Book An Experimental Study of Silent Thinking Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental Study of Silent Thinking In order to understand thinking from a point of view other than logical, it is necessary that thought processes be submitted to experimentation and be carefully observed in respect to their inherent characteristics. The results described below have been based upon an experimental study of thinking in relation to its physiological and psychological aspects. Not only has thinking in this investigation been submitted to observation under controlled conditions, but objective measures have also been made of its various characteristics, so that as little dependence as possible has been placed upon the subjective estimates of those thought processes which were being studied. The term "silent thinking" has been used throughout this report to describe the processes carried on by the mind in its attempt to reach new conclusions, which are controlled in their development by the demands of a problematic situation. Subjects have been asked to solve problems without consciously making use of any explicit form of behavior. The value of the solution was not taken into account. Any solution offered by the subject, which to him was new, was accepted. It is such processes as these that have been submitted to experimentation in this investigation and that have been studied from the psychological and physiological view points. There have been few attempts to deliberately observe under controlled conditions the silent reaching of new conclusions. Ach, in his study of thought, was interested to discover whether extra-conscious determining tendencies, set up by a given task, could yield new products which would not be the result of reproduction. Book excerpt: Similar results were simultaneously obtained in this coun try from the experimental work carried on by Woodworth.1 His subjects were asked questions which were considered difficult enough to stimulate real thinking. Ordinarily the subjects were asked to give their retrospections at the com pletion of their solutions, but frequently the experimenter interrupted them before they had reached their conclusions, asking: Any visual pictures? Any words heard? Any feelings of bodily movement? From the study of these results and from his own introspections, Woodworth con cluded that thinking contains elements wholly irreducible to sensory terms. Frequently the content of thinking was merely a particular feeling of the thought in question, a state of mind apparently identical with Buhler's Gedanke. In describing one of his own thought processes, Woodworth was even able to add: When thought is really effective, when some new insight is gained, the words are absent, though they soon come tagging after.

Book The Train of Thought

Download or read book The Train of Thought written by Clara Harrison Town and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Train of Thought: An Experimental Study of the Insane In observing and studying experimentally the patients at Friends' Asylum for the Insane, Frankford, one test has proved especially fruitful of results. The test is that used by Prof. Lightner Witmer for the study of association. The subject is required to write a list of words, one below the other, during a period of fifteen minutes. He is directed to write without pause or choice each word as it occurs to him. The experimenter records the number of words written during the first two minutes, and during the first, second and third periods of five minutes each. This fifteen minute test furnishes material for the study of (1) the forms of association, (2) the quality of the ideas expressed (perceptual or conceptual), (3) the thought content, (4) the rapidity of thought, (5) the effect of practice and fatigue, (6) the degree of concentration of thought, and (7) the degree of the power of application. The trend of thought is not controlled in any way by the experimenter, and the subject writing freely for a period of fifteen minutes, rarely fails to include many words indicative of his individual interests and pursuits. In an insane subject this tendency is of especial value as delusions are often expressed which would not be betrayed in conversation or in a shorter written test. From an examination of such a list, therefore, the investigator is usually able to determine the general trend of the writers thought, i.e. to determine whether he is literary or scientific in his tastes, or whether he is principally occupied with the daily routine of events either in the narrow field of personal experience, or in the larger sphere of the worlds activities. Book Experimental and Quasi Experimental Designs for Research

Download or read book Experimental and Quasi Experimental Designs for Research written by Donald T. Campbell and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We shall examine the validity of 16 experimental designs against 12 common threats to valid inference. By experiment we refer to that portion of research in which variables are manipulated and their effects upon other variables observed. It is well to distinguish the particular role of this chapter. It is not a chapter on experimental design in the Fisher (1925, 1935) tradition, in which an experimenter having complete mastery can schedule treatments and measurements for optimal statistical efficiency, with complexity of design emerging only from that goal of efficiency. Insofar as the designs discussed in the present chapter become complex, it is because of the intransigency of the environment: because, that is, of the experimenter’s lack of complete control.

This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trial-and-Error, Gradual Analysis, and Sudden Reorganization: An Experimental Study of Problem Solving; Archives of Psychology A, B, C, D and E respectively (see the diagrams) all but B were based at least partly on the diagonal principle, i.e., the apparently straight edges were to be used on the diagonal, and vice versa. All except E were based also on the circular principle, that is, the pieces were to be used pin-wheel fashion. Since they were so presented as to avoid suggesting these principles of construction, and in the case of the diagonal principle to suggest the opposite, these factors con tributed to the necessity for finding a roundabout path to Solution. The pieces were cut to specification out of bristol board and lacquered black on both sides. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
