Book Resolution Of The Twentieth Century Conundrum In Elastic Stability

Download or read book Resolution Of The Twentieth Century Conundrum In Elastic Stability written by Isaac E Elishakoff and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been stability theories developed for beams, plates and shells — the most significant elements in mechanical, aerospace, ocean and marine engineering. For beams and plates, the theoretical and experimental values of buckling loads are in close vicinity. However for thin shells, the experimental predictions do not conform with the theory, due to presence of small geometric imperfections that are deviations from the ideal shape. This fact has been referred to in the literature as ‘embarrassing’, ‘paradoxical’ and ‘perplexing’. Indeed, the popular adage, “In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is”, very much applies to thin shells whose experimental buckling loads may constitute a small fraction of the theoretical prediction based on classical linear theory; because in practice, engineers use knockdown factors that are not theoretically substantiated. This book presents a uniform approach that tames this prima-donna-like and capricious behavior of structures that has been dubbed the ‘imperfection sensitivity’ — thus resolving the conundrum that has occupied the best minds of elastic stability throughout the twentieth century.

Book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells written by N. Yamaki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1984-02-01 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book Experimental Study of the Creep Buckling of Circular Cylindrical Shells Under an Axially Applied Compression

Download or read book Experimental Study of the Creep Buckling of Circular Cylindrical Shells Under an Axially Applied Compression written by Stanford University. Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of electroforming to produce circular cylindrical shells is described. Examples are cited for which the use of electroforming provides opportunities for the development of unique specimen designs and test procedures. The use of a tapered creep specimen to generate isochronous stress-strain curves is described. The procedure developed provides a method for deriving basic creep relationships form data obtained from a small number of tests. The results of creep buckling tests on circular cylindrical shells under axial compression are presented. The basic features described are the end-shortening history, the variation of buckling load with time, and the post-buckling pattern which is developed. (Author).

Book Experimental Investigation of the Buckling of Clamped Oval Cylindrical Shells Under Axial Compression

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Buckling of Clamped Oval Cylindrical Shells Under Axial Compression written by George Feinstein and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastic buckling under axial compression of finite, oval cylindrical shells with clamped boundaries was investigated experimentally. The determination of the buckling strength was made on a series of oval shells made of Mylar A. The test results indicated that the discrepancy between theoretical and experimental initial buckling loads for the ovals is similar to that of the circular cylindrical shells. However, in contrast to the circular case, a collapse load significantly exceeding the initial buckling load is observed in the case of ovals with moderate-to-large eccentricity. (Author).

Book Experimental Study of the Creep Buckling of Moderately Thin walled Circular Cylindrical Shells Subjected to Axial Compression

Download or read book Experimental Study of the Creep Buckling of Moderately Thin walled Circular Cylindrical Shells Subjected to Axial Compression written by Michel Benoit and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Test equipment suitable for the study of the creep buckling of axially compressed circular cylindrical shells was developed and built. With the aid of this equipment, thirty-one electroformed nickel cylinders of radius-to-thickness ratios ranging from 30.6 to 96.4 were tested at a temperature of 650F. The loading of each specimen was interrupted usually once, and in some cases twice, to permit an exact measurement of the creep deformations produced by the axial compression. Diagrams showing the deformed shapes of eight generators of each specimen are presented at two or three stages of the creep buckling process. Inspection of the figures reveals that specimens of this kind either buckle axisymmetrically, or begin the creep buckling process in a axisymmetric manner but change over to a multilobed pattern in later stages of the deformations. Book Snap through and Postbuckling Equilibrium Behavior of Circular Cylindrical Shells Under Axial Load

Download or read book Snap through and Postbuckling Equilibrium Behavior of Circular Cylindrical Shells Under Axial Load written by Stanford University. Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis was begun with an investigation of the effect that a more accurate displacement assumption, in conjunction with the exact strain-displacement relations, has on the postbuckling equilibrium behavior. It was hoped that the limiting behavior of wall thickness and wave number parameter would be altered, and that the stress coefficient would not tend to zero. Particular attention was given to an exact representation of membrane strains because it was known that in the limit as the radius-to-thickness ratio of the shell approaches infinity, the displacements approach the inextensional polyhedral surface. While all the strains in the middle surface of this limiting polyhedral shell are zero, the Donnell strain-displacement relations yield strains amounting to 0.1% if the number of waves around the circumference is 10. The results obtained did not differ significantly from the Donnell strain-displacement relations. (Author).
