Book excerpt: Escape the City is the perfect guide for people who live in the city or suburbs and want to move to the country. This is the "missing manual" that tells you absolutely everything you need to know on thousands of topics that you never even realized existed. Whether you're interested in shopping for a used tractor, starting garden seeds in a grow tent, logging your own trees, planting a berry patch, breeding sheep, arranging for firewood delivery, making ten gallons of hearty soup from a pig skeleton, installing solar electric power, or fighting invasic species, Escape the City has the information you need. There are endless books on gardening, farming, and homesteading. Why this book?* Other books don't have sufficient breadth. EtC covers absolutely everything related to living in the country.* Other books have blind spots about the basic stuff. EtC explains the "obvious" stuff: the difference between straw and hay, and between discing plowing and rototilling.* Other books don't spell out the details. EtC has checklists, choices for different budgets, and step by step instructions.Escape the City explains all of the basics - everything from buying a tractor to fertilizing gardens - and concludes with dozens of recipes for farm-to-table dishes like Apple Pie with lard crust, Maple Creme Brulee, Pork Stock, Duck Leg Confit, Pork and Pumpkin Soup, Lamb Chops, and even a Whole Pig Roast.

In a world where everyone is judged on their wealth and how many orbs they have, Pell, Logan, and Maddy can’t keep up, no matter how hard they try. When Pell’s Uncle Colin suggests they take themselves off the grid and leave Fortress City to join him in the Wild West, they leap at the chance. At Colin’s direction, they erase all traces of their existence in Fortress City’s databases and leave under cover of darkness. Almost immediately, they rethink their decision, as they battle hostile monsters and the elements just to stay alive and reach their destination. When they finally get to Uncle Colin’s homestead, they are devastated to find it is run-down and barely livable. Shortly after they arrive, Uncle Colin unceremoniously bids them farewell and takes off on a secret mission. The kids, disillusioned, go back to Fortress City, only to be turned away because they are no longer in the system. The kids are forced to return to the homestead and use only their knowledge and resources to fortify it against the elements and hostile invaders. As they struggle to stay alive, they begin to wonder: what is Uncle Colin really up to, and will he ever come back?

Schwab's City of Ghosts and Serafina and the Black Cloak. Emmaline Black has a secret. She can hear the rhythm of heartbeats. Not just her own, but others' too. It's a rhythm she's learned to control, and that can only mean one thing . . . Emma's a witch. In a world where a sentence of witchcraft comes with dire consequences and all children who have reached the age of thirteen are tested to ensure they have no witch blood, Emma must attempt to stamp out her power before her own test comes. But the more she researches, the more she begins to suspect that her radically anti-witch aunt and mother are hiding something -- the truth about their sister, her Aunt Lenore, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances years ago. The day of the test comes, and Emma's results not only pair her up with strange new friends, but set her on a course to challenge everything she's ever been taught about magic, and reveal long-buried family secrets. It seems witches may not have been so easy to banish after all. Secret cities, untapped powers, missing family members -- Emma is about to discover a whole new world.

  • Pages : 263 pages

Download or read book Escape to the City written by Viola Franziska Müller and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-09-07 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viola Franziska Muller examines runaways who camouflaged themselves among the free Black populations in Baltimore, Charleston, New Orleans, and Richmond. In the urban South, they found shelter, work, and other survival networks that enabled them to live in slaveholding territory, shielded and supported by their host communities in an act of collective resistance to slavery. While all fugitives risked their lives to escape slavery, those who fled to southern cities were perhaps the most vulnerable of all. Not dissimilar to modern-day refugees and illegal migrants, runaway slaves that sought refuge in the urban South were antebellum America's undocumented people, forging lives free from bondage but without the legal status of freedpeople. Spanning from the 1810s to the start of the Civil War, Muller reveals how urbanization, work opportunities, and the interconnectedness of free and enslaved Black people in each city determined how successfully runaways could remain invisible to authorities.

Book How to Escape from a Leper Colony

Download or read book How to Escape from a Leper Colony written by Tiphanie Yanique and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2012-08-07 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enthralling debut collection from a singular Caribbean voice For a leper, many things are impossible, and many other things are easily done. Babalao Chuck said he could fly to the other side of the island and peek at the nuns bathing. And when a man with no hands claims that he can fly, you listen. The inhabitants of an island walk into the sea. A man passes a jail cell's window, shouldering a wooden cross. And in the international shop of coffins, a story repeats itself, pointing toward an inevitable tragedy. If the facts of these stories are sometimes fantastical, the situations they describe are complex and all too real. Lyrical, lush, and haunting, the prose shimmers in this nuanced debut, set mostly in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Part oral history, part postcolonial narrative, How to Escape from a Leper Colony is ultimately a loving portrait of a wholly unique place. Like Gabriel García Márquez, Edwidge Danticat, and Maryse Condé before her, Tiphanie Yanique has crafted a book that is heartbreaking, hilarious, magical, and mesmerizing. An unforgettable collection.

Ash and his ragtag crew of misfits aboard the Frostheart sleigh have just pulled into Aurora: the most dazzling city Ash has ever seen. Icy skyscrapers, wondrous new foods, and bustling city folk who barely have the time of day for a smalltown kid like him. That is, until he masters the art of songweaving--the ability control the giant monsters that lurk in the snow beyond city limits. But the real reason Ash came to Aurora is to find his long lost parents. The only token they left him before their disappearance was a lullaby; a map disguised as a song that has led him from landmark to landmark, all in the hopes of finding them at the end of it. With the help of his best friend Lunah, the fast-talking ship's navigator, and his yeti guardian, Tobu, Ash is one step closer to finding the family he's always longed for. He might find, though, that getting what you wished for is more complicated than he imagined, and Ash's world is about to expand in ways he never thought possible.
