Book An Experimental Study of the Turbulent Mixing of a Subsonic and a Supersonic Jet in a Closed Duct

This book was released on 1965 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study is presented of the turbulent mixing of two coaxial air jets at subsonic-supersonic speeds in a closed duct. The investigation was undertaken to obtain velocity profiles and axial velocity decay results and other turbulent flow properties with existing PIBAL equipment, and to analyze the conditions needed for an improved experiment. By using a suitable total pressure it was possible to correctly expand the ducted outer jet to ambient conditions. Negligible pressure gradients were found in a considerable region of the duct and all static and stagnation pressure measurements were made in the regime. The axial velocity decay was thus determined. On the basis of the pressure measurements the flow field was divided into three mixing regions. In each of these regions the normalized velocity and total pressure profiles were correlated with values of the axial and radial coordinates. Jet boundaries were measured and an eddy viscosity function calculated. Detailed recommendations are made for improvements of this type of experiment. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of varying the exit pressure of a supersonic helium jet exhausting coaxially with two parallel supersonic air streams into a constant area duct were investigated. The method used to evaluate the mass entrainment rate was to measure helium molar concentration profiles and mass flux across the duct using a binary gas probe then calculate the mass entrainment into the helium jet. In order to conduct this study a novel binary gas probe was developed which allowed helium concentration and mass flux data to be obtained during continuous traverses across the supersonic flowfield. High exit pressure ratio (EPR) led to improved overall mixing compared to the baseline case with an EPR near unity. The high EPR caused low mass entrainment along the jet shear layers due to high convective Mach numbers and velocity ratios, but the high EPR caused oblique shocks to form which reflected off the duct walls and intersected with the helium jet several times causing significant mass entrainment due to numerous shock-shear layer interactions (SSLIs). A correlation between the vorticity generated during a SSLI and the mass entrainment into the jet was developed. (AN).

Book An Experimental Investigation at Supersonic Speeds of Annular Duct Inlets Situated in a Region of Appreciable Boundary Layer

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation at Supersonic Speeds of Annular Duct Inlets Situated in a Region of Appreciable Boundary Layer written by Wallace F. Davis and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annular air inlets situated several diameters behind the apex of various bodies of revolution were tested over the range of Mach numbers between 1.36 and 2.01 to determine the effects of relatively thick boundary layers upon the characteristics of duct entrances in supersonic flight. With all the models tested, the recovery of total pressure after diffusion to a low subsonic velocity was found to be approximately two-thirds of that through a normal shock wave occurring at the same free-stream Mach number. Schlieren photographs show that the cause of this low-pressure recovery is the interaction between the boundary layer and the back pressure in the diffuser; when the back pressure reaches only a moderate value, the boundary layer thickens and separates upstream of the duct entrance. Once separation has occurred, the flow through the inlet fluctuates violently.

Book Experimental Investigation of Supersonic Flows with Separated Regions in Ducts

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Supersonic Flows with Separated Regions in Ducts written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As applied to supersonic diffusers of different purpose and scramjet engines separation flows in various geometry ducts are investigated. Flow Mach and Reynolds numbers at the entrance to the ducts ranged from I to 6 and from 4. IO% to 7.1O%, respectively. The transition from supersonic flow to subsonic flow efficiency defined by the transition region length and pressure recovery. Separated and non- separated flow boundaries are determined. Hydraulic diameter concept expediency for separation flows analysis is appraised. Scramiet separation flows of different kinds were simulated. The influence on separation flows of such factors as off design modes of diffuser, combustors, non-uniformity of flow interaction of separated regions initiated by back pressure, secondary jets, cavities, struts and other kinds of elements of scramjet combustors are investigated. Several methods of separation control promoting flow stabilization and decreasing separated region lengths are offered.

Book Commercial Supersonic Technology

Download or read book Commercial Supersonic Technology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-02-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-speed flight is a major technological challenge for both commercial and business aviation. As a first step in revitalizing efforts by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to achieve the technology objective of high-speed air travel, NASA requested the National Research Council (NRC) to conduct a study that would identify approaches for achieving breakthroughs in research and technology for commercial supersonic aircraft. Commercial Supersonic Technology documents the results of that effort. This report describes technical areas where ongoing work should be continued and new focused research initiated to enable operational deployment of an environmentally acceptable, economically viable commercial aircraft capable of sustained supersonic flight, including flight over land, at speeds up to approximately Mach 2 in the next 25 years or less.

Book An Experimental Study of the Velocity Field of a Transverse Jet Injected Into a Supersonic Crossflow

Download or read book An Experimental Study of the Velocity Field of a Transverse Jet Injected Into a Supersonic Crossflow written by Juan Gabriel Santiago and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of a supersonic combustor which uses transverse jet injection into a supersonic flow (TJISF) as a means of fuel injection and mixing requires a fundamental understanding of these flows. Such knowledge may also serve studies of the thrust vector control of rocket nozzles, the cooling of nozzle walls, and jet reaction force prediction. The present investigation is a quantitative, experimental study of a single, sonic, underexpanded, transverse jet injected into a Mach 1.6 crossflow. The motivation for this research program is to improve the fundamental understanding of the fluid dynamic mechanisms and mixing processes in this flow. Schlieren/shadowgraph photography, surface flow visualization, and two-component, frequency pre-shifted laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) data have been obtained. Four LDV optical arrangements have been used to measure all three mean velocity components, five of the six kinematic Reynolds stresses, and the turbulent kinetic energy. The LDV system is equipped with a computer-controlled traverse system and has been used to provide velocity measurements at over 4,000 locations throughout the TJISF flowfield. The study focuses on the transverse, midline plane and two crossflow planes. The majority of the measurements in these planes has been made in the high gradient regions of the jet plume. Measurements of the mean and turbulent velocity fields helped resolve important issues in the study of the TJISF flowfield. These issues include the size and orientation of the recirculation regions upstream and downstream of the jet (including the horseshoe vortex just upstream of the jet); the structure and strength of the bow shock, barrel shock, and Mach disk; the structure, strength, and development of the kidney-shaped, counter-rotating vortex pair; the growth of the annular shear layer between the jet plume and the crossflow; the growth of the boundary layer beneath the jet plume; the Reynolds stress fields of the flow; the production of turbulent kinetic energy; and the degree of anisotropy of the turbulent stresses in this flow. In addition, the present study provides validation data for analytical and numerical predictions of the TJISF flowfield.
