Book The Worldview of Personalism

Download or read book The Worldview of Personalism written by Jan Olof Bengtsson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personalism is understood today as the name of an important current in twentieth-century thought which, inspired by the Christian and humanistic traditions of the West, has sought to deepen our understanding of the meaning and value of human personhood. Opposing both individualism and collectivism, personalism has stressed the uniqueness of each person, the meaning and value of interpersonal relations, and the unity that holds persons together and is, ultimately, also personal in itself: the person of God. Personalism's insights into the nature of personhood have broad implications for our view of ethics, politics, education, and religion. The history of personalism has, however, been poorly understood. Jan Olof Bengtsson shows that personalism began as early as the eighteenth century and was a central, international current of thought throughout the nineteenth century - that it was, in fact, more characteristic of the nineteenth century than of the twentieth.

Book An Essay on Personality as a Philosophical Principle

Download or read book An Essay on Personality as a Philosophical Principle written by Wilfrid Richmond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on Personality as a Philosophical Principle The following essay is intended to illustrate a philosophical principle, not to establish a philosophical conclusion. The only legitimate principle of philosophy is experience, of which philosophy professes to be the interpretation. But it is rash to assume that we know what we mean by experience without explicit statement and discussion. Some particular aspect of experience we are each of us sure to emphasize. It is well to describe clearly the aspect under which we are disposed to assert that experience should primâ facie be viewed. This will be the philosophical principle. If the principle or the aspect of experience which we wish to present happens to involve differences from the views commonly assumed in philosophical literature, this full and free description of the point of view at starting is the more necessary. In any case an hypothesis must be entertained before it can be proved, and it must be stated before it can be entertained. And a philosophical principle is such an hypothesis.
