Book excerpt: The onesize-fits-all model of traditional teacher education programmes has been widely criticized, yet the most popular alternative - fast-track programs - have at best a mixed record of success. There is a third option: "grow-your-own" teacher preparation programmes tailored to specific school contexts and the needs of the populations they serve. In Inspiring Teaching, Sharon Feiman-Nemser and her colleagues investigate this "context specific" approach to teacher education.

Book An Investigation of Pre service Teachers Collegiate Preparation to Teach Character Education in Catholic Elementary School

Download or read book An Investigation of Pre service Teachers Collegiate Preparation to Teach Character Education in Catholic Elementary School written by Louis P. DeAngelo and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of pre-service teachers' collegiate prepration to address character education in Catholic elementary school was conducted using a qualitative design. Three instruments were utilized in gathering data for this study: (a) the Education Chairperson Interview Questionnaire that provided data about the collegiate perspective in pre-service programs preparing teachers to address character education, (b) the Novice Teacher Survey that gathered data about first-year teachers' perceptions of their collegiate preparation program in both secular and Catholic institutions, and (c) the Novice Teacher Interview Questionnaire whereby data was probed to ascertain the needs first-year teachers had regarding character education teaching in Catholic elementary school. Triangulation yielded data about character education in pre-service teacher programs at secular and Catholic colleges and the self-perceived needs of first-year teachers. An interpretation of the interrelationship among the data provided a perspective on research questions. It appeared that secular and Catholic colleges addressed character education interwoven throughout core courses in teacher preparation programs. First-year teachers perceived a greater need for more direct instruction of character education content and pedagogy at the collegiate level and for ongoing support at the local school level in the first teaching year.

Book The People who Work There

Download or read book The People who Work There written by Remigia Kushner and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey instrument was developed and administered to full-time elementary teachers working in Catholic elementary schools. Of the questionnaires distributed in the six regions served by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), 1,076 (52 percent) were returned. Over 90% respondents were Catholic and female, with no background as members of a religious order; 63% had received at least 4 years of Catholic schooling themselves. Most expressed high degrees of job satisfaction. Respondents' perceptions and attitudes on financial issues, Church teachings, social concerns, quality of education, and teacher involvement are discussed, and conclusions and recommendations based on these findings are offered. Teachers in Catholic schools earned an average of $6,000 per year less than public school peers; most felt that high costs of Catholic schooling prevented many families from enrolling their children. Younger teachers and teachers who had spent less time in Catholic schools as students were considerably more likely to disagree with Church teachings on birth control, abortion, and homosexuality. Younger teachers were also found to value tolerance and broadmindedness in general more highly than Church membership. Attitudes toward conflict resolution were widely divided. Five appendices include: a copy of the survey instrument; the letter to principals in participating schools; the letter to the teachers; second letter to principals; and the survey and responses.
