Book An Experimentally Based Prediction of the Static Performance in the Vertical Direction of an Air Cushion Landing System

Download or read book An Experimentally Based Prediction of the Static Performance in the Vertical Direction of an Air Cushion Landing System written by John L. Stuart and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to develop an analytical procedure which can be used to predict the static performance of an Air Cushion Landing System in the vertical direction. A mathematical model of an ACLS was developed which interrelates the system variables used to describe the force balance, the flow balance, and the geometric constraints which exist in the static mode. Since the mathematical model yielded only nine equations in thirteen unknowns, four additional equations were generated from experimental data taken from scale models of an ACLS-equipped CC-115 aircraft. Experimental values of trunk pressure, cushion pressure, and ground clearance at different gross weights for both floor-in and floor-out conditions are required as inputs to the prediction procedure. Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by TPRC at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemina tion phases of the activity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we have concluded that it will be in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by a well-known publishing house to assure improved service and better communication. Hence, effective with this Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences will be disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. As we embark on this new partnership with Plenum, we also initiate a new venture in that this important annual reference work now covers Canadian universities as well as those in the United States. We are sure that this broader base will greatly enhance the value of these volumes.

Book Landing impact Studies of a 0 3 scale Model Air Cushion Landing System for a Navy Fighter Airplane

Download or read book Landing impact Studies of a 0 3 scale Model Air Cushion Landing System for a Navy Fighter Airplane written by Trafford J. W. Leland and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was conducted in order to determine the landing-impact behavior of a 0.3-scale, dynamically (but not physically) similar model of a high-density Navy fighter equipped with an air cushion landing system. The model was tested over a range of landing contact attitudes at high forward speeds and sink rates on a specialized test fixture at the Langley aircraft landing loads and traction facility. The investigation indicated that vertical acceleration at landing impact was highly dependent on the pitch angle at ground contact, the higher acceleration of approximately 5g occurring near zero body-pitch attitude. A limited number of low-speed taxi tests were made in order to determine model stability characteristics. The model was found to have good pitch-damping characteristics but stability in roll was marginal.

Book Two Dimensional Air Cushion Landing System Peripheral Jet Confirmation Study

Download or read book Two Dimensional Air Cushion Landing System Peripheral Jet Confirmation Study written by John R. Rogers and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simplified two-dimensional peripheral jet theory for the equilibrium performance of an air cushion vehicle is investigated. The proposed theory intends to yield a rapid prediction of the actual flow rate and actual power requirements for an air cushion landing system in the hover condition. Nine specific nozzle configurations were tested to determine which resulted in the best power-height performance and whether the theory is able to predict the experimental performance. Three single peripheral jet configurations were tested at a trunk pressure of 80 psfg. Six distributed jet configurations were tested at a trunk pressure of 40 psfg. Effects of inward flow injection angles of 30 degrees and 60 degrees were investigated.

Book Theory of an Air Cushion Landing System for Aircraft

Download or read book Theory of an Air Cushion Landing System for Aircraft written by Kennerly H. Digges and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Air Cushion Landing System is a scheme to replace the wheeled landing gear on aircraft by a peripheral jet air cushion. The concept employs a flexible elastic membrane or 'trunk' which is attached to the bottom of the aircraft fuselage. During flight, the trunk shrinks elastically and hugs the bottom of the fuselage like a de-icing boot. When a flow of air is applied to the inside of the trunk, the elastic material stretches and forms an elongated doughnut-shaped protrusion on the underside of the aircraft. The air flow is ducted by the trunk to the fuselage periphery and exhausted through a large number of holes or slots. As a result, a pressure builds up under the aircraft when the ground is approached. The pressure is sufficient to support the aircraft and absorb its vertical landing velocity. The study develops analytical relationships between the variables associated with the Air Cushion Landing System. Included are the following: The derivation of a theory which predicts the static characteristics of the system; Analytical methods for predicting flow, jet height and power requirements; Curves which illustrate the interrelationships among the design variables; Computer programs for predicting the cross-sectional area and shape of the elastic trunk; The development and test of an analytical model which predicts the dynamic response of the system to landing impact; A discussion of the design considerations for the system.
