Teacher leadership is a not a new term in most educational circles, but many educators are still unclear about the benefits of using teachers as leaders let alone what it looks like in action. This book takes a deep dive into the experiences, good and bad, as five teacher leaders move in, move through, and move out of their first year as leaders in their respective buildings. In order to do truly appreciate and understand their experiences, qualitative research methods, mainly interviews and observations, were used to obtain valuable information from a first person perspective. It is imperative that the (voice) of actual teacher leaders is heard and documented for anyone who is interested in learning more about school leadership that falls somewhere in between the classroom and the administration. Quite possibly, the most beneficial feature for the reader is to discover what these teacher leaders learned along the way. Transitioning from the classroom to a leadership role is difficult for many, and the first year in this new role is certainly the most challenging. This book highlights the challenges, but most importantly, offers practical guidance to prepare for and overcome some of the impediments first-year teacher leaders face.

This book adds to a somewhat under-researched aspect of the field. It focuses both on a particular form of leadership – teacher leadership, and on a particular form of learning – professional development. It considers the connection between teacher leadership and professional development and the first chapter relates this connection to a ‘Leadership for Learning’ conceptual framework, developed through an international, three-year project. The book’s chapters explore teacher leadership and professional development from a number of perspectives, giving rise to three points of particular significance. Firstly the chapters show that, either by accident or design, there is a growing cadre of teacher leaders emerging from a multitude of professional development activities and initiatives. Secondly, a number of new conceptual frameworks are put forward, alongside the adaption and development of extant ones that add to the ever-increasing theorisation of educational leadership and professional development literature. Thirdly, the chapters provide evidence of the connections between leadership and learning as conceptualised in the ‘Leadership for Learning’ framework. Book excerpt: The enactment of teacher leadership can be challenged by both policy initiatives and school contexts (Anderson & Cohen, 2015; Hargreaves & Fullan, 2012). However, teachers can have a positive influence on each other and their broader school community by building capacity for leadership, innovation, and student achievement through the relationships, or networks, they develop and maintain (Baker-Doyle, 2015; Hovardas, 2016; Hunzicker, 2012; Moolenaar, Sleegers, & Daly, 2012). This single exploratory case study takes place in a Title I elementary school and uses a combination of Social Network Analysis and content analysis to uncover patterns in teacher professional networks, the context in which they exist, and teachers perceptions of the influence of these networks on their sense of themselves as teacher leaders. The study focuses on four constructs: teacher leadership, teacher efficacy, instructional innovation, and professional networks. The concept of social capital is used to explore the connection between networks and teacher leadership. Symbolic interactionism frames the analysis of the nature of relationships that emerge within these networks. Findings indicate that teachers linked their identities as leaders with a culture of leadership, exchange of advice, shared values, and high expectations for themselves and their students. Interview responses demonstrated they believed in their collective capacity to accomplish a shared mission of student achievement; they trusted in and supported each other through their professional networks.

It proposes to value leadership practices which emerge from collective concerns about learning and the realisation that collegial interactions offer opportunities for rich explorations of pedagogy and new understandings to be developed. The book draws upon illustrative examples from a longitudinal study of early career teachers, entitled “Teachers of Promise: Aspirations and realities”. It explores matters of personal ambition, support from significant others, and barriers to teacher leadership. It shows that these vary from context to context and individual to individual. Examples highlight the ways in which each teacher’s experience has been enabled and constrained by different considerations. In combination, the examples offered demonstrate the need for the teaching profession to be more systematic in identifying and supporting talented teachers who could be the leaders of learning for tomorrow. The book shows that individuals themselves need to have an openness to consider how they might become more effective teachers through their engagement in leadership work. This, it suggests, involves developing a different conception of leadership to counter the prevailing view that leadership is typically positional and defined by its distance from classroom teaching. The more promising portrayal is to link teacher leadership explicitly with learning.

Increasingly, teachers are taking a more central role in the daily functions of their schools and are becoming more involved in important decision-making that was once reserved for principals. While the topic of teacher leadership continues to garner support in the literature, little attention has been given to studying teacher leadership through an organizational lens. Closely related to the idea of teacher leadership is collective efficacy, an organizational concept that has previously been linked to student achievement. This study utilized the 17-item Teacher Leadership Inventory [Angelle, P. S., & DeHart, C. (2010). A four factor model of teacher leadership: Construction and testing of the Teacher Leadership Inventory. Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association, Denver, CO] and the 10-item Teacher Efficacy Belief Scale – Collective Form [Olivier, D. F. (2001). Teacher personal and school culture characteristics in effective schools: Toward a model of a professional learning community (Ph.D.). Available from ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global. (275848775)] to analyze correlations between teacher leadership, collective efficacy, and student achievement as measured by the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP). Findings showed a moderately strong, positive correlation between teachers’ perceptions of teacher leadership and collective efficacy at both the individual and school-level. No significant relationship was found between teacher leadership and student achievement and collective efficacy and student achievement.
