Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate assessment of environmental hazards and related risks is a primary prerequisite for effective environmental health protection, at both the individual and collective level. National and regional policies on environmental health need to be guided by knowledge about the risks to the populations involved; as the Environmental Action Plan for Europe notes, 'priority setting requires the comparative assessment of risks to health of different environmental factors against the cost of controlling them.' In recent years this has assumed particular importance, for with the encouragement of the World Health Organisation (WHO), all countries in Europe are committed to producing National Environmental Health Action Plans (NEHAPs), which will define priorities and targets for environmental health and the actions needed to achieve them. Reliable information on risks is clearly fundamantal to this process. Individual risk assessment is no less important in this context. Much of the responsibility and capacity to improve public health lies ultimately in the choices (e.g. about diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, sexual activities, sporting activities, travel mode, place of residence and occupation) which we make as individuals. If we are to improve and protect our own health, therefore, and in so doing play our personal role in achieving the targets set by these Plans, we need to be guided by a clear understanding of the risks involved.

Book Evaluation of Air Quality Models with Near road Monitoring Data

Download or read book Evaluation of Air Quality Models with Near road Monitoring Data written by Mohamadreza Farzaneh and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air dispersion models (air quality models) are used in evaluation of transportation projects to ensure their compliance with federal regulations including the National Environmental Policy Act and transportation conformity quantitative hot-spot analysis requirements. The literature indicates a wide range of variabilities involved in the modeling process for the particulate matter (PM) hot-spot analysis. Sparse real-world data have limited the ability to evaluate the variabilities involved in the PM hot-spot analysis process. Availability of near-road monitoring data has provided a new source of data to address this gap. The objective of this study was to perform a modeling evaluation of the regulatory hot spot analysis and conduct a data research of the near-road monitoring observations to evaluate the potential association between the near-road PM2.5 concentrations and the key parameters. The study was performed for two case study sites in Texas, namely Houston and Fort Worth. The modeling process evaluation consisted of investigating the model behavior and variabilities involved in the PM2.5 hot-spot process through a series of sensitivity analyses. The results of the modeling variability analysis highlighted significant variations of the estimated near-road concentrations as a result of typical modeling options and data sources used in conducting a PM2.5 hot-spot analysis. The range of variability was highest for the model options, followed by model choice, and data source. In addition to sensitivity analysis, the data exploration indicated that the background concentration is the dominating factor in estimating the near-road PM2.5 concentrations. Traffic volume and speed were found to have a relatively weak association with the near-road concentrations of PM2.5 for the two case study sites. Wind direction and speed were found to have a stronger association with the concentrations; however, the lack of hourly near-road concentration data at the time of this study prevented a detailed analysis of this potential correlation at an hourly resolution

Book Modelling Urban Vehicle Emissions

Download or read book Modelling Urban Vehicle Emissions written by M. Khare and published by Computational Mechanics. This book was released on 2001 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vehicular air pollution poses the main threat to urban air quality and is therefore one of the major components of urban air quality studies. Air quality models can play an effective role in the efficient management of such pollution.
