Book An Experimental Investigation of the Supersonic Combustion of Vitiated Air hydrogen Mixtures

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of the Supersonic Combustion of Vitiated Air hydrogen Mixtures written by R. E. Davis and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted utilizing an arc heater as a high enthalpy air source to determine the effects of water vapor contamination on a hydrogen-air supersonic combustion process. A flow apparatus was constructed to permit vitiated, arc-heated airflow to mix coaxially with hydrogen in a constant area duct. The hydrogen was injected at the exit of the vitiated air nozzle which was designed for M = 2.8. Data were obtained in the form of wall pressure distributions and impact pressures and gas samples obtained from nonquenching pitot probes. The enthalpy of the mixture was varied from 1360 to 1860 Btu/1bm and the water vapor mass percent in the vitiated air was varied from 0 to 23. (Author).

Book Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Supersonic Combustion

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Supersonic Combustion written by Antonio Ferri and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical and experimental investigation of mixing and supersonic combustion is presented. A review of the problem under investigation is given. Then an analysis of inviscid flow fields with a finite rate chemistry for a hydrogen-air reaction is presented, an an analysis of a turbulent mixing for flows with large density gradients with no chemical reaction is presented. The analysis is compared wit the experimental results. Results of the experiments in upersonic combustion are presented. (Author).

Book Hydrogen Fueled Scramjet Investigation

Download or read book Hydrogen Fueled Scramjet Investigation written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents an experimental and analytical study of the supersonic mixing and combustion processes associated with a free-shear layer. A specific objective comprised quantifying the effects on the mixing and combustion processes of pressure gradients associated with the production of shock waves in the flowfield. An experiment was conducted in a generic supersonic combustion configuration that incorporated the essential characteristics of scramjet combustors currently being considered for flight application. The objective of the analytical effort was to evaluate mixing and combustion models in state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes. The experiments provided accurate data used to formulate code input conditions and to evaluate codes that were formulated for application in current high-speed propulsion design activities. Species concentration, total and static temperature, and pitot pressure profiles were measured in a shear layer experiment in which gaseous hydrogen was injected tangentially into a Mach 3 (nominal) vitiated air stream. In this experiment, hydrogen was injected adjacent to the upperwall of the test section. A nonintrusive optical diagnostic technique was used in conjunction with intrusive probing to define the flowfield initial conditions and to characterize the detailed features of the flowfield subsequent to hydrogen injection and combustion.

Book Sustained Supersonic Combustion in the Laboratory Under Low Density Conditions

Download or read book Sustained Supersonic Combustion in the Laboratory Under Low Density Conditions written by Robert G. Dunn and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of supersonic combustion simulating conditions anticipated in propulsive systems for high altitude, high Mach number flight is described. A unique test facility in operation at the Aerospace Research Laboratories has the capability of simulating supersonic combustion conditions for flight Mach numbers near 12. The facility is considered unique because of its capability of providing conditions under which supersonic combustion can occur at low desities (1-4 psia) with diffusive mixing and with combustion resulting from auto-ignition. Experiments have been conducted with injector/combustor configurations to evaluate the ignition mechanism for axisymmetric streams of hydrogen and air and to evolve a combustion chamber design suitable for experimental study of sustained supersonic combustion. In a parallel theoretical phase, a numberical analysis of the combustion chamber flow field has been made by high speed computer; a parametric study of supersonic combustion in the diffusive hydrogen-air flow field over an air-jet Mach number range of 1.5 to 2.5 and a static pressure range of 1 to 3 psia was accomplished. Experimental data to-date have conclusively established the occurrence of sustained supersonic combustion in the diffusive hydrogen-air flow field at combustor entrance static pressures near 2.5 psia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 24th International Symposium on Shock Waves (ISSW24) was held at the Beijing Friendship Hotel during July 11-16, 2004, in Beijing. It was a great pleasure for the Local Organizing Committee to organize the ISSW in China for the first time, because forty-seven years have passed since the First Shock Tube Symposium was held in 1957 at Albuquerque. The ISSW24 had to be postponed for one year because of the SARS outbreak in Beijing shortly before the Symposium was scheduled to be held in 2003, but it has achieved success due to the continuous support and kind understanding from all the delegates. It is very heart-warming to have had such an experience and I am very happy to have served as chairman for the Symposium. I would like to thank all for the contributions and help that they have given us over the past three years, without which we would not have had the Symposium. A total of 460 abstracts were submitted to the ISSW24. Each of the abstracts was evaluated by three members of the Scientific Review Committee and the decision on acceptance wasmade based on the reviewers' reports. 195oral papers, including 9plenary lectures, wereaccepted to be presented in three parallel sessions, and 135poster papers in three dedicated poster sessions. Topics discussed in these papers cover all aspects ofshock wave research.
