Abstract: Abstract Abstract of thesis entitled "A Taxonomy of Strategic Practices: An Empirical Investigation of Manufacturing Firms in the PRD" Submitted by LAI Man Shan Hilda for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in September 2005. Strategic practices form the link between manufacturing strategy and strategic performance. This research begins by pointing out that prior studies appeared to lean overwhelmingly towards the investigation of manufacturing strategy as the sole cornerstone in developing competitive advantages. A loophole appeared to exist concerning the adoption of strategic practices as the linkage in sharpening competitive advantage. This research study uncovers and examines from a network perspective the underlying patterns of strategic practices in four manufacturing sectors: (1) apparel, (2) electrical and electronic, (3) metal and machinery, and (4) plastics and toys in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) and identifies the external factors that contribute to the adoption of seven specific strategic practices: cross functional integration, JIT practice, concurrent engineering, organizational learning, supplier relationship, customer focus and information sharing. Through a questionnaire survey, this research identified that technology intensity and demand uncertainty are the key drivers contributing to the adoption of strategic practices: they were found to be inversely related. A taxonomy of strategic practices is established with four manufacturing clusters: network H.M.S. Lai Page ii integrator, network learner, network follower and network isolator, of which the former three clusters appear proactive in adopting strategic practices, while the last does not. It is expected that the three former clusters will shift to a more demand uncertain condition as a result of global integration, while the other cluster will anticipate intense competition and a need to struggle for survival. This study also finds that the JIT practice is the least consolidated strategic practice among industrialists in the PRD. With the taxonomy derived of strategic practices, this research will help guide practitioners who seek to develop competitive advantages and will also contribute to the research field of strategy management through exploring the patterns of strategic practices from the empirical context. Book Strategic Responses to Low cost country Competition

Download or read book Strategic Responses to Low cost country Competition written by Peter Körte and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the recent decade economic growth of low-cost countries outstripped Western countries by far. Facing stagnant markets at home, Western firms have considered China, South-East Asia, and Eastern European countries as an opportunity for growth. But as these economies mature, new competitors also emerge with expansion strategies not only limited to their domestic markets. Thereby these firms benefit from lower factor costs, giving them a competitive advantage in exports destined for Western markets. Considering low-cost countries as a challenge rather than as an opportunity, the key question is: how should Western manufactures respond to increased low-cost-country competition? Yet this question remains largely unexplored despite its growing practical relevance. Based on a survey among 210 German and 213 US manufacturing companies this book summarizes the results out of a research project conducted at the WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management in Germany. The content is directed to academics, managers, and consultants alike who are interested to learn more about: i) the set of strategies best suited in response to competitors from low-cost-countries and how these responses differ with respect to national differences between Germany and the USA, ii) those environmental and company characteristics that have a significant influence on the choice of the respective strategy, iii) environmental characteristics that either intensify or weaken the degree of low-cost-country competition in a specific industry, and iv) the impact on financial performance of the respective strategy chosen as a response to low-cost-country competition.

Book American Manufacturing in a Global Market

Download or read book American Manufacturing in a Global Market written by Kenneth Chilton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The health of American manufacturing has been a cause of real concern during the 1980s. Foreign competition, hostile takeovers, new technologies and a host of other factors have caused dramatic changes in this key sector of the American economy. Many ob servers of this process of change are singing the "rust belt blues," consigning U.S. manufacturing greatness to the history books. In April 1986, the Center for the Study of American Business at Washington University issued a study by its director, Dr. Murray L. Weidenbaum, which challenged this perception of American manu facturing's future. The report, entitled Learning to Compete, pointed to a variety of positive developments resulting from the ad versity faced by American firms in the first half of the decade: pro ducers had improved quality and productivity, reduced costs, and in creased emphasis on R&D. In November 1988, as a logical extension of this research, the Center held a conference on American Manufacturing in the 1990s. Focusing on American responses to the changing global competitive environment, this conference brought together the practical experi ence of business professionals and the more detached views of aca demic and media experts. In a day and a half of meetings, encompassing six separate ses sions, a luncheon address and an after-dinner debate, conference participants assembled an extensive profile on the state of U.S.

Book International Manufacturing Strategies

Download or read book International Manufacturing Strategies written by Per Lindberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-12-31 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last twenty years, there has been an increasing number of factors that have placed the manufacturing strategies of companies and countries in a global context. This book reviews and addresses the global manufacturing strategy area through research in the four major economic areas of the world: Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia. International Manufacturing Strategies: Context, Content and Change is the result of a single major research project undertaken in twenty countries, focusing on the manufacturing strategies and practices in each, and uses research data to focus on factors specific to industrial countries or regions and those which are common across the group of countries or the entire sample The core of this book is a set of chapters reviewing individual countries. Each country is reviewed in a format with an overall common approach: the socio-economic background; the distinctive results for that country from the research and the link between the two. Most will be illustrated by a small case study of a company. Following this is an integrating review of the findings from various countries, the different trajectories followed, and the impact on external variables and the socioeconomic context on those. The final part of the book is devoted to new ideas and developments in functional areas and in manufacturing strategy that have been developed from the analysis conducted during the research.

Book Product Diversification of U S Manufacturing Firms

Download or read book Product Diversification of U S Manufacturing Firms written by Hsiao-shan Yang and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of two studies. One is about the level of product diversification of multiproduct firms. The other is about the product switching decision of multiproduct firms. Most of the existing studies rely on economies of scope or strategic considerations to explain why firms produce multiple products. However, only a few explain why the level of product diversification varies across multiproduct firms. I extend the Dixit-Stiglitz monopolistic competitive model to analyze product diversification of heterogeneous multiproduct firms, focusing on the role of firm-specific productivity. The model shows that the firm's level of product diversification is determined by and positively related to its productivity at the equilibrium. Using data from the Thomas Register of American Manufacturers and Compustat, I test the prediction of the theoretical model.^To overcome simultaneity bias associated with productivity, I implement a IV estimation where I use the number of product varieties offered by the upstream industries of a firm as the instrumental variable to identify exogenous changes in the firm's productivity. This IV strategy is motivated by Romer (1990) who argues that technological changes can take the form of increases in the variety of intermediate inputs. I find strong and robust empirical evidence consistent with the prediction of the theoretical model--firm productivity is a causal factor for product diversification. To understand product switching decision, I further expand the Dixit-Stiglitz model to allow for product-specific shocks. In this model, firm-specific productivity determines the range of products, and product-specific relative consumer's preference determines the composition of products offered by the firm.^This shows that, in the absence of productivity shocks, product-specific shocks induce product switching--adding the product experienced a positive demand shock and dropping the product undergone a negative shock from its original product portfolio. Assuming that a product experiences positive shocks before the market shakeout and negative shocks after shakeout as it goes through its life cycle, this result suggests that the incidence of product switching is positively correlated with the proportion of the firm's products that are in the early (growing) stage of their life cycles. This prediction is confirmed in the empirical estimation. In addition to product-specific demand shocks, I also find that larger and older firms as well as firms facing greater market competition are more likely to switch products.

Book Potential Foreign Competition in U S Manufacturing

Download or read book Potential Foreign Competition in U S Manufacturing written by Vivek Ghosal and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade barriers are falling and firms are competing in increasingly open international markets. The data reveal considerable heterogeneity across industries in the intertemporal path of import-shares. Against this backdrop, we focus on an issue that is increasingly important for competition policy analysis: "potential" foreign competition. Inadequate attention to this aspect could result in a biased picture of total competition, leading to misguided antitrust decisions. Drawing on the conceptual framework outlined by Landes and Posner (Harvard Law Review, 1981), we measure potential foreign competition by the intertemporal response of industry import-share to industry-specific and aggregate economic factors, and our estimates indicate wide variation across industries in this dimension. A particularly striking finding is that highly concentrated industries, which are more likely to be subject to antitrust scrutiny, have a greater degree of potential foreign competition than industries with low concentration, even though the extent of actual foreign competition is similar across these groups of industries.

This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the basis of discussions and analysis of the current environment for international competition, this book was written to dispel misconceptions regarding the motivating forces behind internationalization and, therefore, to improve understanding of both the challenges and the opportunities of a global market and production base. Important consequences of internationalization for both manufacturers and national policy are described. The volume provides an assessment of what it takes to be successful as manufacturers and as a nation in the international competitive environment.

Book excerpt: Recently, the international division of labour in industrial production has grown increasingly more volatile. The separation between 'high-end' tasks undertaken in the traditional core economies and 'low-end' tasks undertaken in newly emerging economies has become increasingly blurred. The new dynamics and unpredictability of actor and process configurations in internationalized production bring new challenges for research in economic geography, regional economics and management sciences. The allocation of R&D and production mandates within or between enterprises, the setting up, closing down, purchase or sale of subsidiaries at different localities, the shifting patterns of collaborative innovation, together with newly evolving forms of capitalism, all appear to interact in ways not seen before. It appears we have entered a new era termed 'industrial transition'. This book forms the first approach toward conceptualising the term and compiling illustrative empirical underpinnings. Contributions by an international set of renowned economic geographers highlight the major features and case studies of 'industrial transition' and address various questions that matter for the future of our global economy: How are regions and localities affected by the shift of product mandates? In which ways do changes differ between industrial sectors and economic regions? How can regions and localities adequately prepare for or react to foreseeable changes; and how can regional resilience and response capacities be built and enhanced?
