of the Epistles of Saint Paul to the Galatians and Colossians written by Morgan Dix and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Epistles of Saint Paul to the Galatians and Colossians: According to the Analogy of the Catholic Faith It is not necessary to recapitulate the principles on which the following commentary is based for that would be but to repeat what was said in the preface to the Exposition of the Epistle to the Romans. But they are held as matured convictions and the materials with which they are now to be enforced have been gathered at intervals during the past ten years. The attention of the humble-minded reader is directed in particular to the epistle to the Colossians, in the belief, that the view of the theory and method of the Spiritual life there taken is directly the reverse of that which modern Protestant sects continue to advance as the only evangelical one. The writer has aimed at exhibiting that contrast as forcibly as he could. Yet, if the task has not been accomplished to the satisfaction of the reader, let him close this volume, and take the original once more, and read, and revolve, and think it out for himself, as the writer has done and surely he must at length see the truth. That epistle is but an expansion of this thought - that the life of the child of god begins in the reception of Sacramental grace, and that his work and duty are to preserve the divine gift instrumentally conveyed to him in bap tism. It will be found impossible to accommodate this epistle, satisfactorily, to the modern scheme which substitutes a late moral conversion for an early spiritual change and he who, in a candid temper, shall have regarded, not separate expressions culled here and there by the hand of self-will, but the whole drift and course of the thought, must remain convinced that this is so. The writer may indeed have failed to make that clear to others which to himself seems clearer than the day but, while he is ready to lay that failure at the door of his incompetency, he would urge and affirm that the view which he has taken of the Apostle's meaning is, notwithstanding, correct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistles of St. Paul to the Colossians and Philemon TO urge these and the like truths this letter is written. Its central principle is the sovereign and exclusive mediation Of Jesus Christ, the God-man, the victorious antagonist Of these dead speculations, and the destined conqueror Of all the doubts and con fusions Of this day. If we grasp with mind and heart that truth, we can possess our souls in patience, and in its light see light where else is darkness and uncertainty. SO much then for introduction, and now a few words Of comment on the superscription of the letter contained in these verses. I. Notice the blending Of lowliness and authority in Paul's designation Of himself. An Apostle Of Christ Jesus through the will Of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. Paul's Epistles to the Colossians and to Philemon: A Revised Text With Introductions, Notes, and Dissertations In the commentary, as well as in the introduction, it has been a chief aim to illustrate and develope the theological conception of the Person of Christ, which underlies the Epistle to the Colossians. The Colossian heresy for instance owes its importance mainly to the fact that it throws out this conception into bolder relief. To this portion of the subject therefore I venture to direct special attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle of Paul to the Colossians N the great subject of the Epistle to the Colossians our English classic is Marshall's Gospel zwysz'ery of Sanelifieafz'on. This work was first published in 1692, and has ever since been regarded as unapproached in describing faith's use of the Christ's fulness for all possible human requirement; directions 3, 4, and 12 being peculiarly valuable. We have several other works in English richly suggestive of the topic generally; Bishop Hall's C/zrz'st Mystical and Mr. Polhil's Cfirz'szzes z'n Corde being prominent. S. Bernard's Sermons to kz's Monks on the Carztz'eles is a Latin fountain of similarly directed mystical thought. For practical exhibition of Paul's teaching on personal daily intimacy between Christ and His people, Rutherford's letters have never been equalled, nor are likely to be on this side our Lord's return. In the following commentary I have endeavoured to reproduce the thought of the letter in the verbal expression employed by the Apostle. Two words determine that thought pleroma (fulness) and musterion (secret). By keeping these prominent, and giving them their Pauline adjustment to each other, the letter has been found much less difficult to follow. It is because I have found this for myself that I have ventured to adopt it in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
