The emphasis is on freight transportation costs by industry and commodity, but business travel is also included. The importance of the transportation sector is demonstrated using three indicators: its contribution to total gross domestic product; transportation as an intermediate input to goods- producing industries; and transportation margins as a percentage of industrial output and of commodity value.
