Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water-Analysis: A Practical Treatise on the Examination of Potable Water The first edition of this book was published in the spring of the year 1868. The second edition was a reprint with some additional matter contributed by Chapman. The third' edition, brought out soon after the death of Chapman, was in many respects a new book. It appeared in the spring of 1874, and has been reproduced in successive editions ever since. With the tenth edition, which is now called for, the time has arrived for revising and recasting the book so as to embody the results of a very ripe experience. In 1868, as Chapman and myself wrote in our preface, this was the first book which had been published on Water Analyst's; and our task was rendered possible by the then recent discovery of that wonderful reaction whereby albumen and albuminoid substances were made to evolve ammonia in a powerfully oxidising solution. The ammonia so generated we named Albuminoid Ammonia, and the quantity of that ammonia is the measure of the potential albumen in drinking-water. On this basis we have built up water-analysis for general sanitary purposes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Inland Waters: An Elementary d104 Book of Fresh-Water Biology for American Students The study of water life, which is today the special province of the science of limnology*, had its beginning in the remote unchronicled past. Limnology is a modern name; but many limnological phenomena were known of old. The congregating of fishes upon their spawning beds, the emergence of swarms of May - flies from the rivers, the cloudlike flight of midges over the marshes, and even the water bloom spreading as a filmy mantle of green over the still surface of the lake such things could not escape the notice of the most casual observer. Two of the plagues of Egypt were limnological phenomena; the plague of frogs, and the plague of the rivers that were turned to blood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Potable Water: How to Form a Judgment on the Suitableness of Water for Drinking Purposes; Addressed to Medical Officers of Health, and Sanitary Authorities, Etc Now that the public-health Act has conferred powers on Sanitary Authorities to institute proceedings with'a view to closing impure wells and other sources of supply, and has left the decision to the local magistrates, it becomes more than ever desirable that some standard should be set up as a guide in such matters. The bench of magistrates listening to the conflicting statements of experts is like a rudderless ship at sea, without any exact knowledge to guide their decisions, or data upon which to form an opinion. It is hoped and believed that a consideration of the question conceived in an unbiassed Spirit may tend to reduce order out of chaos, and that here as in most other things common-sense will come largely to our aid. Book The Microscopy of Drinking Water Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Microscopy of Drinking Water Classic Reprint written by George Chandler Whipple and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Microscopy of Drinking-Water This book has a twofold purpose. It is intended primarily to serve as a guide to the water analyst and the water-works engineer, describing the methods of microscopical examina tion, assisting in the identification of the common microscopic organisms found in drinking water and interpreting the results in the light of environmental studies. Its second purpose is to stimulate a greater interest in the study of microscopic aquatic life and general limnology from the practical and economic standpoint. The work is elementary in character. Principles are stated and briefly illustrated, but no attempt is made to present even a summary of the great mass of data that has accumulated upon the subject during the last decade. The illustrations have been drawn largely from biological researches made at the laboratory of the Boston Water Works and from the reports of the Massachusetts State Board of Health. In considering them one should remember that the environmental conditions of the Massachusetts water-supplies are not universal, and that every water-supply must be studied from the standpoint of its own surroundings. As far as the microscopic organisms are concerned, however, the troubles that they have caused in Massachusetts may be considered as typical of those experienced elsewhere. Book excerpt: Section 304(a) (1) of the Clean Water Act 33 U.S.C. 1314(a) (1) requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to publish and periodically update ambient water quality criteria. These criteria are to accurately reflect the latest scientific knowledge (a) on the kind and extent of all identifiable effects on health and welfare including, but not limited to, plankton, fish shellfish, wildlife, plant life, shorelines, beaches, aesthetics, and recreation which may be expected from the presence of pollutants in any body of water including ground water; (b) on the concentration and dispersal of pollutants, or their byproducts, through biological, physical, and chemical processes; and (c) on the effects of pollutants on biological community diversity, productivity, and stability, including information on the factors affecting rates of eutrophication and organic and inorganic sedimentation for varying types of receiving waters. In a continuing effort to provide those who use EPA's water quality and human health criteria with up-to-date criteria values and associated information, the document was assembled. The document includes summaries of all the contaminants for which EPA has developed criteria recommendations.
