Book A Study of Locus of Control Orientation Racial Identity Attitudes and Faculty student Interactions of African American Students

Download or read book A Study of Locus of Control Orientation Racial Identity Attitudes and Faculty student Interactions of African American Students written by Jerri Denise Drummond and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results showed that locus of control was a significant predictor of faculty-student interactions. Racial identity attitudes were not a significant predictor of faculty-student interactions; however, there was a significant interaction effect between locus of control and racial identity attitudes. The type of institution a student attended was a significant predictor of faculty-student interactions, especially when the interaction effect of locus of control and type of institution was considered. Results of this study contribute to the literature on faculty-student interactions among African-American students.

Book Our Racist Heart

Download or read book Our Racist Heart written by Geoffrey Beattie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few people today would admit to being a racist, or to making assumptions about individuals based on their skin colour, or on their gender or social class. In this book, leading psychologist Geoffrey Beattie asks if prejudice, more subtle than before, is still a major part of our everyday lives. Beattie suggests that implicit biases based around race are not just found in small sections of our society, but that they also exist in the psyches of even the most liberal, educated and fair-minded of us. More importantly, the book outlines how these ‘hidden’ attitudes and prejudices can be revealed and measured, and how they in turn predict behaviours in a number of important social situations. Our Racist Heart? takes a fresh look at our racial attitudes, using new technology and experimental approaches to show how unconscious biases influence our everyday actions and thinking. These groundbreaking results are brought to life using the author’s own experiences of class and religious prejudice in Northern Ireland, and are also discussed in relation to the history of race, racism and social psychological theory.

Book Racial Identity Attitudes of African American Students and Student Developmental Tasks

Download or read book Racial Identity Attitudes of African American Students and Student Developmental Tasks written by Richard Charles Peagler and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study sought to examine the relationship between racial identity attitudes and the mastery of developmental tasks of African-American students at predominantly White colleges. The research hypotheses were as follows: (H1) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Pre-encounter stage attitudes will be less likely to report mastery of the developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. (H2) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Encounter and Internalization stage attitudes will be more likely to report the mastery of the developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. (H3) African-American students at predominantly white colleges with Immersion stage attitudes will be less likely to report mastery of developmental tasks of Clarifying Purpose, Mature Interpersonal Relationships, Academic Autonomy and Salubrious Lifestyle. The author used two theoretical models: the Theory Racial Identity Development, Cross (1971) and Chickering's (1969) Theory of Psychosocial Development. To operationalize both theories, the Racial Identity Attitudes Scale, Parham and Helms (1981) was used to measure racial identity attitudes and the Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Inventory was used to measure student development (Winston, Miller, and Prince, 1987). The sample consisted of 119 African-American college students who were members of the Black Student unions at three predominantly White public colleges. Hierarchical multiple regression was used to determine the relationship between personal background characteristics, the racial identity attitudes and student developmental tasks. Pre-encounter (anti-Black) and Immersion (pro-Black) stage attitudes were less likely to report the mastery of the tasks associated with mature interpersonal relationships. Students with Encounter (pro-Black) stage attitudes were more likely to report the mastery of the Establishing and Clarifying Purpose task and Salubrious Lifestyle. Personal background characteristics showed the strongest effects. For Mature Interpersonal Relationships tasks, the strongest effects were class level and gender. Females were more likely to report the mastery of the Mature Interpersonal Relationships task. Four effects were stronger when Salubrious Lifestyle was examined. These were gender (males were likely to report the mastery of the Salubrious Lifestyle task while in college), income level, the percentage of Blacks in one's high school at the time of graduation, and the predominant race of teachers at the time of graduation. The findings of this study have implications for student affairs professionals such as counselors and residence life staff.

Book Implicit Racial Bias across the Law

Download or read book Implicit Racial Bias across the Law written by Justin D. Levinson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-16 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite cultural progress in reducing overt acts of racism, stark racial disparities continue to define American life. This book is for anyone who wonders why race still matters and is interested in what emerging social science can contribute to the discussion. The book explores how scientific evidence on the human mind might help to explain why racial equality is so elusive. This new evidence reveals how human mental machinery can be skewed by lurking stereotypes, often bending to accommodate hidden biases reinforced by years of social learning. Through the lens of these powerful and pervasive implicit racial attitudes and stereotypes, Implicit Racial Bias across the Law examines both the continued subordination of historically disadvantaged groups and the legal system's complicity in the subordination.

Book The Impact of Racial Identity on Perceived Microaggressions Racial Socialization and Psychological Outcomes

Download or read book The Impact of Racial Identity on Perceived Microaggressions Racial Socialization and Psychological Outcomes written by Terrence Harper II and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The negative psychological consequences of racial prejudice and discrimination in the lives of African Americans have been well documented. Recently, researchers have investigated how racial identity status attitudes may influence the perception of discrimination (i.e., it has been suggested that racial identity may act as a buffer against experiencing negative affect as a consequence of exposure to racial discrimination). While this hypothesis has received increased attention in the literature of late, current studies testing said hypothesis have not examined this association by using the recent advances in the conceptualization of subtle discrimination (i.e., microaggressions). As such, the purpose of this study was to examine whether racial identity status attitudes moderate the relationship between perceived discrimination (quantified using the Racial and Ethnic Microaggressions Scale) and psychological functioning. A secondary hypothesis was that racial identity would mediate the relationship between racial socialization and psychological functioning. The study recruited 153 African American participants from undergraduate psychology courses at a medium sized Midwestern university. We found that racial identity attitudes moderated the association between the experience of microaggressions and endorsing symptoms of general psychological distress. Additionally, racial identity was found to partially mediate the association between racial socialization and psychological functioning.

Book Exploring the Moderating Effect of Self esteem on the Relationship Between Color blind Racial Attitudes and Perceptions of Racial Discrimination Among African Americans and White Americans

Download or read book Exploring the Moderating Effect of Self esteem on the Relationship Between Color blind Racial Attitudes and Perceptions of Racial Discrimination Among African Americans and White Americans written by Darrien E. Hawkins and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was an exploration of the relationship between self-esteem, color-blind racial attitudes, and the perception of racial discrimination among African Americans and White Americans. Race-based discrimination is a complex amalgamation of factors which coalesce to form racially discriminatory thoughts and feelings, which then inform discriminatory behaviors. Color-blind racial attitudes is one such factor which has been demonstrated to negatively impact the perception of acts of racial discrimination. Another factor which influences race-based discrimination is self-esteem. Based on established literature, I hypothesized that self-esteem would moderate color-blind racial attitudes, such that lower levels of self-esteem would diminish the perception of racial discrimination. A total of 118 participants completed a web-based survey, which included demographic information, a vignette which captured an instance of race based discrimination, measures of color-blind racial attitudes, self-esteem, and perception of racial discrimination. Results of a hierarchal regression indicate that self-esteem did not significantly moderate the relationship between CoBRA and perception of racial discrimination in the workplace. Results further indicated that the total scores for color-blind racial attitudes were a significant predictor of a person's decision about the influence of race in a workplace incident.

Book Relationships Among Racial Identity Integration Cognitive Processes and Attitudes Towards Racial Issues and Diversity Among Multiracial Individuals

Download or read book Relationships Among Racial Identity Integration Cognitive Processes and Attitudes Towards Racial Issues and Diversity Among Multiracial Individuals written by Jennifer Norie Moniz and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiracial individuals are often perceived to hold a unique perspective of the world because they have to manage multiple racial identities. The purpose of this study is to further examine how multiracial individuals manage their multiple racial identities and to explore the unique perspective they have on societal issues. In particular, this study explored the relationships of racial self-categorization, racial identity integration, cognitive processes, and attitudes towards racial issues and diversity amongst part-White multiracial individuals. Additionally, the study explored how multiracial individuals' socioeconomic status relates to these cognitive mechanisms and diversity attitudes. Through online advertisements and personal connections, a large sample (N = 809) of part-White multiracial adults was recruited throughout the United States. Several statistical analyses were used to test the hypotheses: MANOVA/ANOVA, multiple regression, correlational analysis, and structural equation modeling. The results indicated that among part-White individuals, (a) self-categorization predicted racial identity integration, cognitive processes, and attitudes toward racial issues and diversity (Hypothesis 1); (b) racial identity integration and cognitive processes had an effect on attitudes toward racial and diversity issues (Hypothesis 2); (c) cognitive processes mediated the relationships between racial identity integration and attitudes toward racial and diversity issues (Hypothesis 3); and (d) cognitive flexibility, dialectical self-views, and racial identity integration were intercorrelated (Hypothesis 4). Lastly, multiracial individuals' education attainment and family's SES during upbringing had varying effects on their perception of racial and diversity-related issues. Overall, this study provides a comprehensive framework to describe the lived experiences of multiracial individuals living in the United States. Implications for clinical practice and future multiracial research are discussed.
