Book Regional Economic Development

Download or read book Regional Economic Development written by Robert J. Stimson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional economic development has attracted the interest of economists, geographers, planners and regional scientists for a long time. And, of course, it is a field that has developed a large practitioner cohort in government and business agencies from the national down to the state and local levels. In planning for cities and regions, both large and small, economic development issues now tend to be integrated into strategic planning processes. For at least the last 50 years, scholars from various disciplines have theorised about the nature of regional economic development, developing a range of models seeking to explain the process of regional economic development, and why it is that regions vary so much in their economic structure and performance and how these aspects of a region can change dramatically over time. Regional scientists in particular have developed a comprehensive tool-kit of methodologies to measure and monitor regional economic characteristics such as industry sectors, employment, income, value of production, investment, and the like, using both quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis, and focusing on both static and dynamic analysis. The 'father of regional science', Walter lsard, was the first to put together a comprehensive volume on techniques of regional analysis (Isard 1960), and since then a huge literature has emerged, including the many titles in the series published by Springer in which this book is published.

Book Regional Economic Planning

Download or read book Regional Economic Planning written by R. C. Jensen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979. Decision makers at all levels need sufficiently detailed information on regional economic structure in order to undertake consistent and comprehensive regional planning. A means is put forward here, elevating the impracticable regional input-output method, to that of an operational planning technique. This development represents a system which facilitates the examination both of the economic structure of individual regions in reasonable detail, and of the regional structure of the state economy. The technique, termed the Generation of Regional Input-Output Tables (GRIT), is designed for general use in the production of regional input-output tables, and other data sources contributing towards the holistic accuracy of the table, thereby providing accurate maximisation of input-output tables within a given budget constraint.

Book Regional Economic Modeling A Systematic Approach to Economic Forecasting and Policy Analysis

Download or read book Regional Economic Modeling A Systematic Approach to Economic Forecasting and Policy Analysis written by G.I. Treyz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional economic models are the key to predicting the effects of transportation, economic development, energy, fiscal and environmental policies. Despite this, the principal regional economic policy analysis model used throughout the United States by government agencies, universities, and the private sector has not been presented in a book until now. The approach to building, understanding and using regional models presented in Regional Economic Models: A Systematic Approach to Forecasting and Policy Analysis is progressive. It begins with the simplest possible models and concludes with a full presentation of the leading model used by policy makers today. The full details are presented along with facilitating software, which is made available so that the reader can build a prototype model for any state or country and can perform policy simulations with full operational models for a sample area. Policy studies are discussed that have been carried out with the model, as well as the range of ways in which policies can be tested through policy simulations. The necessary background is developed for understanding the ways in which models can be used to improve the basis upon which policies are evaluated, as well as the sensitivity of the predicted effects to the model chosen for the analysis. The presentation is multifaceted and includes equations, diagrams and numerical examples. The professional literature is integrated with introductory materials to produce the first comprehensive book on regional modeling that extends from economic base models to modeling advances that are currently being published in economic journals.

Book Urban Simulation Models for Public Policy Analysis

Download or read book Urban Simulation Models for Public Policy Analysis written by M.H. Whithed and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing that "our present processes of urban community development programs were wasteful and destructive and that our existing urban development programs were contributing to that waste and destruction",l the U. S. Congress enacted the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1970 with the stated objective "the development of a national urban growth policy". The most inno 2 vative portion of this legislation was Title VII of this Act which authorizes the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to guarantee loans of up to $50 million to public or private developers of new communities. The Congress looked towards new communities as a strategy to avoid the continuing problems of increased, unplanned urban growth and the associated inefficient and wasteful use of land resources, pollution of air and water, inefficient and expensive public services and facilities and segregation of people by 3 income and race • The Office of New Communities Development (ONCD) was established in the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to implement a strong new communities program.
