Book An Examination of Handling Qualities Criteria for V STOL Aircraft

Download or read book An Examination of Handling Qualities Criteria for V STOL Aircraft written by Seth B. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been undertaken to define hand-ling qualities criteria for V/STOL aircraft. With the current military requirements for helicopters and airplanes as a framework, modifications and additions were made for conversion to a preliminary set of V/STOL requirements using a broad background of flight experience and pilots' comments from VTOL and STOL aircraft, BLC (boundary-layer-control) equipped aircraft, variable stability aircraft, flight simulators and landing approach studies. The report contains a discussion of the reasoning behind and the sources of information leading to suggested requirements. The results of the study indicate that the majority of V/STOL requirements can be defined by modifications to the helicopter and/or airplane requirements by appropriate definition of reference speeds. Areas where a requirement is included but where the information is felt to be inadequate to establish a firm quantitative requirement include the following: Control power and damping relationships about all axes for various sizes and types of aircraft; control power, sensitivity, d-amping and response for height control; dynamic longitudinal and dynamic lateral- directional stability in the transition region, including emergency operation; hovering steadiness; acceleration and deceleration in transition; descent rates and flight-path angles in steep approaches, and thrust margin for approach.

Book An Analytical Study of V STOL Handling Qualities in Hover and Transition

Download or read book An Analytical Study of V STOL Handling Qualities in Hover and Transition written by R. L. Stapleford and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hover analysis considers pilot attitude and position control tasks in the presence of horizontal gusts. The effects of each of the stability derivatives on the difficulty of the control tasks and on the closed-loop gust responses are determined. It is clearly shown that the handling qualities studies of control sensitivity and angular damping must consider the influences of M sub u (or L sub v) and should include gust inputs. These conclusions are substantiated by previous variable-stability-helicopter experiments. The effects of vehicle size and geometry are investigated by several approaches. The key result of increasing size is found to be a reduction in M sub u and L sub v which can, in turn, lower the requirements for control power and damping. The handling qualities during transition of two vehicles, a tilt duct and a tilt wing, which were previously tested on a simulator are analyzed. It is shown that both trim control and perturbations about the trim conditions must be considered. In fact, part of the increased difficulty in landing transitions, in comparison with takeoff transitions, is due to more difficult trim control; the much more stringent position control requirements in landing are also a contributing factor.

Book Suggested Requirements for V stol Flying Qualities

Download or read book Suggested Requirements for V stol Flying Qualities written by Paul R. Curry and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Technical Memorandum presents suggestions for a specification on flying and handling qualities requirements for subsonic V/STOL aircraft. In addition to including the ideas of many others, the authors have incorporated two basic suggestions: (1) the use of a pilot rating system (since the ultimate measures of handling qualities are determined by the pilot) and (2) the use of servo-analysis techniques and terms to define quantitative requirements. There are no statistical or quantitative data available to verify the stated requirements in some cases; however, the requirements are based on many different V/STOL research aircraft funded by the U.S. Army and flown by U.S. Army pilots. Book Analysis of VTOL Handling Qualities Requirements

Download or read book Analysis of VTOL Handling Qualities Requirements written by Samuel J. Craig and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses of available handling qualities data were performed to determine lateral/directional dynamic requirements for VTOL aircraft in hover and low speed flight. The basis for this treatment is an examination of the pilot/vehicle as a closed-loop servo system. The quasi-linear pilot describing function is applied. The results of the studies suggest that the primary factors identifying satisfactory and unacceptable hover mode dynamic features are related to the closed-loop deficiencies. Detailed consideration is made of the control task and piloting functions in transition flight. The results of this generic appraisal are evoked to confirm and justify preliminary lateral/directional requirement for control in transition. (Author).

Book A Study of Conventional Airplane Handling Qualities Requirements

Download or read book A Study of Conventional Airplane Handling Qualities Requirements written by I. L. Ashkenas and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a codification in two parts of conventional aircraft handling qualities criteria. The results of this effort are to serve as an intermediate design guide in the areas of lateral-directional oscillatory and roll control. The roll handling qualities portion of this report uses as a point of departure the concept that control of bank angle is the primary piloting task in maintaining or changing heading. In the lateral oscillatory portion of this effort, in defining requirements for satisfactory Dutch roll characteristics, a fundamental consideration is the fact that the motions characterizing this mode are ordinarily not the pilot's chief objective. That is, he is not deliberately inducing Dutch roll motions in the sense that he induces rolling and longitudinal short-period motions. A worthwhile approach to establishment of Dutch roll damping requirements is to first establish the basic level, and then to study the varied influences of the disturbance parameters. This approach provides the basis for the material contained in this report.

Book A Study of Conventional Airplane Handling Qualities Requirements

Download or read book A Study of Conventional Airplane Handling Qualities Requirements written by I. L. Ashkenas and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report uses as a point of departure the concept that control of bank angle is the primary piloting task in maintaining or changing heading. Regulation of the bank angle to maintain heading is a close-loop tracking task in which the pilot applies aileron control as a function of observed bank angle error. For large heading changes, the steady-state bank angle consistent with available or desired load factor is attained in an open-loop fashion; it is then regulated in a closed-loop fashion throughout the remainder of the turn. For the transient entry and exit from the turn, the pilot is not concerned with bank angle per se, but rather with attaining a mentally commanded bank angle with tolerable accuracy in a reasonable time, and with an easily learned and comfortable program of aileron movements.

Book V Stol Aircraft Design Sensitivity to Flying Qualities Criteria

Download or read book V Stol Aircraft Design Sensitivity to Flying Qualities Criteria written by Billy B Brassell (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary designs were developed for four generically different V/STOL airplane concepts. Two of the airplanes used lift/cruise fans and were designed to satisfy high altitude, subsonic Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) mission requirements. The other two airplanes used different jet lift and lift/cruise propulsion concepts and were designed for supersonic, Deck Launched Intercept (DLI) mission requirements. The sensitivities of each airplane to provisions for flying qualities were evaluated and were related to selected flying qualities characteristics. The study outlines a procedure and methodology that can be followed in future studies for assessing design sensitivity to flying qualities. The assessment procedure can be relatively simple in hover and cruise flight regimes, but may require extensive analysis in forward flight and transition flight regimes. Generally design sensitivities were found to be configuration specific, since takeoff gross weight sensitivity to thrust margin and propulsion control provisions can vary among different types of propulsion systems. Mission sensitivities were less variant between airplanes designed for similar missions. Design sensitivities to hover control power were by far the most significant to V/STOL design, and support a high priority need for satisfactory VTOL control power criteria.

Book A Flight Investigation of Lateral Directional Handling Qualities for V STOL Aircraft in Low Speed Manoeuvring Flight

Download or read book A Flight Investigation of Lateral Directional Handling Qualities for V STOL Aircraft in Low Speed Manoeuvring Flight written by K-H Doetsch (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation to determine the ranges of various lateral-directional characteristics required to provide adequate flying qualities for turning manoeuvres at low speed was undertaken using an airborne V/STOL aircraft simulator. Five parameters were varied in a systematic manner: the damping ratio, the frequency and the ratio of the roll-angle to the sideslip-angle in the Dutch roll mode, together with the damping ratio and frequency of the numerator quadratic of the roll-angle to aileron-control-input transfer function. The pilots performed a low speed, visual manoeuvring task and documented their assessment of the characteristics through extensive comments and a numerical rating. (Author).
