Book An Experimental Study of a Method to Attenuate Surface Waves Using Artificially Generated Surface Currents

Download or read book An Experimental Study of a Method to Attenuate Surface Waves Using Artificially Generated Surface Currents written by Richard I. Hires and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies showed the effectiveness of laterally-sheared wakes of towed rigid grids in achieving substantial attenuation of following regular wave trains by refraction. Significant attenuation could be obtained in wakes with widths comparable to the incident wave length, with depths of the order of 10% of the incident wave length and with grid tow speeds about 10% of the incident wave celerity. In the present study, model-scale experiments were conducted to extend the earlier results to the cases of random waves and of oblique waves, to determine attenuation for two possible operational scenarios for the prototype application of this method, and to test the effectiveness of a towed net to replace the towed rigid grid for full-scale use. Test results for random following seas were consistent with earlier tests with regular following waves. For oblique seas, the region of attenuation in the wake of the grid was shifted laterally towards the downwave side of the wake. In addition, peak attenuation was less than that expected from a simple extrapolation of the semi-empirical prediction formula developed for following seas to the case of oblique waves. Model tests with a towed flexible net held open with attached paravanes revealed that similar levels of attenuation could be obtained with this apparatus as that achieved with the towed rigid grids. Field tests of this wave attenuation method was conducted at intermediate scale in New York Harbor and at full-scale in the ocean off Miami.

Book An Experimental Study of a Method to Attenuate Surface Waves Over a Limited Region of the Open Ocean

Download or read book An Experimental Study of a Method to Attenuate Surface Waves Over a Limited Region of the Open Ocean written by Richard I. Hires and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the refraction of surface gravity waves by relatively narrow (of the order of or less than one wave length) and shallow, laterally sheared, surface currents was undertaken to determine the feasibility of employing artificially-generated currents to achieve local wave damping in the ocean. In the experiments, single frequency wave trains (wave length, wave length sub 0, in still water) were initially propagated in the same direction as the direction of the current in the wake of a towed grid (with lateral extent, W sub g, and draft, d sub g). The required power for wave lengths up to 300 feet was within the range of installed power of conventional off-shore boats.

Book Surface Wave Methods for Near Surface Site Characterization

Download or read book Surface Wave Methods for Near Surface Site Characterization written by Sebastiano Foti and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Develop a Greater Understanding of How and Why Surface Wave Testing Works Using examples and case studies directly drawn from the authors’ experience, Surface Wave Methods for Near-Surface Site Characterization addresses both the experimental and theoretical aspects of surface wave propagation in both forward and inverse modeling. This book accents the key facets associated with surface wave testing for near-surface site characterization. It clearly outlines the basic principles, the theoretical framework and the practical implementation of surface wave analysis. In addition, it also describes in detail the equipment and measuring devices, acquisition techniques, signal processing, forward and inverse modeling theories, and testing protocols that form the basis of modern surface wave techniques. Review Examples of Typical Applications for This Geophysical Technique Divided into eight chapters, the book explains surface wave testing principles from data measurement to interpretation. It effectively integrates several examples and case studies illustrating how different ground conditions and geological settings may influence the interpretation of data measurements. The authors accurately describe each phase of testing in addition to the guidelines for correctly performing and interpreting results. They present variants of the test within a consistent framework to facilitate comparisons, and include an in-depth discussion of the uncertainties arising at each stage of surface wave testing. Provides a comprehensive and in-depth treatment of all the steps involved in surface wave testing Discusses surface wave methods and their applications in various geotechnical conditions and geological settings Explains how surface wave measurements can be used to estimate both stiffness and dissipative properties of the ground Addresses the issue of uncertainty, which is often an overlooked problem in surface wave testing Includes examples with comparative analysis using different processing techniques and inversion algorithms Outlines advanced applications of surface wave testing such as joint inversion, underwater investigation, and Love wave analysis Written for geotechnical engineers, engineering seismologists, geophysicists, and researchers, Surface Wave Methods for Near-Surface Site Characterization offers practical guidance, and presents a thorough understanding of the basic concepts.

Book Waves in Oceanic and Coastal Waters

Download or read book Waves in Oceanic and Coastal Waters written by Leo H. Holthuijsen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waves in Oceanic and Coastal Waters describes the observation, analysis and prediction of wind-generated waves in the open ocean, in shelf seas, and in coastal regions with islands, channels, tidal flats and inlets, estuaries, fjords and lagoons. Most of this richly illustrated book is devoted to the physical aspects of waves. After introducing observation techniques for waves, both at sea and from space, the book defines the parameters that characterise waves. Using basic statistical and physical concepts, the author discusses the prediction of waves in oceanic and coastal waters, first in terms of generalised observations, and then in terms of the more theoretical framework of the spectral energy balance. He gives the results of established theories and also the direction in which research is developing. The book ends with a description of SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore), the preferred computer model of the engineering community for predicting waves in coastal waters.

Book A Laboratory Experiment on Surface Wave Attenuation Due to Underwater Turbulence

Download or read book A Laboratory Experiment on Surface Wave Attenuation Due to Underwater Turbulence written by James Edward Paquin and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attenuation of surface waves caused by underwater turbulence was investigated in a wave-tank experiment. The waves studied (frequencies ranging from 1.2 to 12.3 Hertz) were strongly attenuated by a zone of grid-generated turbulence. This attenuation depended on the length of the turbulent region, and on the frequency of the incident wave. The equation governing attenuation was: h = h sub 0 exp( -ax) where h is wave height, h sub 0 is undisturbed wave height, x is the length of the turbulent region, and a is an attenuation coefficient proportional to the cube root of frequency. It was also noted that the waves were shifted in phase as they passed through the turbulence, and that the magnitude of this shift increased with frequency. The quantitative results of the experiment were obtained from measurements of nearly sinusoidal waves. They were confirmed, qualitatively, for a continuous spectrum of waves by measurement of wind-generated model sea surface. (Author).
