Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epitome of the History of Medicine: Based Upon a Course of Lectures Delivered in the University of Buffalo That a second edition of a work of this character should be called for within a year after the appearance of the first is naturally a source of the greatest satisfaction to its writer, while it indicates as well that his sincere hope has been fulfilled, in that the profession generally are manifesting a deep, genuine interest in the important subjects of which it briefly treats. This has been so uniformly the expressed opinion of the book reviewers that I have been the more anxious to correct the trifling errors inseparable from the first appearance of any book, and even venture to agree with them, in the hope that a larger and more comprehensive work may yet be the outcome of an interest in this History of Medicine. Particularly am I indebted to those who have kindly taken the trouble to call my attention to a few inaccuracies contained in the first edition; and I wish here to express my obligation to them all, and especially to Dr. Auzal, of New York, for kind services of this character. The only regret of the author is that, in a work of this necessarily limited scope, it is possible to give only what the title indicates, - i.e., an epitome of the history of medicine, rather than a more comprehensive account, which alone should satisfy the more studious. I have added a supplementary chapter on "Iatrotheurgic Symbolism," as being quite germane to the general subject of the book. It appeared originally as the "Annual Oration" delivered by invitation before the Maine Medical Association in June, 1898, and is substantially reproduced from their Transactions. Book Innovation in Byzantine Medicine

Download or read book Innovation in Byzantine Medicine written by Petros Bouras-Vallianatos and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byzantine medicine remains a little known and misrepresented field not only in the context of debates on medieval medicine, but also among Byzantinists themselves. It is often viewed as 'stagnant' and mainly preserving ancient ideas, and our knowledge of it continues to be based to a great extent on the comments of earlier authorities, which are often repeated uncritically. This volume presents the first comprehensive examination of the medical corpus of, arguably, the most important Late Byzantine physician: John Zacharias Aktouarios (c.1275-c.1330). Its main thesis is that John's medical works show an astonishing degree of openness to knowledge from outside Byzantium combined with a significant degree of originality, in particular, in the fields of uroscopy and human physiology. The analysis of John's edited (On Urines and On Psychic Pneuma) and unedited (Medical Epitome) treatises is supported for the first time by the consultation of a large number of manuscripts, and is also informed by evidence from a wide range of medical sources, including those previously unpublished, and texts from other genres, such as epistolography and merchants' accounts. The contextualization of John's corpus sheds new light on the development of Byzantine medical thought and practice, and enhances our understanding of the Late Byzantine social and intellectual landscape. Through examination of his medical observations in the light of examples from the medieval Latin and Islamic worlds, his theories are also placed within the wider Mediterranean milieu, highlighting the cultural exchange between Byzantium and its neighbours.

Book Writing History in the Age of Biomedicine

Download or read book Writing History in the Age of Biomedicine written by Roger Cooter and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-18 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIV A collection of ten essays paired with substantial prefaces, this book chronicles and contextualizes Roger Cooter’s contributions to the history of medicine. Through an analysis of his own work, Cooter critically examines the politics of conceptual and methodological shifts in historiography. In particular, he examines the “double bind” of postmodernism and biological or neurological modeling that, together, threaten academic history. To counteract this trend, suggests Cooter, historians must begin actively locating themselves in the problems they consider. The essays and commentaries constitute a kind of contour map of history’s recent trends and trajectories—its points of passage to the present—and lead both to a critical account of the discipline’s historiography and to an examination of the role of intellectual frameworks and epistemic virtues in the writing of history. /div

Book Doctors

Download or read book Doctors written by Sherwin B. Nuland and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of How We Die, the extraordinary story of the development of modern medicine, told through the lives of the physician-scientists who paved the way. How does medical science advance? Popular historians would have us believe that a few heroic individuals, possessing superhuman talents, lead an unselfish quest to better the human condition. But as renowned Yale surgeon and medical historian Sherwin B. Nuland shows in this brilliant collection of linked life portraits, the theory bears little resemblance to the truth. Through the centuries, the men and women who have shaped the world of medicine have been not only very human, but also very much the products of their own times and places. Presenting compelling studies of great medical innovators and pioneers, Doctors gives us a fascinating history of modern medicine. Ranging from the legendary Father of Medicine, Hippocrates, to Andreas Vesalius, whose Renaissance masterwork on anatomy offered invaluable new insight into the human body, to Helen Taussig, founder of pediatric cardiology and co-inventor of the original "blue baby" operation, here is a volume filled with the spirit of ideas and the thrill of discovery.
