Download or read book An Empirical Investigation of Annual Reporting Trends of Intellectual Capital in Sri Lanka written by Indra Abeysekera and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the annual reports of each of the top 30 firms listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in the period 1998/1999 to 1999/2000, using the 'content analysis' method. The findings indicate that the most reported accounting category during this period was external capital and the second most reported was human capital. There was an increase in the frequency of intellectual capital reporting over the 2 years, which this paper explains using political economy of accounting theory. Interestingly, the individual intellectual capital items of each capital category reported by firms in Sri Lanka differed from those found in other countries. It is hoped that the findings of this pioneering study can be used as a benchmark for future studies in Sri Lanka and in other developing countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To ascertain the status of intellectual capital reporting in a developing nation, this pioneering study examined annual reports of top 30 companies by market capitalization listed in the Colombo stock exchange, Sri Lanka in 1998/1999. They were analyzed using content analysis and data were recorded in a theoretically backed coding framework with 45 intellectual capital items categorized into internal, external and human capital. The findings indicated that most reported was external capital by frequency and human capital by line count. Intellectual capital was mostly reported as narratives. Only a small proportion of intellectual capital reported was quantified. Of the eight pre-defined sections, most were reported in 'other' section of the annual report. The individual items of each capital category reported by firms in Sri Lanka differed from those found in developed countries. The findings can be used as a benchmark for future studies.

Book Reporting Intellectual Capital in Spain

Download or read book Reporting Intellectual Capital in Spain written by Ester Oliveras and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reports on the analysis of annual reports from 14-listed companies in Spain over a five-year period, from 1998 to 2002. Companies in the sample are selected on the basis of their knowledge-based assets and incentives to report on Intellectual Capital. The empirical analysis is twofold: 1) Firstly, we analyze the value of intellectual capital using a value-based approach, through the difference between market and book value over the period considered. Results show that there is a general decrease in the 'hidden value' of these companies, probably due to the general trend in stock markets. 2) Secondly, we carry out a content-based analysis of the complete annual reports of the companies over the five year period. Preliminary findings seem to suggest that although the level of disclosure has increased over time, this is mainly in the form of narrative. Overall, the level of disclosure of intellectual capital remains low.

Book Corporate Reporting of Intellectual Capital

Download or read book Corporate Reporting of Intellectual Capital written by Jeffrey Unerman and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports the results of an empirical investigation into the intellectual capital reporting (ICR) practices of UK companies in four distinct sectors. It differs from prior ICR studies in that it analyses a wide range of external corporate reporting media for their IC content. It finds major differences between the intellectual capital elements reported in each sector studied, and finds an overall sector effect which is at variance with the expected overall sector effect. The study also finds that a range of corporate media were used for communicating intellectual capital information, and that the annual reports were not a good proxy for the proportion of disclosures across all corporate media.
