Book Even aged Management

Download or read book Even aged Management written by David W. Hann and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the basic questions facing the manager interested in practicing even-aged forest management and to explain and evaluate the various analytical tools historically, currently, or potentially useful in answering the questions. Evaluation criteria will include: the way a particular method characterizes the stand or forest; the growth and yield information requirements of the method; the computational burden association with the method; the flexibility of the method as to the form and complexity of the solution; and other pertinent considerations

Book Dynamics Silviculture and Management of Mixed Forests

Download or read book Dynamics Silviculture and Management of Mixed Forests written by Andrés Bravo-Oviedo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The capacity of mixed forests to mitigate climate change effects by increasing resilience and lowering risks is pinpointed as an opportunity to highlight the role of tree species rich forests as part of complex socio-ecological systems. This book updates and presents the state-of-the-art of mixed forest performance in terms of regeneration, growth, yield and delivery of ecosystem services. Examples from more than 20 countries in Europe, North Africa and South America provide insights on the interplay between structure and functionining, stability, silviculture and optimization of management of this type of forests. The book also analyses the role of natural mixed forests and mixed plantations in the delivery of ecosystem services and the best modelling strategy to study mixed forest dynamics. The book is intended to serve as a reference tool for students, researchers and professionals concerned about the management of mixed forests in a context of social and environmental change.

Book Predictor Sort Sampling Tight T s and the Analysis of Covariance

Download or read book Predictor Sort Sampling Tight T s and the Analysis of Covariance written by S. P. Verrill and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years wood strength researchers have begun to replace experimental unit allocation via random sampling with allocation via sorts based on nondestructive measurements of strength predictors such as modulus of elasticity and specific gravity. Although this procedure has the potential of greatly increasing experimental sensitivity, as currently implemented it can easily reduce sensitivity. In this paper we discuss the problem and we present solutions. Given the existence of nondestructive measurements of strength predictors, our methods can be used to reduce sample sizes. We have written a public domain computer program that implements the methods.

Book Continuous Cover Forestry

Download or read book Continuous Cover Forestry written by Timo Pukkala and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the majority of the world’s forest ecosystems are dominated by uneven-sized multi-species stands, forest management practice and theory has focused on the development of plantation monocultures to maximize the supply of timber at low cost. Societal expectations are changing, however, and uneven-aged multi-species ecosystems, selectively managed as Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), are often believed to be superior to monocultures in addressing a wide range of expectations. This book presents methods which are relevant to CCF management and planning: analysing forest structures, silvicultural and planning, economic evaluation, based on examples in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America.

Book Multiaged Silviculture

  • Author : Kevin Laughlin O'Hara
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014
  • ISBN : 0198703066
  • Pages : 227 pages

Download or read book Multiaged Silviculture written by Kevin Laughlin O'Hara and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest scientific and management information on multiaged silviculture, an emerging strategy for managing forestry systems worldwide. Over recent decades, forest science and management have tended to emphasize plantation silviculture. Whilst this clearly meets our wood production needs, many of the world's forests need to be managed far less intensively and more flexibly in order to maintain their natural ecosystem functions together with the values inherent in those processes. Developing multiaged management strategies for these complex forest ecosystems represents a global challenge to successfully integrate available science with sustainable management practices. Multiaged Silviculture covers the ecology and dynamics of multiaged stands, the management operations associated with regeneration, tending, and stocking control, and the implications of this strategy on production, genetic diversity, and stand health. It is primarily aimed at graduate level students and researchers in the fields of forestry and silviculture, but will also be of relevance and use to all professional foresters and silviculturists.
