Book The Effects of Professional Development on Online Adjunct Faculty Job Satisfaction in A Community College Setting

Download or read book The Effects of Professional Development on Online Adjunct Faculty Job Satisfaction in A Community College Setting written by Marie Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This quantitative causal comparative research study, guided by Herzberg's (1964) Two Factor Theory of Motivation, and conducted with 106 online adjunct faculty members teaching at a community college in a Southeastern state, examined the effects of four types of professional development (PD) training for online instruction (i.e., fully online, fully face-to-face, blended [online and face-to-face], and none) on online adjunct faculty members' levels of motivation and hygiene job satisfaction. Data were analyzed using two one-way MANCOVAs. The first one-way MANCOVA addressed the first research question, which inquired if there were significant differences across online instruction PD training groups on the motivation job satisfaction factors of general job satisfaction, recognition, and autonomy, controlling for online instruction self-efficacy and age. The second one-way MANCOVA addressed the second research question, which queried if there were significant differences across PD training groups on the hygiene job satisfaction factors of faculty support, salary, and teaching schedule, controlling for online instruction self-efficacy. Results from the first one-way MANCOVA showed that participants in the four online instruction PD training groups did not have significantly different levels of general job satisfaction, recognition and autonomy. Results from the second one-way MANCOVA were significant. Participants in the entirely online PD training group had a significantly lower mean faculty support score than did participants in the blended PD training group. Participants who had not received PD training for online instruction had a significantly lower mean teaching schedule score than did participants in the other three PD training groups.

Book Job Satisfaction Levels Among Adjunct and Full time Faculty in Arkansas Community Colleges

Download or read book Job Satisfaction Levels Among Adjunct and Full time Faculty in Arkansas Community Colleges written by Donald Jacob Hutchinson and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the job satisfaction levels of adjunct and full-time faculty at community colleges in Arkansas. The study used Herzberg's Motivation/Hygiene theory as a framework for understanding job satisfaction and factors that lead to job satisfaction/dissatisfaction. The study also examined the difference in overall job satisfaction between adjunct faculty and full-time faculty. The findings of this study support Herzberg's Motivation/Hygiene theory. Subsequent findings showed that adjuncts are generally more satisfied with their job than their full-time counterparts. The findings of the analyses also identified key components or factors that contribute to the overall job satisfaction of full-time and adjunct faculty members. The research findings should help education leaders to improve the working conditions for faculty at community colleges and help improve the overall job satisfaction of both groups.

Book Evaluating Improving and Judging Faculty Performance in Two Year Colleges

Download or read book Evaluating Improving and Judging Faculty Performance in Two Year Colleges written by Charles Finley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-03-30 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With nearly 48 percent of all U.S. undergraduates attending community and technical colleges, the two-year sector is an integral part of our nation's higher education system and a vital part of our nation's future. The need for effective faculty evaluation and professional development within two-year colleges stems partly from the size of this sector and also from the diversity of its program offerings and its student body. Miller and his co-authors bring timely, authoritative, and practical material to two audiences in this rapidly growing field of education: first, teachers who have permanent appointments but could use professional development and improvement; and, second, the already large and still growing number of part-time instructors who could use more evaluating and improving. This book is intended to be a direct assistance for these groups as well as to administrators who must make personal decisions. This professional book is for human resource managers and staff development officers of two-year colleges. A greater emphasis needs to be placed on human resource management, according to Miller and his co-authors, that will result in better personnel decision making.

Book Center for Teaching and Learning Impact on Adjunct Job Satisfaction

Download or read book Center for Teaching and Learning Impact on Adjunct Job Satisfaction written by Winsome S. Brooks and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adjunct faculty have become a significant part of the collegiate workforce in times of financial constraints; however, they are not supported like their full-time counterparts and have lower career and job satisfaction. Some institutions have responded to the increase in dependence on adjuncts by developing support systems in the form of teaching and learning centers. This phenomenological case study’s purpose was to explore the lived experiences of adjunct faculty using a center for teaching and learning (CTL) and explore the impacts the CTL has on adjunct job satisfaction. A purposive sample of six adjunct faculty, two CTL leaders, and one American Association of Community Colleges leader participated in in-depth interviews recorded through Zoom. The collected data were transcribed and used to construct four major themes and six subthemes through the processes of using in vivo coding, initial coding, and descriptive coding. The major themes included the CTL practices, inclusiveness, confidence, and satisfaction. The findings from this study imply that factors which enhance job satisfaction are totally distinct from those associated with job dissatisfaction; the presence of certain job attributes (motivators) lead to satisfaction, and the presence of hygiene factors, such as working conditions, prevents dissatisfaction. Overall, the results of this study could encourage institutions’ administrators to refine certain features within the CTL to manage adjunct faculty’s job satisfaction.

Book The Perceived Leadership Styles of Academic Team Leaders and the Self reported Job Satisfaction of Community College Adjunct Faculty

Download or read book The Perceived Leadership Styles of Academic Team Leaders and the Self reported Job Satisfaction of Community College Adjunct Faculty written by Carlotta S. Walker and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community colleges have become increasingly reliant on adjunct faculty members to deliver content to their students. The impact adjunct faculty members have on the success of community college students is profound. Researchers found students taught by part-time faculty had less favorable outcomes in terms of persistence, completion, and transfer. Improvement of working conditions for community college adjunct faculty is imperative, as student success may be contingent on these improvements. Researchers have found job satisfaction to be related to performance, effectiveness, and other outcomes. Presumably, adjunct faculty members who are more satisfied with their jobs will have higher performance outcomes. Thus, understanding the level of job satisfaction and the role of leadership styles thereof can have a lasting impact on the success of students. There is a gap in the literature on job satisfaction and the role of leadership styles on job satisfaction of community adjunct faculty. The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study was to examine the relationship between the leadership style employed by the academic team leader and the job satisfaction of community college adjunct faculty members.

Book Community College Faculty Overlooked and Undervalued

Download or read book Community College Faculty Overlooked and Undervalued written by Barbara K. Townsend and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2007-05-11 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public community colleges in the United States enroll approximately 6 million students, about 45 percent of all undergraduates. These students are taught by nearly four hundred thousand full- and part-time faculty members, about whom little is known. The community college professoriate is truly overlooked in the research on postsecondary faculty. When community college faculty are studied, they are often examined through lenses more appropriate for four-year faculty. This volume provides a broad overview of community college faculty: who they are, what they do, and what factors affect their career and work. The authors also analyze community college teaching as a profession in an effort to take a fresh look at community college faculty and their work. The goal is to make all readers come to view community college faculty members as colleague making a distinct contribution to their students and to faculty work. Such an understanding is critical in the current policy environment that values postsecondary education for everyone and sees the community college as a major venue for providing that education. This is the 6th issue of the 32nd volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education. Each monograph in the series is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education problem, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Book Faculty Job Satisfaction at Illinois Community Colleges and the Relationship with Perceived Presidential Leadership Styles

Download or read book Faculty Job Satisfaction at Illinois Community Colleges and the Relationship with Perceived Presidential Leadership Styles written by Pamela Barnes and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examined the relationship between perceived presidential leadership styles and faculty job satisfaction in Illinois Community Colleges. Based on previous research studies in leadership and job satisfaction, two widely accepted and validated survey questionnaires were selected as main instruments for the study. An additional four demographic questions were added in the areas of tenure status, gender, length of service at the institution and level of degree attained to stratify the sample results. The Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) was used to measure presidential leadership styles as perceived by the faculty. The Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) was used to measure faculty job satisfaction. The LBDQ and MSQ questionnaires, and demographic questions were uploaded into Survey Monkey and the link was sent to participants. Data on presidential leadership style and faculty job satisfaction were collected from a sample of 62 full time faculty members from 5 Illinois Community Colleges. The rate of survey return was 15%. Statistical analyses, including ANOVAs, t-tests and Pearson Correlations were performed and descriptive statistics were ran to answer the study's research questions. ANOVAs were conducted to determine whether differences and/or interactions existed in faculty job satisfaction based on perceived presidential leadership style and the faculty demographic variables of length of service and level of degree attained. T-Tests were conducted on the remaining two demographic questions of gender and tenure status. Lastly, Pearson correlations were conducted to determine the relationship between the survey results. The following conclusions were drawn from the statistical analyses. Overall job satisfaction of faculty at Illinois community colleges who responded to the study can be considered "ambivalent". There was a statistically moderate association between the two survey results, overall. The results of the Pearson correlation coefficients proved there is a relationship between six of the eleven LBDQ subscales and overall JSS results. They are: Initiation of Structure, Integration, Role of Assumption, Tolerance of Freedom, Persuasion and Representation. None of the demographic responses statistically impacted job satisfaction or perceptions of presidential leadership styles.
