Book Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Three dimensional Laminar Wall Jet of Newtonian and Non Newtonian Fluids

This book was released on 2010 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research program was designed to investigate the characteristics of three-dimensional laminar wall jet flow of both Newtonian and two shear-thinning non-Newtonian fluids. The non-Newtonian fluids were prepared from xanthan gum solutions of various concentrations. Both experimental and numerical methodologies were employed in this study. The wall jet was created using a circular pipe of diameter 7 mm and flows into an open fluid tank. The initial Reynolds numbers based on the pipe diameter and jet exit velocity ranged from 250 to 800. The velocity measurements were conducted using a particle image velocimetry technique. The measurements were conducted at several streamwise locations to cover both the developing and self-similar regions. For the numerical study, the complete nonlinear Navier-Stokes equation was solved using an in-house colocated finite volume based CFD code. A Carreau model was employed for the non-Newtonian fluids. The viscosity in the governing equations was obtained explicitly. From the PIV measurements and CFD results, velocity profiles and jet half-widths were extracted at selected downstream locations to study the effects of Reynolds number and specific fluid type on the jet characteristics. It was observed that the numerical results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data. The decay of maximum velocity, jet spread rates, skin friction coefficient, streamwise velocity profiles, and secondary flows depend strongly on the initial Reynolds number irrespective of the fluid. The results also show that the jet spreads more in the spanwise direction than in the transverse direction in the early flow development whereas the reverse is true in the downstream region. Important differences were observed when the results for the non-Newtonian fluids were compared with those for Newtonian fluid.

Book A Numerical Investigation of Three Dimensional Impinging Jets

Download or read book A Numerical Investigation of Three Dimensional Impinging Jets written by Magdi H. Rizk and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress is reported on the direct numerical simulation complex VTOL flows using the full three-dimensional, time-dependent Navier-Strokes equations. The objective of this numerical simulation is to compute accurately the details of the flow, including the role of initial turbulence in the jet, the influence of forward motion on hover aerodynamics, the collision zone and fountain characteristics, and the jet structure and entrainment process in the transitional flight regime. The unsteady behavior of the jet flow due to forcing at a specific frequency has been investigated. Preliminary results on unsteady single-frequency forcing are presented and a discussion of work in the turbulence aspect of the problem is included. Keywords: Upwash fountain.

Book An Experimental Investigation of Three dimensional Free Mixing of Incompressible Turbulent Free Jets

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Three dimensional Free Mixing of Incompressible Turbulent Free Jets written by Nicholas Trentacoste and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the bulk properties of turbulent, three-dimensional, incompressible, air jets issuing into a quiescent air ambient is presented. The jet orifices utilized included rectangular, elliptical, axisymmetric and triangular geometries. Experimental results of pertinent mean flow properties such as axis velocity decay, half-width growth, etc., are reported. The flow fields of such jets are found to be characterized by three distinct regions in the axis velocity decay. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that low-speed jets which originate from non-axisymmetric orifices decay to axisymmetry far downstream of the jet exit. (Author).

Book An Experimental Investigation of a Turbulent Incompressible Three dimensional Wall Jet

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of a Turbulent Incompressible Three dimensional Wall Jet written by Hermann Viets and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an experimental investigation of the bulk properties of a turbulent, three-dimensional, incompressible air wall jet issuing into a quiescent air ambient from a rectangular orifice parallel to and at the surface of a flat plate. Results of this study indicate the characteristic features of such a dissipative flow. The behavior of a three-dimensional flow field of this nature has associated with it three distinct regions in the axis velocity decay with an approach to the flow field of a radial wall jet far downstream of the jet exit and on the centerline of the flow. Spreading rates in the various cross planes display a dependence upon the aforementioned characteristic regions. (Author).

Book Theoretical and Experimental Investigations of Jet Parallel to Wing in Cross Flow Part I Numerical Integration of Three Dimensional Flow Part II Experimental Laser Velocimeter Flow Field Investigations

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Investigations of Jet Parallel to Wing in Cross Flow Part I Numerical Integration of Three Dimensional Flow Part II Experimental Laser Velocimeter Flow Field Investigations written by R. M. Scruggs and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and experimental analysis of jet flow parallel to a wing and in cross flow is presented. A numerical model is developed to integrate the three-dimensional flow field equations. A parabolic approximation is assumed and marginally stable solutions are obtained. It is concluded that stability problems arise because of a combination of an incomplete theoretical model and an inadequate numerical integration scheme. Turbulence parameters are obtained from laser velocimeter measurement of the flow field. Laser and surface pressure tests were conducted. Pressure tests include low and high angle of attack results of spanwise blowing over a low aspect ratio semi-span model. High angle of attack data include the effects of leading edge vortex control by spanwise blowing. Only low angle of attack data are presented for the laser flow field tests.
