Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Welsh History This work does not pretend in any sense to be a history of Wales, or to give any consecutive narrative of all the movements that have affected the fortunes of the Principality. It differs in many important respects from a regular history. It was rather to dwell upon the dramatic phases of historical events and upon the religious and sociological phenomena, and to concern itself but slightly with the growth of Welsh institutions as such, that it was written. Not much account has, therefore, been taken of proportion. So much has been said and written of late years respecting the rapid advance of Wales in population, in commerce, in education, in the facilities for education, in political ambition, and in her progress towards selfgovernment, that I have deemed it of interest and of importance, not merely to Welshmen, but to other sections of the United Kingdom, to discuss the problem or problems involved in this development, and to endeavour to furnish an adequate account of the causes which have led up to the changes that have taken place. The question presents grounds for a reconsideration of many of the conclusions formed by Welsh nationalist historians, and of the whole lines of argument hitherto adopted by them. Their deductions are, I contend, without justification. In other words, their synthesis or the traditional formulas by which they have sought to explain the forces that have operated in the evolution of Welsh national life, have been based upon false facts and false inferences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Welsh People: Chapters on Their Origin, History, Laws, Language, Literature, and Characteristics In issuing a third edition of this book, we desire to say that we have tried to profit by the criticisms passed upon our work. We have not, however, deemed it expedient at present to enlarge its scope by dealing with topics to which it has been alleged, rightly or wrongly, we have not given sufficient space or attention. Errors which have been pointed out by reviewers or which we have ourselves discovered have been, we believe, duly corrected. We also wish to express our gratitude for the kindness with which these chapters have been received by all those who are interested in the past and present condition of the Welsh People. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in Welsh Literature The substance of these pages was delivered at the First Baptist Church, of Edwardsdale, and we feel that no apology is needed for publishing the same, though it is presented in a very imperfect form. To have the history of the Bible amongst the most constant Bible reading people in the world must be an interesting matter to all. The history of the Welsh magazines is a part of the history of in religion in Wales, and is important apart from its literary value. How the Welsh Bible and magazines were left out of such a work as the "Encyclopedia Britannica" we are at a loss to understand. We hope, however, that the next edition of that excellent work will include articles on these subjects. Until something better will appear, these two essays, we hope, will be of help to those who desire to know more than they do in this respect. Shall we also hope that they may create that desire in others who have it not? The article on the First Welsh Biblical Dictionary is given partly in order to do justice to the author of that book.
