This year the church in New Durham received an accession of thirty-one members, and the next year twentysix were added. At the October session of the Quarterly Meeting in 1794, neither David Knowlton, an unordained preacher, nor any other member from Pittsfield, was present. Such a delinquency was not allowed to pass unnoticed; and Randall, by instruction, admonished them as follows: "We are this day convened at our Quarterly Meeting, and have a good day, through grace; but feel somewhat grieved at finding--David's seat empty. We wonder at you, brethren, that none of all your meeting are present, when the weather is so pleasant, and the travelling so good." The request for the ordination of Knowlton in 1795 was referred from the Quarterly Meeting to the June session of the Yearly Meeting, and a council of five ministers, each to be accompanied by a layman, was chosen and sent to Pittsfield. It convened with the church August 12th, and the following extract from the church record is here inserted at length, as a specimen examination by the fathers: "1, Chose John Buzzell Chairman. "2. Chose Benjamin Ran dull Clerk. "3. Queried with the candidate as follows: "' Dost thou believe that the Lord has called thee to preach the gospel?' "Answer. 'Yes.' "' Dost thou believe it will be for the glory of God that hands should be laid upon thee, if the council should find satisfaction?' "Answer. 'I dare not draw back.' "* Then give us a reason of thy hope; relate the dealings of God in bringing thy soul from bondage into liberty, and thy call to public improvement.' "He did so; all of which was satisfactory to the council. Questions were proposed as to the fall of man--his 1795.] CHURCH IN CANTERBUBY. 147 restoration by Jesus Christ--the obligations...

Book A History of Original Free Will Baptists Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Original Free Will Baptists Classic Reprint written by Michael R. Pelt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Original Free Will Baptists Original Free Will Baptists are the spiritual descendants of the General Baptists who settled in North Carolina during the colonial period. These General Baptists were the earliest Baptists to settle in the colony and were among the earliest organized religious groups in the colony, preceded only by the Quakers and the Anglicans. The story of these early Baptists has often been overshadowed by the accounts of other and later religious move ments which swept through the settlements of North Carolina and the rest of the region which became known as the South. Once this denomination had adopted the name Free Will Baptist and had begun to develop its own identity, they then began to preserve some account of their annual conferences, without which it would be impossible for one to know very much about them, apart from the oral traditions passed on from generation to generation. In the late nineteenth century there appeared two accounts of their history in North Carolina. The first was a summary account of their origin in this state, written by Rufus K. Heam about 1880, and the second consisted of a revised and enlarged version of Heam's account of their beginnings and a more detailed history of their pilgrimage through the nineteenth century, using abstracts of the minutes of the conferences during this period and written by Thad F. Harrison and J. M. Barfield. The latter was published in 1897 and served to inform a later generation of Free Will Baptists concerning their heritage. During the twentieth century more adequate records of this denomination havebeen kept and more attention has been given to preserving such materials, especially during the last few decades. In addition, research has turned up more information on the early period, including the colonial and the English General Baptist background of the denomination. As a result it is possible to give a more comprehensive and more accurate account of the denomina tion's history. For many years the author has had a deep interest in the history of Original Free Will Baptists. That interest, which beganof time the idea that he should undertake to write a history of the denomination began to take root and finally came to fruition following his retirement from the, college. Book Liberty in the Things of God

Download or read book Liberty in the Things of God written by Robert Louis Wilken and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the leading historians of Christianity comes this sweeping reassessment of religious freedom, from the church fathers to John Locke In the ancient world Christian apologists wrote in defense of their right to practice their faith in the cities of the Roman Empire. They argued that religious faith is an inward disposition of the mind and heart and cannot be coerced by external force, laying a foundation on which later generations would build. Chronicling the history of the struggle for religious freedom from the early Christian movement through the seventeenth century, Robert Louis Wilken shows that the origins of religious freedom and liberty of conscience are religious, not political, in origin. They took form before the Enlightenment through the labors of men and women of faith who believed there could be no justice in society without liberty in the things of God. This provocative book, drawing on writings from the early Church as well as the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, reminds us of how “the meditations of the past were fitted to affairs of a later day.”

Book excerpt: First Freedom is an important gathering of messages from a recent conference on religious liberty held at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Editor Jason B. Duesing explains: "The purpose of this collection is, first, to provide an introductory look into the biblical and historical foundations of religious liberty combined with several instances of contemporary expression and defense for the purpose of instruction, edification, and encouragement to all who take the time to read this volume. Second, however, we wish to remind Baptists in the twenty-first century of the price that was paid by their forefathers for the establishment and defense of religious liberty. To be sure, there were people of various religious and denominational preferences that providence used to implement the religious freedoms now enjoyed by all, but for Baptists to overlook the contribution of their own would be a travesty."

Book The History of West Virginia Free Will Baptists

Download or read book The History of West Virginia Free Will Baptists written by Associate Professor of English James H Cox, Dr and published by . This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the West Virginia Free Will Baptists began 145 years ago in the Eastern part of the state near Harpers Ferry, when a Free Will Baptist Church was begun in 1868. By 1873 there was also a Taylor Quarterly Meeting in the northern part of the state which was affiliated with the Ohio River Yearly Meeting. Likewise in July, 1883 of the Kanawha County organized a quarterly meeting with the influence and relationships of some of the brethren in southern Ohio. The Kanawha church was organized in 1879. Since those days they were many quarterly meetings that were started and the West Virginia Yearly Meeting was formed in 1886 with 25 churches and 885 members. Then the merger with the Northern Baptist came in 1911-12, but these did not seem to affect the churches in the Association in the southern part of West Virginia. Later these Free Will Baptists merged with the Tri-State Association of Free Will Baptist which consisted of Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky which was formed in 1919.The present West Virginia State Association was formed in 1945-46. Today there are 21 conferences and 172 churches in the State Association as well as many independent Free Will Baptist churches within the state.
