Book excerpt: A unique compaction test method similar to ASTM Test for Moisture-Density Relations of Soils, Using 10-lb (4.5-kg) Rammer and 18-in. (457-mm) Drop (D 1557-70) was developed and evaluated in the course of a National Cooperative Highway Research Program study of density standards for field compaction of granular base and subbases conducted at Clemson University. The new test method, called the Marshall Hammer Compaction Test, utilizes a standard 1/30 ft3 (944.64 cm3) mold as specified in ASTM Test D 1557-70, Method C, but the 10-lb (4.53-kg) Marshall hammer is substituted for the 10-lb (4.53-kg) Proctor hammer. Also, forty blows for each of the five layers are used to provide a total compaction effort of 90 000 ft-lbs/ft3 (4362.6 kN.m/m3) for the new test.

Book excerpt: Current test procedures for determining the density properties of aggregate and hot mix asphalt mixtures (HMA) are time consuming and subjective. The density can have significant impact on the performance of asphalt pavements. Three devices (SSDetect, CoreLok, and CoreDry) which can significantly reduce testing time were independently evaluated. Three experiments were performed to evaluate these devices. In the first experiment, specific gravity and absorption of two aggregate types (coarse sand and number 11 limestone) were conducted. The second experiment evaluated the HMA mixture bulk specific gravity (Gmb) of two mixture types (open graded friction coarse and dense graded). The last experiment examined the HMA Gmb of roadway cores. It is noted that the results from these test devices were compared to their counterpart conventional ones. Ten laboratories in Louisiana participated in this experimental program. In general, the SSDetect single operator and multilaboratories precision of both aggregate specific gravity measurements were better than that determined from American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) T84. Furthermore, the results from the SSDetect device did meet the AASHTO precision criterion. Also, HMA Gmb precision values for the CoreLok were similar to that of AASHTO T166 for both mixtures. HMA Gmb values computed from results of the CoreDry device were similar to the ones determined from conventional method for the roadway cores.

The people in the Aggregate Section of the Central Materials Laboratory perform the AASHTO T-85 test for AMRL inspections and reference samples. Iowa's test method 201B, for specific gravity determinations, requires more time and more care to perform than the AASHTO procedure. The major difference between the two procedures is that T-85 requires the sample to be weighed in water and 201B requires the 2 quart pycnometer jar. Efficiency in the Central Laboratory would be increased if the AASHTO procedure for coarse aggregate specific gravity determinations was adopted. The questions to be answered were: (1) Do the two procedures yield the same test results? (2) Do the two procedures yield the same precision? An experiment was conducted to study the different test methods. From the experimental results, specific gravity determinations by AASHTO T-85 method were found to correlate to those obtained by the Iowa 201B method with an R-squared value of 0.99. The absorption values correlated with an R-squared value of 0.98. The single operator precision was equivalent for the two methods. Hence, this procedure was recommended to be adopted in the Central Laboratory.
