Book Investigations of the Quasi static and Dynamic Response of Granular Soils

Download or read book Investigations of the Quasi static and Dynamic Response of Granular Soils written by Ibrahim A. Ebeido and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes experimental studies of shock-induced sustained-amplitude stress waves in soil. A general analysis is made of wave propagation in a cylindrical bar. The mathematical model includes stress relaxation and radial inertia factors. Also included is analytical interpretation of unloading wave propagation. Unloading waves were generated experimentally by suddenly unloading a previously loaded cylindrical specimen. The analysis results in a theory which accounts for longitudinal, axial, and radial shear modes. Preliminary results are presented of experiments involving earth shock with spherical symmetry. Quasi-static isotropic compression tests and their associated problems are discussed. (Author).

Book A Model Study of Dynamically Loaded Square Footings on Dry Sand

Download or read book A Model Study of Dynamically Loaded Square Footings on Dry Sand written by Jack K. Poplin and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation reported herein was undertaken to develop an approach to modeling displacements of surface and shallow-buried footings on dry sand subject to high-intensity, single-pulse loads. A hypothetical shallow-bured structure with an isolated footing loaded by airblast overpressure produced by detonation of a nuclear weapon was assumed for design of load pulses on nine model footings used: footing widths of 4.5, 6.0, and 7.5 in. and depth-of-burial to footing width ratios of 0, 0.5, and 1.0. The principles of similitude were used to scale length, force, and time in the models. The models were placed in mobile test bins of uniform, fine, dry sand (90 percent relative density) and subjected to dynamic and static loading. Nondimensional load-displacement relations dependent only on depth-of-burial ratio were developed relating maximum displacement to peak dynamic load, footing width, and soil shear strength gradient. When the dynamic response of the footings in the form of reaction-displacement curves was compared with static response, an increase in initial stiffness and ultimate strength was observed for dynamic loading. However, these dynamic increases were greatest when the static shear strength was lowest, i.e. footings on the surface, and were least for footings buried at a depth equal to its width where the static overburden produced a substantial increase in shear strength. Book Coastal Geohazard and Offshore Geotechnics

Download or read book Coastal Geohazard and Offshore Geotechnics written by Dong-Sheng Jeng and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With rapid developments being made in the exploration of marine resources, coastal geohazard and offshore geotechnics have attracted a great deal of attention from coastal geotechnical engineers, with significant progress being made in recent years. Due to the complicated nature of marine environmnets, there are numerous natural marine geohazard preset throughout the world’s marine areas, e.g., the South China Sea. In addition, damage to offshore infrastructure (e.g., monopiles, bridge piers, etc.) and their supporting installations (pipelines, power transmission cables, etc.) has occurred in the last decades. A better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms and soil behavior of the seabed in marine environments will help engineers in the design and planning processes of coastal geotechnical engineering projects. The purpose of this book is to present the recent advances made in the field of coastal geohazards and offshore geotechnics. The book will provide researchers with information reagrding the recent developments in the field, and possible future developments. The book is composed of eighteen papers, covering three main themes: (1) the mechanisms of fluid–seabed interactions and the instability associated with seabeds when they are under dynamic loading (papers 1–5); (2) evaluation of the stability of marine infrastructure, including pipelines (papers 6–8), piled foundation and bridge piers (papers 9–12), submarine tunnels (paper 13), and other supported foundations (paper 14); and (3) coastal geohazards, including submarine landslides and slope stability (papers 15–16) and other geohazard issues (papers 17–18). The editors hope that this book will functoin as a guide for researchers, scientists, and scholars, as well as practitioners of coastal and offshore engineering.

Book Effect of Suction on Dynamic Properties of Unsaturated Soils at Small to Mid shear Strain Amplitudes

Download or read book Effect of Suction on Dynamic Properties of Unsaturated Soils at Small to Mid shear Strain Amplitudes written by Alejandro Hernan Pino Bravo and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the results from an experimental study that has been designed to assess the effect of the suction and net mean stress on the dynamic properties of poorly graded sand with silt subjected to small- to mid-shear strains. The practical implication of this study includes determining the effect on soil stiffness properties of increased matric suction (transpiration of water) at different net mean stresses (or depths) in the field. The engineering analysis of earth structures subjected to static and non-static loading under unsaturated conditions requires knowing the relevant parameters of the soil, such as shear wave velocity, shear modulus, and material damping. The traditional soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering have generally focused on soil extreme conditions, that is, completely dry or saturated state of soil; thus, these branches of soil mechanics present shortcomings to estimate the true soil strength and stiffness, and its behavior at small- to mid-shear strains, under partially saturated conditions. In the last years, additional efforts have been made to gain a better understanding of partially saturated soil behavior by using field and laboratory based measurements of soil suction. However, these efforts have not thoroughly covered the dynamic response of partially saturated soils at small- to mid-shear strain amplitudes. This work intends to study the dynamic response of unsaturated soils, particularly and the effect of varying matric suction and net mean stress on shear modulus, material damping and threshold strain.

Book Rock Dynamics and Applications 3

Download or read book Rock Dynamics and Applications 3 written by Charlie C. Li and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rock Dynamics – Experiments, Theories and Applications is a collection of scientific and technical papers presented at the Third International Conference on Rock Dynamics and Applications (RocDyn-3, Trondheim, Norway, 26-27 June 2018). The papers in the book reflect the recent developments in experiment and theory as well as engineering applications of rock dynamics. Rock dynamics studies the response of rock and rock masses under dynamic loading and during the state transition from static loading to kinetic movement. It also includes the study of engineering countermeasures to dynamic instability of rock and rock masses. The topics in the book include: - Dynamic theories - Numerical simulation - Propagation of stress waves - Dynamic tests of rock - Stability of underground openings under dynamic loading - Rockburst - Seismic monitoring - Dynamic rock support - Blasting - Earthquake-related rock structure damage, etc. Applications, such as rockburst, dynamic rock support, seismic monitoring, blasting and earthquake-related rock structure damage, are paid special attention in Rock Dynamics – Experiments, Theories and Applications. The papers, from specialists both from mining and tunnelling branches, discuss commonly interested dynamic issues. Their experience and knowledge in the application of rock dynamics are extremely valuable for all academics, engineers and professionals who work with rock dynamics.
