Book An Exploration of the Relationships Between Academic Enablers and Middle School Achievement

Download or read book An Exploration of the Relationships Between Academic Enablers and Middle School Achievement written by Theresa Strunk and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study was to explore the relationships between middle school students' academic enablers and their later academic achievement. Based on previous research, five student academic enablers (academic self-efficacy, academic motivation, interpersonal skills, academic engagement, and study skills) were used to predict students' year-end standardized achievement scores after controlling for cognitive ability, prior achievement, gender, and free/reduced lunch status. The final data set included 733 students in Grades 6-8 at one suburban middle school in the Northeast U.S. It was hypothesized that all enablers would demonstrate small to moderate relationships with language arts and math achievement across all grade levels. After controlling for cognitive ability and student background characteristics, none of the academic enablers substantially added to the prediction of achievement test scores. Although math self-efficacy demonstrated a statistically significant relationship with later math achievement in all grades, this relationship was negligible in magnitude. These results were similar to several previous studies that included cognitive ability or previous achievement in the models. Results indicated that cognitive ability and previous achievement continue to have the greatest impact on academic achievement gains at the middle school level as they do in younger and older populations. Limitations of the study, implications of the findings, and directions for future research are addressed.

Book Promoting Positive Learning Experiences in Middle School Education

Download or read book Promoting Positive Learning Experiences in Middle School Education written by Gaines, Cherie Barnett and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-01-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Declining academic performance, along with a growing apathy of students toward the value of education, demonstrates that students in the United States public education system do not recognize the value of a positive experience in middle schools. A plethora of research and writing has been done on elementary schools and secondary schools, but middle school education, as a whole, has been left behind. For this reason, there is the need for current research on all aspects and topics that may contribute to middle school student success. Promoting Positive Learning Experiences in Middle School Education focuses on the ideal conditions for maximizing student success and engagement in middle school education. The chapters take a deeper look into the modern tools, technologies, methods, and theories driving current research on middle school students, their teachers, their classroom environment, and their learning. Highlighting topics such as curriculum reform, instructional strategies and practices, effective teaching, and technology in the modern classroom, this book is ideally intended for middle school teachers, middle school administrators, and school district administrators, along with practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, academicians, and students interested in middle school education and student success.

Book Relationship Between Mindset and Student Achievement in a Virtual Independent Study Charter Middle School

Download or read book Relationship Between Mindset and Student Achievement in a Virtual Independent Study Charter Middle School written by Kendra C. Bailey and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if relationships exist between a particular mindset and student success. The participants were middle school teachers, parents, and students from a virtual independent study charter school in California who were a part of a hybrid program of virtual and in-person instruction called Community Day. Seven teachers completed a questionnaire that asked general information about their teaching background and asked them to rate their agreeance with statements related to intelligence and various methods to teach and learn mathematics. Thirty-seven parents and 45 students responded to survey questions that asked general student information and asked them to rate their agreeance with statements related to intelligence and various methods to learn mathematics. The statements were scored using a point system for each response and analyzed to determine which mindset each participant demonstrated: fixed, growth, or cannot be categorized. The mindset of participants was then cross-referenced with students' math grade to determine if relationships exist between mindset of the participants and student achievement. After these data were analyzed and compared, findings indicated that students with a growth mindset do demonstrate higher achievement scores in math. However, some adventitious findings revealed results that did not correlate with the reviewed literature. Overall, there is a need for more research to be done using alternative models of schools to determine if the results from this study are consistent with other independent study schools.
