Book excerpt: The closing century has been a century of Dictionaries of all kinds. Many of these works comprise several large volumes, and are quite expensive. Very few can afford to make an outlay of fifty or one hundred dollars in order to procure an Encyclopedia. Hence, it has been the object of the author of the present ECCLESIASTICAL DICTIONARY to furnish, in concise form, information upon ecclesiastical, biblical, archaelogical, and historical subjects, and bring the work within reach of everybody by making a small outlay of money. The more than three thousand articles, contained in our Dictionary, have been culled from various standard and up-to-date works. In order not to render the work too bulky, by always giving credit to the authors and their works throughout the text of the book, it was deemed best to confine them to a separate list, as can be seen on page v. The quotations of Scripture arc mostly made from the Latin Vulgate. As it was later decided to make the size of the pages somewhat longer and wider, in order to give the book a nicer form, the total number of pages has not quite reached the original number as advertised. The subjects treated in the ECCLESIASTICAL DICTIONARY, may be classified under the three following heads:-MIXED THEOLOGYHISTORIC THEOLOGYPURE THEOLOGYA Mixed Theology answers especially to the wants of our time. It consists of articles whose characteristics are philosophical, scientific, artistic, and literary. This class of articles has for object to urge our contemporary adversaries, with the help of demonstrative resources that are offered by philosophy, the sciences, arts, and belles-lettres, to admit the great truths, continually attacked by them. They address themselves to all kinds of readers, and, by studying them carefully, may they put into practice the declared proposition of Pope Pius IX., before it was taken up again and embodied into the decrees of the Vatican Council: "The use of reason precedes faith and leads man to it with the help of revelation and grace"; Rationis usus fidem praecedit, et ad eam hominem ape revelationis et gratiae conducit. If some of the articles appear to have been given too much space, then the importance of the subjects makes up for this.Historical Theology has for its object, as the name implies, Theologico Historic Generalities and Varieties. It comprises Popes, Councils, Particular Churches. Religious Orders, Famous Schools, Biographies and Bibliographies. Religious Sects, Ecclesiastical Dignities, etc. Finally. Pure Theology consists of Theological and Exegetical Generalities and varieties; God and the Creation; Christ and all that is directly connected with Our Lord; the Church and the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy; Grace and the Sacraments; Ecclesiastical Morals and Precepts, etc. These are, in great outlines. the subjects treated in the ECCLESIASTICAL DICTIONARY. We shall be judged in the future. For to-day, our only ambition is to be appreciated in the simple .exposition of the subjects contained in our work; and we trust that the book will find many readers, who are solely animated by the love of truth.

Book An Ecclesiastical Dictionary

Download or read book An Ecclesiastical Dictionary written by William Staunton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Ecclesiastical Dictionary: Containing Definitions of Terms, and Explanations and Illustrations of Subjects Pertaining to the History, Ritual, Discipline, Worship, Ceremonies, and Usages of the Christian Church The present work is an out-growth or expansion of a much smaller one prepared by the same author, and published several years ago, under the title of 'a Dictionary of the Church, ' etc. The design of the original work was chie y to illustrate and ex. Plain, in a familiar manner, the External Order, or Polity, the Sacraments, Ritual, Ceremonies, and Usages, of the Protestant Episcopal Church, with an especial reference to the demand for information on such subjects among Churchmen in the United States. As it was thought desirable, at the time, that a book chie y intended for popular use should not be inconveniently large and expensive, it was found necessary to proceed on a plan which limited extremely the range of subjects, and excluded almost all topics of a historical, biographical, denominational, or doctrinal nature, except in those articles where the close coddgo' tion of these elements with the point under discussion furnished a justifiable reason for digression. The plan adopted in the work now presented, is not embarrassed or limited by these restrictions; though it has still been thought expedient to touch only on the margin of the boundless field of doctrinal theology. The work embraces nearly all the matter found in the former 'dictionary of the Church, ' with many corrections and improve ments, suggested by later investigation, or by hints from friendly sources. The department of the Ritual has been rendered more complete and instructive, by the insertion of several hundreds of new articles, based on competent authorities; and by the exten sion or careful revision of several of the articles already written. Book excerpt: John Hardon's comprehensive, one-volume work of reference defining the key terms of Catholicism; updated to include the most recent developments in the Catholic Church. Clear, concise, and faithful, with over 2,000 entries, Catholic Dictionary is the essential Catholic lexicon in the areas of faith, worship, morals, history, theology, and spirituality. Now revised to include the statements of Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II, new movements and devotions, and other recent developments within Catholicism, this edition brings the legacy of Father Hardon into the contemporary era. A worthy companion to Catechism of the Catholic Church and Scott Hahn's Catholic Bible Dictionary, this book is an essential resource for the Catholic reader.
