Book excerpt: This book comprises components associated with smart water which aims at the exploitation and building of more sustainable and technological water networks towards the water–energy nexus and system efficiency. The implementation of modeling frameworks for measuring the performance based on a set of relevant indicators and data applications and model interfaces provides better support for decisions towards greater sustainability and more flexible and safer solutions. The hydraulic, management, and structural models represent the most effective and viable way to predict the behavior of the water networks under a wide range of conditions of demand and system failures. The knowledge of reliable parameters is crucial to develop approach models and, therefore, positive decisions in real time to be implemented in smart water systems. On the other hand, the models of operation in real-time optimization allow us to extend decisions to smart water systems in order to improve the efficiency of the water network and ensure more reliable and flexible operations, maximizing cost, environmental, and social savings associated with losses or failures. The data obtained in real time instantly update the network model towards digital water models, showing the characteristic parameters of pumps, valves, pressures, and flows, as well as hours of operation towards the lowest operating costs, in order to meet the requirement objectives for an efficient system.

Book excerpt: SYNER-G, a multidisciplinary effort funded by the European Union, allowed the development of an innovative methodological framework for the assessment of physical as well as socio-economic seismic vulnerability and risk at urban and regional level. The results of SYNER-G are presented in two books both published by Springer, the present and a second one, entitled “SYNER-G: Typology Definition and Fragility Functions for Physical Elements at Seismic Risk: Buildings, Lifelines, Transportation Networks and Critical Facilities”(*), which provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art of the fragility curves, an alternative way to express physical vulnerability of elements at risk. In this second volume of SYNER-G, the focus has been on presenting a unified holistic methodology for assessing vulnerability at systems level considering interactions between elements at risk (physical and non-physical) and between different systems. The proposed methodology and tool encompasses in an integrated fashion all aspects in the chain, from hazard to the vulnerability assessment of components and systems and to the socio-economic impacts of an earthquake, accounting for most relevant uncertainties within an efficient quantitative simulation scheme. It systematically integrates the most advanced fragility functions to assess the vulnerability of physical assets for buildings, utility systems, transportation networks and complex infrastructures such as harbours and hospitals. The increasing impact due to interactions between different components and systems is treated in a comprehensive way, providing specifications for each network and infrastructure. The proposed socio-economic model integrates social vulnerability into the physical systems modelling approaches providing to decision makers with a dynamic platform to capture post disaster emergency issues like shelter demand and health impact decisions. Application examples at city and regional scale have provided the necessary validation of the methodology and are also included in the book. The present volume, with its companion volume on fragility functions, represent a significant step forward in the seismic vulnerability and risk assessment of complex interacting urban and regional systems and infrastructures. These volumes are not only of interest to scientists and engineers but also to the insurance industry, decision makers and practitioners in the sector of civil protection and seismic risk management. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inelastic buckling is the most important failure mode of a steel beam column element subjected to compression force. In order to correctly predict this phenomenon, large rotations, large displacements and the plasticity of the section along the element must be considered. Several formulations have been proposed to model problems with three dimensional large displacements and rigid body dynamics. They are usually based in the Lagrangian or the Corotational methods and are primarily oriented to solve mechanical and aerospace problems, although some applications to structural stability do exist. Independently, several formulations have been developed to model plasticity: fiber elements, plastic flow theory and lumped plasticity are popular choices. In this dissertation a novel formulation capable of solving problems with displacement and material nonlinearities in a unified way is developed. Thus, the State Space approach is selected because all the basic equations of structures: equilibrium, compatibility and plasticity are solved simultaneously and thus the global and local states are mutually and explicitly dependent. To incorporate geometric nonlinearities, the Corotational approach, where rigid body motion and deformations are described separately, is adopted. To incorporate material nonlinearities, the formulation developed by Simeonov (1999) and Sivaselvan (2003) is included. In general, the set of equilibrium, compatibility and plasticity equations constitute a system of Differential Algebraic Equations (DAE). A procedure to solve such system exists and is implemented in the package IDA (Implicit Differential Algebraic solver) developed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), which is used to solve the problem numerically. An experimental study on "zipper frames" was conducted to assess the accuracy of the proposed formulation. A "zipper frame" is a chevron braced frame where the beam to brace connections are linked through columns, called "zipper columns". The failure mode of a "zipper frame" is the successive inelastic buckling of its braces. Three shake table tests of a three stories "zipper frame" were performed at the UB-NEES laboratory. A model of the first story of the "zipper frame" was analyzed with the new formulation and its results compared to experimental data. It is found that the new formulation can reproduce the features of the test and it is very sensitive to all the model parameters. Results are presented
