Book Reading the Word of God in the Presence of God

Download or read book Reading the Word of God in the Presence of God written by Vern S. Poythress and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biblical interpretation is typically viewed as concerned with understanding the human author’s intended meaning. However, for Christians, the Bible is first and foremost God’s Word and must be understood in that light. Helping Christians approach the Bible with God in mind, this book sets forth a more nuanced approach to biblical interpretation that pays attention to both the human and divine origins of these sacred texts. Whether it’s reviewing the three basic steps of interpretation or emphasizing the importance of paying attention to the Christ-centered character of both the Old and New Testaments, this book is a much-needed resource for the church as it wrestles to defend the authority of Scripture in our increasingly relativistic world.

Book The Great Principle of the Mediation and Atonement of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Great Principle of the Mediation and Atonement of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ written by John Taylor and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-09-17 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'The Great Principle of the Mediation and Atonement of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ' by John Taylor, the author delves into a detailed analysis of fundamental Christian doctrines related to the mediation and atonement of Jesus Christ. Taylor presents his arguments in a clear and concise manner, drawing upon both scripture and theological writings to support his claims. The book is written in a scholarly style, with a focus on making theological concepts accessible to a wide audience within the literary context of 19th-century religious discourse. John Taylor, a prominent figure in the early history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, possessed a deep understanding of Christian theology and doctrine. His background as a religious leader and theologian undoubtedly informed the writing of this book, as he sought to provide a comprehensive exploration of key principles central to the Christian faith. I highly recommend 'The Great Principle of the Mediation and Atonement of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ' to readers interested in delving into the theological underpinnings of Christian beliefs. This book offers valuable insights and interpretations that will deepen one's understanding of the essential doctrines of Christianity.

Book Christology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gerald O'Collins
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2009-07-08
  • ISBN : 019160965X
  • Pages : 906 pages

Download or read book Christology written by Gerald O'Collins and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-07-08 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fully revised and updated second edition of his accessible account of systematic Christology, Gerald O'Collins continues to challenge the contemporary publishing trend for sensationalist books on Jesus that are supported neither by the New Testament witness nor by mainline Christian beliefs. This book critically examines the best biblical and historical scholarship before tackling head-on some of the key questions of systematic Christology: does orthodox faith present Jesus the man as deficient and depersonalized? Is his sinlessness compatible with the exercise of a free human will? Does up-to-date exegesis challenge his virginal conception and personal resurrection? Can one reconcile Jesus' role as universal Saviour with the truth and values to be found in other religions? What should the feminist movement highlight in presenting Jesus? This integral Christology is built around the resurrection of the crucified Jesus, highlights love as the key to redemption, and proposes a synthesis of the divine presence through Jesus. Clear, balanced, and accessible, this book should be valued by any student reading systematic theology, anyone training for the ministry in all denominations, as well as interested general readers.

Book Interpretation of the Scripture

Download or read book Interpretation of the Scripture written by Arthur Pink and published by Darolt Books. This book was released on 2020-07-17 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man is notoriously a creature of extremes, and nowhere is that fact more evident than in the attitude taken by different ones to this subject. According some have affirmed the Bible is written in such simple language that it calls for no explaining, a far greater number have suffered the papists to persuade them that its contents are so far above the grasp of the natural intellect, its subjects so profound and exalted , its language so abstruse and ambiguous that the common man is quite incapable of understanding it by his own efforts, and therefore that it is the part of wisdom for him to submit his judgment to "holy mother church," who brazenly claims to be the only Divinely authorized and qualified interpreter of God's oracles. Thus does the Papacy withhold God's Word from the laity, and impose her own dogmas and superstitions upon them. For the most part the laity are quite content to have it so, for therefore they are relieved of searching the Scriptures for themselves. Nor is it much better with many Protestants, for in most cases they are too indolent to study the Bible for themselves, and believe only what they hear from the pulpits. The main passage appealed to by Romanists in an attempt to bolster up their pernicious contention that the Bible is a dangerous bookbecause of its alleged obscurityto place in the hands of the common people is Peter 3:15, 16. Therein the Holy Spirit has told us that the apostle Paul, according to the wisdom given him, spoke in his epistles of "some things hard to be understood, which they are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. " But as Calvin long ago pointed out, "We are not forbidden to read Paul's epistles because they contain some things difficult to be understood, but that, on the contrary, they are commended to us, providing we have a calm and teachable mind." It is also to be noted that this verse says "some things" and not "many," and that they are "hard" and not "incapable of being understood"! Moreover, the obscurity is not in them, but in the depravity of our nature which resists the holy requirements of God, and the pride of our hearts which disdains seeking enlightenment from Him. The "unlearned" here refers not to illiteracy, but to being untaught of God; and the "unstable" are those with no settled convictions, who, like weathervanes, turn according to whatever wind of doctrine blows upon them. This important book by Arthur Pink tells us about the importance of interpreting the scriptures and leads us to meditate on the Word of God. A text based entirely on the Holy Bible.

Book Ritual

    Book Details:
  • Author : Catherine Bell
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2009-12-29
  • ISBN : 0199739471
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book Ritual written by Catherine Bell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-29 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From handshakes and toasts to chant and genuflection, ritual pervades our social interactions and religious practices. Still, few of us could identify all of our daily and festal ritual behaviors, much less explain them to an outsider. Similarly, because of the variety of activities that qualify as ritual and their many contradictory yet, in many ways, equally legitimate interpretations, ritual seems to elude any systematic historical and comparative scrutiny. In this book, Catherine Bell offers a practical introduction to ritual practice and its study; she surveys the most influential theories of religion and ritual, the major categories of ritual activity, and the key debates that have shaped our understanding of ritualism. Bell refuses to nail down ritual with any one definition or understanding. Instead, her purpose is to reveal how definitions emerge and evolve and to help us become more familiar with the interplay of tradition, exigency, and self-expression that goes into constructing this complex social medium.
