However, their performance is usually constrained by various factors. Thus, this research is basically aimed at investigating key determinants of performance among micro-enterprise businesses in Dodola town of Oromia region. It examines the extent to which performance of micro-enterprises is associated with characteristics of the owner and business constraints. To this end, primary data were gathered using interview schedule from a sample of 112 micro-enterprises selected using stratified random sampling. Besides, two Focus Group Discussions were held with fourteen randomly selected micro-entrepreneurs. To further triangulate the data Key informant interviews were held with three MSE office heads. Then after primary data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Characteristics of the enterprises and their entrepreneurs were analyzed using percentage, mean, median and standard deviation. On the other hand, Pearson's chi-square(x2), paired sample t-test and multinomial logistic regression were used to make inferences about the subject under investigation. In this study, performance of micro-enterprises was measured in terms of two main indicators namely profit and employment growth. The results of paired t-test indicated statistically significant mean difference in socio-economic status of entrepreneurs before and after starting micro-enterprise business. The multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that education, experience, location and access to formal credit source are significant predictors of profit growth.

The assumption is that area-based initiatives provide a means by which enterprise can include all members of society in mainstream social and economic activities. The rationale behind Enterprise, Deprivation and Social Exclusion is to critically challenge the notion that enterprise can address the complexity behind deprivation and social exclusion by demonstrating UK and North American examples. We see how enterprise has come to be regarded as a means by which poverty can be reduced and new opportunities can be opened up to support individuals. However, the authors here seek to give a greater appreciation to the structural roots of deprivation and pose questions about whether or not enterprise might actually exacerbate structures of social and economic exclusion. Micro enterprises are an integral part of planned strategy for securing balanced development of the economy of the poor women. Rural women's participation in agro-based activities is much more than what statistics reveal. The study was conducted with the following specific objectives; to evaluate the role of self Help Groups in women entrepreneurship in Vellapatti village. To assess the perception of beneficiaries about the role of SHGs. To evaluate the working of the SHGs in Vellapatti village. The present study is based on both primary and secondary data. Primary data have been collected by conducting a survey among 75 sample respondents from 9 Self Help Groups in different areas of Vellapatti village of Tuticorin town. Eight respondents were selected from each Self Help Group. Random sampling technique was used to select the respondents. Percentage analysis, averages, chi square test and probability analysis were used. The data relates to the month of April 2012. The study reveals that 17.33 percent of the sample respondent's suggestions to improve the performance of SHGs are to provide more loans, whereas 60 percent and 22.67 percent of the sample respondents' suggestion is to provide loan at right time and to provide loan at lesser rate of interest. Microfinance has been one of the few effective tools for poverty reduction over the past years. Through the creation of self help groups, poor people can safely deposit money and accumulate funds for future investments or emergencies as well as access loans for productive purposes leading to higher incomes. Women are participating in all the productive activities and are at par with men. Government, banks and other financial institutions should come forward to offer loans for rural women, so that women entrepreneurs' movement in India will work on right direction to empower more and more women in social, economical, cultural and in political matters.

The Women Enterprise Fund (WEF) was established in 2007 to assist women in the development of their enterprises. One condition of funding by WEF is that beneficiaries must first undergo capacity building before getting the funds. However, the effects of WEF’s training remains unexplored in Kenya and in particular Thika Sub-County. This study sought to bridge the gap by establishing the effects of WEF’s training on performance of women grocery micro-entrepreneurs in Thika Sub-County in Kenya. The study examined the effects of WEF’s training on the indicators of performance that is, sales, profit, labour and capital. It focused on four specific objectives to: identify the effects of WEF’s training on profits, sales, labour and capital among women grocery micro-entrepreneurs. A cross-sectional descriptive survey research design was used. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling, since it produced the most productive sample to test the research hypotheses. A sample size of 111 women entrepreneurs was used out of a population of 371 women entrepreneurs. Data was collected using structured questionnaires from the respondents. The study was guided by the human capital theory. Paired t-test and ordinate logistic regression were used to analyze quantitative data collected at 5% significance level with the help of STATA software. Validity of the instruments was achieved through expert judgement of the research supervisors and WEF’s officials. Reliability was tested by subjecting the instruments to a pilot study through the test-retest technique. The study established that the type of training had significant effect on the performance of women grocery micro-entrepreneurs. While the frequency of training had no significant effect on the sales of women grocery micro-entrepreneurs. From the study results, the researcher recommends for the performance of women micro-entrepreneurs to improve drastically WEF has to focus more on providing quality training especially market access skills. It is therefore, hoped that the outcomes and recommendations of this study will be of help to WEF and other women entrepreneurship stakeholders to address the performance challenges in Thika Sub-County and the nation at large.

Many developing countries have attempted to put in place various intervention programmes to address factors that affect the graduation of women owned micro-enterprises; unfortunately many of them are policies yet to be implemented. Through the assistance from Nyeri municipal-council, the researcher acquired the target population of Micro-Enterprises within Nyeri town which was the survey under study. The research design that the researcher used was the descriptive survey research design. Variables, for instance financial accessibility was looked at among others and their influence on graduation of micro-enterprises. The instruments that the researcher used was the Questionnaire and Interviews. The researcher came up with comprehensive results that can be useful to women in micro-enterprises and the Government at large. Pre-testing procedure was carried out to ensure the validity and reliability of the data to be collected. A descriptive statistic procedure was used to carry out the data analysis. Bar-charts, tables and pie-charts are used for data presentation. Some of the major findings in this research include the fact that many women operating micro-enterprises started their enterprises with personal savings as they could not access loans from formal institutions due to lack of collateral- Due to their low level of education, majority of them exhibited challenges in record keeping as well as marketing which are very essential for graduation of an enterprise from micro to small.
