Book Improving Human Performance in Dynamic Tasks

Download or read book Improving Human Performance in Dynamic Tasks written by Hassan Qudrat-Ullah and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about improving human decision making and performance in complex, dynamic tasks. The defining characteristics of a dynamic decision task are that there are a number of decisions required, that decisions are interdependent and that the environment in which the decision is made is transient and feedback is pervasive. Examples of dynamic tasks include the sustainable management of renewable resources and how businesses might allocate resources for research and development (R&D) projects. Decision making in dynamic tasks can be improved through training with system dynamics–based interactive learning environments (ILE’s) that include systematic debriefing. Some key features of the book include its didactic approach, numerous tables, figures, and the multidimensional evaluative model. Researchers can use the developed “evaluation model” to gauge various decision-aiding technologies. How to Improve Human Performance in Dynamic Tasks appeals to those interested in the design and evaluation of simulation-based decision support systems, as well as policy makers, students, researchers, and industrialists concerned by the issue of improving human performance in organizational tasks.

Book Design of Incentive Systems

Download or read book Design of Incentive Systems written by Dennis D. Fehrenbacher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monetary incentives, as a driving force for human behavior, are the main theme of this book. The primary goals underlying the application of monetary incentive systems in companies are motivating employees to strive for superior productivity in line with the interests of employers, and hiring adequately skilled employees. The first goal refers to incentive effects, the latter to sorting effects. This book introduces important theories and concepts concerning behavior under influence of monetary incentives; it reviews existing economic frameworks and identifies specific contingency variables. Based on an integrative framework of elements influencing incentive and sorting effects, a laboratory experiment is presented including detailed methodological discussion on experimentation and data analysis as well as an extensive presentation of findings and discussion of implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this handbook on a growing public menace, Clifford R. Bragdon applies acoustical engineering and social science to the least understood—yet one of the most serious—environmental hazards of modern society. This book is a precision tool; it gives facts and figures, precise scientific measurements, and accurate data on what noise is, what it does, and how to combat it. The author pinpoints the noise levels—many of them illegal—of automobiles, buses, subways, airplanes, household appliances, and children's toys in numerous charts and tables and relates these data to the measurable social, physical, and psychological damage they do to human beings. He catalogues the "noise-free" claims of manufacturers of these products in an Appendix that speaks for itself. A thorough case study of an area near Philadelphia International Airport and other townships, including five hundred households, the author evaluates existing noise abatement programs on local, state, and federal levels, and finds most of them seriously inadequate. As steps toward the solution to the noise crisis, he proposes a system for rating environmental health, new approaches to community noise management, and a variety of architectural suggestions. The bibliography—probably the most complete and up-to-date source collection on the subject ever assembled—is an invaluable reference work in itself. It lists over five hundred sources, arranged in six major categories: Noise, General; Physical Effects; Psycho-Social Effects; Law; Noise Abatement; and Noise Sources. Noise Pollution is indispensable not only for the concerned citizen but for all those who can, and must, take immediate and effective action in our unquiet crisis: urban planners, architects, hospital administrators, public health officials, transportation executives, lawyers, realtors, sound engineers, manufacturers of transportation equipment and household appliances, and community leaders. It is a vital resource in dealing with the noise crisis that is destroying pleasure, lowering work performance, eroding health, causing physical injury, and even challenging basic human survival.

Book An Experimental Investigation and System Design for Humidity and Carbon Dioxide Level Control Using Thermal Radiation

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation and System Design for Humidity and Carbon Dioxide Level Control Using Thermal Radiation written by John S. Maulbetsch and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was carried out to verify the feasibility of controlling carbon dioxide levels in space cabin atmospheres by freeze-out techniques using thermal radiation as the only mode of heat rejection. A one-tenth scale system was constructed with the primary aim of gaining understanding of the CO2 precipitation mechanism and determining the operating characteristics of a precipitator plate. Both quantitative measurements and visual observation of the frost formation were made. The geometric characteristics of the precipitator channel were found to be not critical. Uniform frost layer formation could be obtained and premature channel plugging was not a problem. Typical precipitator plate effectivenesses of 0.75 - 0.85 were easily obtainable. Simultaneous CO2 sublimation was achievable at a controllable rate. System stability was easily achieved. Solid CO2 carryover in both the precipitating and sublimating streams is a real possibility and preventive measures must be taken in the final design of the system. Based on these results, a complete test system was designed to handle the water vapor and carbon dioxide loads in a one-man, manned space enclosure. The system, with a total weight of 51.2 lb, is a two-loop configuration where one loop maintains humidity control and the other removes the generated carbon dioxide and returns all of the accompanying water vapor to the cabin. The system will operate indefinitely with no operator intervention, is operable in zero-gravity, and is of low weight, volume, and power. (Author).
