Book Experimental Investigation of a Spanwise Forced Mixing Layer

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of a Spanwise Forced Mixing Layer written by A. Glezer and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The occurrence of three-dimensional motion within a plane mixing layer results in a significant increase of the internal mixedness (mixing transition). The three-dimensional motion necessary for mixing is induced by streamwise, counter-rotating vortex pairs superimposed on the primary spanwise vortices. While their appearance in the plane mixing layer has been established, their origin and their evolution with increasing streamwise distance remains and enigma. Stability considerations indicate that an instability in the spanwise direction may lead to the generation of streamwise vorticity. This suggests that the flow may be susceptible to low level spanwise periodic forcing. Previous experiments have demonstrated that forcing allows the enhancement of individual instability modes and is an essential step towards understanding the evolution of the natural flow. Furthermore, application of forcing to the flow provides a powerful tool of considerable practical significance for the control of the downstream evolution. We have begun an experimental investigation of a plane mixing layer which is forced independently in the spanwise and streamwise directions. Our objective is to study the evolution of spanwise instability. Its role in the development of the plane mixing layer and possible interaction between the streamwise and spanwise instabilities. Forcing is applied by a spanwise line of discrete surface film heaters flush mounted on the flow partition. This technique enables us to study nonlinear interactions between various modes of spanwise and streamwise instabilities. Keywords: Mixing layer, Spanwise forcing, Coherent structures, Hotwires, Schilieren.

Book Eddy Structure Identification in Free Turbulent Shear Flows

Download or read book Eddy Structure Identification in Free Turbulent Shear Flows written by J.P. Bonnet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence and crucial role played by large-scale, organized motions in turbulent flows are now recognized by industrial, applied and fundamental researchers alike. It has become increasingly evident that coherent structures influence mixing, noise, vibration, heat transfer, drag, etc... The accelera tion of the development of both experimental and computational programs devoted to this topic has been evident at several recent international meet ings. One of the first questions which experimentalists or numerical analysts are faced with is: how can these structures be separated from the background turbulence? This is a nontrivial task because the coherent structures are gen erally embedded in a random field and the technique used to determine when and where certain structures are passing, or their averaged characteristics (in the more probable or dominant role sense) is directly related to the definition of the coherent structure. Several methods or approaches are available and the choice of a particular one is generally dependent on the desired informa tion. This choice depends not only on the definition of the structure, but also on the experimental and numerical capabilities available to the researcher.

Book excerpt: This text presents the key findings of the International Symposium held in Delft in 2003, which explored the process of shallow flows. Shallow flows are found in lowland rivers, lakes, estuaries, bays, coastal areas and in density-stratified atmospheres, and may be observed in puddles, as in oceans. They impact on the life and work of a w

Book Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments 4

Download or read book Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments 4 written by D. Laurence and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-04-14 with total page 975 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain the papers presented at the 4th International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements held at Ajaccio, Corsica, France from 24-26 May 1999. It follows three previous conferences on the topic of engineering turbulence modelling and measurements. The purpose of this series of symposia is to provide a forum for presenting and discussing new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. Turbulence is still one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. As powerful computers and accurate numerical methods are now available for solving the flow equations, and since engineering applications nearly always involve turbulence effects, the reliability of CFD analysis depends more and more on the performance of the turbulence models. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulent momentum, heat and mass transfer. For the understanding of turbulence phenomena, experiments are indispensable, but they are equally important for providing data for the development and testing of turbulence models and hence for CFD software validation.
