After reading this charming, but highly informative and at times, amusing Victorian travel guide, beautifully illustrated with his own black and white photographs, I realised that Henry and I had much in common. We not only share a passion for tea, but also for that tropical paradise formerly known as Ceylon, where we both spent some of the happiest days of our lives. I first arrived as a traveller in 1980 and later lived there for a few years before returning once again in 1986, armed with a camera. Having walked in Henry's footsteps and photographed the same archaeological sites, I was inspired to use my old black and white negatives and compile an illustrated account of that journey that I made more than thirty-five years ago. I have included many of Henry's observations and anecdotes, together with others from the period, to provide an authentic 19th century, colonial backdrop, to what is otherwise a 20th century journey, in the hope that it may be of some interest to travellers in the 21st century.
