Book The London School of Economics Works of William H Beveridge

Download or read book The London School of Economics Works of William H Beveridge written by William H. Beveridge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteen years when William Beveridge was Director of the LSE, saw some of the School’s greatest expansion. The years between the wars presented a number of problems discussed in this book, such as those of finding space in the heart of London, of the proper scope and method of economics, of academic self-government and of political activity by university readers of social sciences. The last chapter tells of the author’s forty years of friendship with Sidney and Beatrice Webb, using letters between him and them that had not been published before publication of this book in 1960.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mandell Creighton (1843-1901) was a famous historian and the first editor of the English Historical Review. His intelligence and energy made an impression upon everyone he met. Admired by Queen Victoria, only his untimely death stopped him becoming Archbishop of Canterbury. His wife Louise (1850 -1936) was a prolific historian in her own right. Her strength of character and organisational ability made her a natural leader of Victorian women's movements. The writings of this remarkable couple, especially their letters, reveal their relationships with each other and with their seven children, their work and home life, their servants, houses, holidays in Italy, and the pleasures of their lives together.

Book Man and the Social Sciences Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Man and the Social Sciences Routledge Revivals written by William Alexander Robson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most significant movements in the world of learning in the twentieth century was the rise and development of the social sciences. However, few attempts have been made to see how far social scientists have travelled on the road to studying and understanding human society. First published in 1972, the lectures reprinted in this book aim to trace the development of the social sciences during the twentieth century and to show the role of the London School of Economics and Political Science in this development since it was founded in 1895. Each of the very distinguished lecturers was asked to take the larger view, to be critical where necessary, to treat his subject in the context of the world of learning. The result is a survey of exceptional interest in which the growth of the social sciences is analysed from a number of contrasting viewpoints, each of which ranges widely and often with provocative brilliance over themes that are of general concern. The introduction by Professor W.A. Robson, which was not part of the original lecture series, is in itself a critical assessment of the field that will be read with close attention.

Download or read book Haldane written by John Campbell and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can you name the creator of the Territorial Army, the British Expeditionary Force, the Imperial General Staff, and the Officers' Training Corps? The man who laid the foundation stones of MI5, MI6, the RAF, the LSE, Imperial College, the "redbrick" universities, and the Medical Research Council? This book restores Richard Burdon Haldane to his rightful place among the great men of British and Canadian history. Serving as war minister in the 1905 Liberal British government, his groundbreaking proposals on defence, education, and government structure were astonishingly ahead of his time – the very building blocks of modern Britain. Even the Canadian Constitution, as now interpreted, is unthinkable without Haldane. His ubiquitous networks ranged from Wilde to Einstein, Churchill to Carnegie, king to kaiser; his polymathic interests enabled pioneering cross-party, cross-sector cooperation. Yet in 1915 he was ejected from the Lord Chancellorship, unjustly vilified by an ignorant press campaign as a German sympathizer. John Campbell charts these ups and downs, reveals the intensely personal side of Haldane through previously unpublished love letters, and shows his enormous relevance in our search for just societies and states today. Amidst political and national instability, it is surely now right to reinstate Haldane as an outstanding example of true statesmanship.

Book The Universities in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book The Universities in the Nineteenth Century written by Michael Sanderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title, first published in 1975, analyses the ways in which developments in Victorian universities have shaped both the structure and the assumptions of British higher education in the twentieth century. No period of British higher education has been more full of change nor so rooted in fundamental debate than the second half of the nineteenth century. Its lasting impact makes it crucial for an understanding both of this period of Victorian social history and of the contemporary system of higher education in Britain. This title will be of interest to students of history and education.

Book The Works of William H Beveridge

Download or read book The Works of William H Beveridge written by Various and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 1944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Beveridge (1879-1963) was a key figure in the modernization of British economic and social policy who published widely on unemployment and social security. Among his most notable works and reprinted in this set are, Full Employment in a Free Society (1944), and Pillars of Security (1943). Beveridge’s Report on social insurance was published in 1942. It proposed that all people of working age should pay a weekly national insurance contribution. In return, benefits would be paid to people who were sick, unemployed, retired or widowed. Beveridge included as one of three fundamental assumptions the fact that there would be a National Health Service of some sort. Beveridge's arguments were widely accepted. He argued that welfare institutions would increase the competitiveness of British industry in the post-war period, not only by shifting labour costs like healthcare and pensions onto the public account but also by producing healthier, wealthier and more productive workers. Beveridge saw full employment as the pivot of the social welfare programme he expressed in the 1942 report. As well as making available some of Beveridge’s key, and in some case, lesser known works, this set includes as its final volume an indispensable overview of Beveridge and his prolific work.
