Book New Graduate Nurses Perceptions of Their Received Support in the First Year Work Transition

Download or read book New Graduate Nurses Perceptions of Their Received Support in the First Year Work Transition written by Joan S. Palladino and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2009 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the transition experience of new graduate nurses during their first work experience after graduating from a baccalaureate undergraduate nursing program. A case study approach was used to examine a community hospital in Connecticut. A random sample of baccalaureate prepared new graduate nurses who graduated in May 2007, and were in the first year of working as registered nurses, was chosen. The research question examined how new graduate nurses perceived the supports provided within their transition experience. The study examined the supports through Benner's (1982) developmental theory of nursing. The four supports included: support during orientation, support from experienced nurses, supports to develop time management skills and support from their undergraduate nursing education. The four research questions addressed each of these supports. The study used three methods of data collection. Twelve new graduate nurses completed the quantitative survey, eight participated in the individual interview and four new graduate nurses participated in the focus group interview. The conclusions included the following: new graduate nurses were supported by the learning environment of the orientation; new graduate nurses perceived a supportive network was available to them within the hospital environment; time management skills are essential for the transition to entry nursing practice; new graduate nurses were assisted by their undergraduate school experiences during the transition period. Recommendations for practice have implications for making new graduates successful in a nursing career. Hospital orientations should provide preceptors who encourage autonomy and are consistent and provide emotional support and need to provide support in the transition period by mentoring and encouraging guidance from experienced nurses. Hospitals also need to provide clinician guidance and organizational resources to assist with time management, and offer intern programs to students prior to graduation. Undergraduate nursing programs should incorporate more clinical time to help the new graduate nurse transition into nursing practice. Recommendations for further research might involve a qualitative in-depth study regarding time management as well as an in depth case study examining new graduate nurses perceived level of support during the orientation period.

Book excerpt: Forty years after Kramer's (1974) seminal work, Reality Shock, new graduate nurses continue to have difficulty transitioning to the registered nurse (RN) role. The purpose of this phenomenological study explores the lived experience of new graduate nurses who completed a Veterans Affairs externship program in their senior year of nursing coursework and its perceived impact on their successful transition into the practice role 3-24 months following graduation. Benner's (1984) Novice-to-Expert Model, Karmer's (1974) Reality Shock Theory, and Selder's (1989) Life Transition Theory support a framework for this study. Twelve telephone interviews were conducted using van Manen's (1990) method for researching the lived experience. One overarching theme "feeling confident" and three main categories, "transitioning to the RN role," "making decisions," and "interacting with professionals," were identified from the data. Externship programs assist the student to comfortably and smoothly transition as a new graduate nurse by offering additional clinical and practice experiences. Given the complexity of today's health care environment, there is a growing need to better prepare the graduate nurse for their transition into nursing practice. Externship programs can serve this purpose.

Book Who s Looking After Us Now

Book excerpt: Anecdotal evidence from third-year nurses suggests students experience high levels of apprehension about entering the workforce. Whether such levels of nervousness about initial professional experience can be attributed to perceived or actual lack of competence, or indeed a lack of confidence in ability, is unclear. Graduate nurse programs were set up to help orientate new graduates on entering the workforce. Difficulties occur when the organizations, from which new graduates initially receive their experience, reinforce prevailing traditional attitudes and ideologies which tend to overshadow, or at the very least, initially intimidate the 'raw recruit'. A phenomenological approach was used to explore garduate nurses' perceptions, experiences and reflections during their transition from students to registered nurses. The main aim of the research was to gain a depth of understanding of the process undergone by nurses as they 'lived through' the transition from student to graduate nurses. To achieve this, in-depth, one-on-one interviews were conducted. Five graduate nurses who attended the graduate nurse program at a large regional hospital participated in the study. Data analysis identified the majority of new graduates interviewed travelled along an intricate continuum in their transition year. As graduates progressed from one phase to the next, they identified opposing feelings. The reasons for such a dichotomy of experiences is discussed within emerging themes of anticipation, vulnerability, seeking support, high expectations, rites of passage, the induction process, internal struggle, reality versus self doubt, swimming against the tide, the process of remoulding, and surviving, and seeing the light. Evident throughout was the overwhelming desire of graduates to 'make it', to 'not give up'. Implications for academics and health organizations, relating to the concerns of new registered nurses are addressed in an attempt to put in place effective strategies that will assist in the smooth transition from student to confident registered nurse.000000000000.

Book Exploring the Factors that Influence Nurse Practitioner Student Perception of Role Transition from Registered Nurse

Download or read book Exploring the Factors that Influence Nurse Practitioner Student Perception of Role Transition from Registered Nurse written by Vaneet K. Kaler and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nurse practitioners are registered nurses (RN) who have gone on to receive specialized training and education with a higher educational degree to enable them to be prepared to progress into this advanced practice role. The evidence reveals that most NPs undergo a series of stages from novice to mastering the role transition as an expert care provider. Transitioning into a new role can be both exciting and stressful. In this time of increased need for qualified primary care providers, it is essential that graduates of FNP programs transition successfully into practice following graduation. The transition from the RN to the NP requires a change in role from one who follows a plan of care to one who creates a plan of care. NP students, near graduation, are transitioning into the role of novice nurse practitioners. They may experience nervousness and a sense of incompetence as they transition into the role. To ensure the successful transition of the RN to the NP role, identification of factors and strategies that positively influence this transition need to be identified and implemented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Book Transitioning from Nursing Student to Successful Graduate Registered Nurse

Download or read book Transitioning from Nursing Student to Successful Graduate Registered Nurse written by Peter Mellor and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a yearly basis, thousands of students successfully complete their nursing degree and are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Entry into practice is primarily via health services who offer employment via graduate transition programs in the form of one year fixed-term contracts. Transition programs and the graduate nurse have been the subject of research over a number of decades. The research focus has been on the nature of the support provided and the lived experience of the graduate nurse. The purpose of this study was to generate further knowledge and theory about graduate nurses in transition, and to investigate how nursing students successfully transition to become graduate nurses. -- This study reaffirms the failure of education institutions and health care organisations to effectively support the passage of graduate nurses in their transition from student to professional registered nurse. An integrative review, a critical review of the literature, a literature review, and two grounded theory studies were undertaken to explore the spectrum of factors and perceptions that have an impact on graduate nurses and their passage to competent professional nurse in Australia from the perspectives of the graduates and the published research. -- The findings of my research have revealed that graduate nurses are succeeding, not as previously assumed due to the transition programs provided, but from other factors which are filling the gaps. The reliance on transition programs is fraught with problems, because it is customary for graduate nurses to initiate their own support, engage in self-care, and action self-advocacy strategies. This has prompted the development of a new model which uniquely advocates a self-support framework for the purpose of preparing nursing students to successfully navigate their transition year. This unique theoretical construction reconceptualises both the nature of the transitional support provided to graduate nurses, and university preparation for practice. Recommendations include development of curricula by universities to ensure that nursing students are prepared with the essential self-support skills to successfully transition to being a professional nurse.

Book New Graduate Nurses Perceptions of Their Professional Confidence

Download or read book New Graduate Nurses Perceptions of Their Professional Confidence written by Katrina M. Kreichelt and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is essential for new graduate nurses to possess professional confidence in order to practice and provide high quality care in the healthcare system today. Unfortunately, many new graduate nurses are entering the field without it. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore how new graduate BSN nurses perceive their professional confidence and what contributes to it during their first year of practice in the hospital setting. Data collection involved one individual semi-structured recorded conference interview with each of the five participants through the Zoom application which was transcribed verbatim. Each transcript was analyzed using manual content analysis with a constant comparative technique. Five major themes as well as four facilitators and four inhibitors to the development of professional confidence emerged. The five themes related to new graduate nurses' perception of professional confidence included knowledge and experience, interprofessional collaboration, independence, ongoing learner, and critical thinking. The four facilitators were positive feedback, support systems, asking for help, and perseverance. The four inhibitors were self-doubt, not being confident, being unprepared, and fear. These findings have implications for both undergraduate nursing education programs and nursing practice in the hospital setting. Undergraduate nursing programs should evaluate implementing strategies that better prepare new graduate nurses for their transition into the professional role. Healthcare professionals involved in developing new graduate nurses in practice, specifically nurse managers and preceptors, should be aware that they are entering practice without professional confidence and should focus efforts on what they can do to help promote its development." -- From page v.

Book Assessing the Efficacy of a Precepted Orientation in New Graduate Nurse Transition Into the Workplace

Download or read book Assessing the Efficacy of a Precepted Orientation in New Graduate Nurse Transition Into the Workplace written by James Law Hansen and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2008 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduate registered nurse transition into the workplace continues to be an arduous experience for most new nurses. Unrealistic job expectations, inadequate initial socialization, and increased work demands result in lowered job satisfaction and higher turnover among new nurses. Extant literature on graduate transition has identified "best practice" principles that can ease the transition, and foremost among them is a formal precepted orientation. This study used a quasi-experimental survey design to assess the effects of a formal precepted orientation on the self-perceived transition experiences of new graduates hired into a 140-bed rural county hospital. Perceptions of graduate registered nurses hired into hospital units that possess a formal orientation are described along with those of their counterparts hired into hospital units without a formal orientation. The convenience sample of new graduates (n = 10) found that both the control (n = 5) and experimental (n = 5) groups reported a positive transition when they had a supportive work environment and preceptors. This implies a supportive work environment may be as conducive to a positive transition as a formal precepted orientation. For the nurses in this study, a supportive work environment might have been established prior to hire, as many of the new graduates had spent time in the hospital during nursing school clinical rotations. Graduates' level of personal stress in transition was unaffected by a formal precepted orientation.

Book Exploring New Nurses Perceptions of a Nurse Residency Program

Download or read book Exploring New Nurses Perceptions of a Nurse Residency Program written by Chineda Hill and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health care facilities across the United States have implemented innovative approaches such as nurse residency programs to facilitate a successful transition to practice for new nurses. Many nurse residency programs evaluate their effectiveness by assessing critical thinking abilities, retention, return on investment, and job satisfaction. Evaluations are conducted using surveys and focus groups. However, there is a void in the literature that examines the effectiveness of a new nurse residency program from the participants' perspective; particularly asking the resident how the nurse residency program has advanced them to become a more competent professional. The theoretical model framing this investigation is Patricia Benner's novice to expert theory. The purpose of this qualitative case study is to understand participants' perceptions of a nurse residency program, specifically looking at how the program transitioned them from advanced beginner to competent nurse professional. The study sample included eight participants employed in a health care facility located in the southeastern United States. Open-ended research questions were designed to elicit the new nurses' perceptions of the effectiveness of a nurse residency program. Data collection was conducted using interviews and audio recordings. Emerging themes indicated that pre-experiences and expectations, leadership and professional development, stress and coping, supportive cohort, program improvements, and reflection on confidence and competency were fundamental elements for an effective nurse residency program. One recommendation from this study was for pre-residency assessment tools to be given to residents for customization to better facilitate the transition of new nurses to a competent professional.

Book Role Transition from Student to Professional Nurse

Download or read book Role Transition from Student to Professional Nurse written by Tammy Steffen and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition from student to professional nurse can be a stressful one. Especially when the student nurse becomes a professional nurse and discovers a gap between the anticipated ideal world and the harsh reality of the real world, the student nurse suffers from reality shock. As early as 1974, the concept of "reality shock" was described in the literature (Kramer, 1974). The purpose of this study was to determine if a nurse intern program eases role transition from student to professional nurse. The perceptions of professional nurses who participated in a nurse intern program while still in nursing school were explored. Professional nurses who had graduated from nursing school within the last six to twelve months and were nurse interns in a hospital setting prior to graduation from nursing school were eligible for participation in this study. The nurse also must have passed the nursing boards and be working as a professional nurse. Nurses volunteered to be interviewed about their experiences. The sample included eight participants who were professional nurses at a large metropolitan healthcare organization. The eight participants were interviewed once by the researcher in a private and quiet area. An interview guide was used during the interview process. The interviews were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim. The researcher coded the transcripts and used content analysis to identify themes. The nurse intern program eases the transition from student to professional nurse. The professional nurses commented on how comfortable and easy their transition was. The overall theme that emerged was a "seamless transition" which was expressed by the participants. There were three main categories that coincided with the overall theme of seamless transition which included being supported, learning through experience and being oriented. Most of the participants felt they would have been more stressed without the nurse intern program. Overall the transition from student to professional nurse was a smooth process for all eight of the participants.
