Book An Episcopalian Demand for Christian Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Episcopalian Demand for Christian Schools Classic Reprint written by Thomas McMillan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Episcopalian Demand for Christian Schools The introduction of religion into state schools in any form commensurate with the needs of the children is out of the question. Herein lies the hopelessness of the present situa tion; and the sooner this point is understood and conceded by all parties interested the sooner this most important of all subjects before Church and State today can be argued -to a finish. 'no Protestant, Roman Catholic, Jew, agnostic, or atheist is willing to be taxed to help some one else choose the religion which shall be taught his child. According to our theory of government, and we might say in the sight of God and men, this would not be fair; and therefore it cannot, and will not, be done. Book Ministerial Education in the Methodist Episcopal Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ministerial Education in the Methodist Episcopal Church Classic Reprint written by Stephen M. Vail and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ministerial Education in the Methodist Episcopal Church The object of this work is to defend the propriety and to show the importance of thorough ministerial education in general, and especially in the Methodist Episcopal church. Our fathers understood their mission when they declared that they believed it to be God's design in raising up the Methodist ministry "to reform the continent and to spread scriptural holiness over these lands." They considered themselves to be under the direction of divine Providence, and we of this generation consider ourselves to have the best grounds for this belief. They were called upon to meet a great emergency of the times in spreading the knowledge of the gospel in this newly-settled country. We honor their memories because they ran in the way in which divine Providence directed them. They did their work. They did it nobly, and have gone to their rest. No doctrine of importance can be transferred in a matured shape into any man's understanding from without: it must arise by an act of genesis within the understanding itself." - De Quincey. Book Education Through the Agency of Religious Organizations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Education Through the Agency of Religious Organizations Classic Reprint written by William H. Larrabee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education Through the Agency of Religious Organizations The Protestant Episcopal church in the United States was organized in 1785 as a logical result Of the separation of the colonies from the mother country. Avowing its indebtedness to the Church Of England, it embodied a formal declaration in the preface to its Prayer Book Of an intention not to depart from the faith of that church in any essential point Of discipline or worship, or further than local circumstances required. The first Protestant Episcopal theological seminary was Opened in 1820, after the subject had been discussed for six years, and was constituted in 1821 the General Theological seminary of the church, to be under its control, with the distinct understanding that the action was to be no hin drance to any state or diocese establishing a seminary Of its own. The privilege has been freely exercised by the dioceses, and there are now sixteen theological seminaries in different parts of the church. Twelve collegiate and 1 16 academical institutions, under diocesan or local control, were reported to the general convention in 1901. The report Of the United States commissioner Of education for 1900 - 01 gives the Episcopalians 664 teachers and students in 88 secondary Schools. Among the earlier colleges established after the forma tion Of the general convention were Trinity college, Hart ford, Conn. Hobart college, Geneva, N. Y. And Kenyon college, Gambier, Ohio The last, and the theological seminary at the Same place, were pioneer institutions in the extension of the church westward. The University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., is the fruit of a plan that was formed by Bishop Otey, the first bishop Of Tennessee, to establish a large institution under the control of the Episcopal church, in which religion should go hand in hand with every lesson of a secular character, and young men be prepared for the ministry. The scheme was revived by Bishop Polk in 1856, and the co-operation of the bishops of nine southern dioceses was secured to carry it out. The institution was broken up almost at its beginningby the Civil war; but its operations were renewed in 1868. It includes eleven departments or schools. Book The Relations of Christian Denominations to Colleges

Download or read book The Relations of Christian Denominations to Colleges written by Henry S. Pritchett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations of Christian Denominations to Colleges: An Address Before the Conference on Education of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, at Atlanta, Ga;, May 20, 1908 In beginning a paper which concerns the relations of religious organizations to institutions of higher learning, I may perhaps be allowed a word in regard to the work and scope of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This new institution, but recently endowed by Mr. Andrew Carnegie with fifteen millions of dollars, is not a charitable institution, but an educational agency. It deals with colleges, universities, and technical schools in the United States, Canada, and Newfoundland, and is the only institution at the present moment which is directly concerned with the educational interests of the whole of English-speaking North America. The purpose of the Foundation is the service of higher education by strengthening and dignifying the calling of the teacher. It does this, directly, by the establishment of a retiring allowance system in such colleges and universities as may become eligible to its benefits. The professor in such an institution receives his retired pay through his college just as he receives his salary, in accordance with definite rules, as a right, not as a favor. In case of his death, his widow receives as a pension the half of the retiring salary to which her husband was entitled. Indirectly, the Foundation seeks to serve higher education and the cause of the teacher by insisting on the maintenance of reasonable and honest college standards in the institutions with which it deals, by publishing specific information concerning colleges and universities, by the discussion of educational questions, and in general by serving the part of a central agency in relation to educational interests in the United States, Canada, and New-foundland. In making this gift, Mr, Carnegie imposed upon his trustees the condition that the retiring allowance system should not be extended to teachers in institutions which are under the control of a sect, or which require their trustees, officers, or teachers to belong to a specified denomination. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conditions and Prospects of the Protestant Episcopal Church Such being our sad condition, what must we think of those who endeavor to cover up the whole matter, and cry peace, peace, when there is no peace? What must We think of such men? IS it not to be feared that the character of too many of them'may be learned in the parable of the tares While men slept the enemy came and sowed tares. These professed friends of the church wish us to sleep on. Why, say they, disturb the peace of the church?' There is no reason for apprehension all is well; or, at least, will turn out well, if we only keep Still. Thus do they, with good words and fair Speeches, deceive the hearts Of the simple. And when this smooth course 'fails; and men cannot be cajoled, but will lift up the voice of honest alarm; why then they' must be branded as disturbers of the church, and their influence in this way be destroyed. Thus do these men endeavor to Quiet every fear, hinder an investigation, and suppress every faithful remonstrance. What, then, professed friends Of the church sowed tares while men slept. Book Idea of Popular Schooling in Upper Canada

Download or read book Idea of Popular Schooling in Upper Canada written by Anthony Di Mascio and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Idea of Popular Schooling in Upper Canada, Anthony Di Mascio analyzes debates about education in the burgeoning print culture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In it, he finds that a widespread movement for popular schooling in Upper Canada began in earnest from the time of the colony's first Loyalist settlers. Reviving the voices of Upper Canada's earliest school advocates, Di Mascio reveals the lively public discussion about the need for a common system of schooling for all the colony's children. Despite different and often contentious opinions on the means and ends of schooling, there was widespread agreement about its need by the 1830s, when the debate was no longer about whether a popular system of schooling was desirable, but about what kinds of schools would be established. The making of educational legislation in Upper Canada was a process in which many inhabitants, both inside and outside of government, participated. The Idea of Popular Schooling in Upper Canada is the first full survey of schooling in Canada to focus on the pre-1840 period and how it framed policy debates that continue to the present day.
