CHAPTER XV OVEB THREE STATES--AND HOME! AND now comes the day of the great tristate race, a day that was to be tinlike any I had ever lived through before. I was to watch Ovie sail away out of my sight, knowing that he would be far above the clouds for hours and that I could only follow him on the map. More perfect weather for an airplane race could not have been ordered, for no one would have known how to improve it. The sky was deep blue, clear as crystal, with a few light clouds. There was the tang of early September in the air, a hint of the coming fall. Long before noon, the time which had been set for the start, the largest crowd that had ever gathered on the aerodrome at Squantum packed the grand-stand and overflowed into the bleachers. The surrounding country was fairly black with people, and even the harbour was speckled with heavily laden boats. I was told that over in Boston the roofs were covered with men, 158 women, and children, all with eyes turned toward the aviation field. For this was to be the greatest cross-country race ever held in America, and, indeed one of the most notable events in the early history of aviation. The course was from Boston to Nashua, New Hampshire; to Worcester, Massachusetts; to Providence, Rhode Island; then home again to Boston--just a hundred and eighty-six miles as the crow flies. There were two divisions, one for monoplanes and one for biplanes. The prizes totaled seventeen thousand five hundred dollars, the prize for the winning monoplane being ten thousand. There were less than a dozen flyers at the Squantum meet, but among them were Harry Atwood, Tom Sopwith, the reckless daredevil Beachy, who was later killed in California, and Eugene Ely, his pal, also killed shortly afterward during...

Book excerpt: In the spirit of Loving Frank and The Paris Wife, acclaimed novelist Melanie Benjamin pulls back the curtain on the marriage of one of America’s most extraordinary couples: Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. “The history [is] exhilarating. . . . The Aviator’s Wife soars.”—USA Today NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER When Anne Morrow, a shy college senior with hidden literary aspirations, travels to Mexico City to spend Christmas with her family, she meets Colonel Charles Lindbergh, fresh off his celebrated 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic. Enthralled by Charles’s assurance and fame, Anne is certain the aviator has scarcely noticed her. But she is wrong. Charles sees in Anne a kindred spirit, a fellow adventurer, and her world will be changed forever. The two marry in a headline-making wedding. In the years that follow, Anne becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States. But despite this and other major achievements, she is viewed merely as the aviator’s wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life’s infinite possibilities for change and happiness. Book Fathers True

Download or read book Fathers True written by Chuck Mansfield and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-02-23 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the author’s son John suggested he write a book about fatherhood, he thought, with all the books on fatherhood, who needs another? He concluded, “Perhaps I do.” While the book is indeed about fatherhood and fathers, it also tells of other fitting paternal exemplars – father figures – who may not have had children of their own but nonetheless have or had the right stuff as men and mentors. A central tenet herein is that good strong fathers are essential to the character building and moral fiber of our young and the very fabric and future of our currently downward-spiraling society. One reviewer writes, “...the testimonials describing the influence for good one person can have over another, be he parent, son, friend, teacher, comrade, barber, sports coach, or even our children are remarkable. The vignettes sometimes evoke amusement, sometimes tears, but lift the spirit and stay in the memory.”

Book The Wondrous Wife Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Wondrous Wife Classic Reprint written by Charles Marriott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-22 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wondrous Wife If you had been untrue to me because you were madly in love with another woman, she wrote, I believe I could have forgiven you. How do I know you were not? Because, although you foolishly tried to conceal your intrigue from me, you told half a dozen of your friends. Apparently you took quite unnecessary pains that they should know. Why? Because, for you, the real charm of the epi sode - which, if it had not been forced upon my no tice, would have remained an episode - depended on its being known and talked about. I might forgive a wound to my affection, or even to my pride, but I can not continue to live with a man who insults my intelligence. Her conviction that, but for her discovery, her husband's association with Laura Dacre would have been merely an episode was not weakened by his emphatic assertion that he intended to live his own life. She did not lay claim to an extraordinary knowledge of human nature, but she was quite sure that a man only finds it necessary to say that he means to live his own life when he is about to live somebody else's. She refused her husband's offer of an allowance, and as her own private in come was too small to support her in decency, went to live with her only brother, a Bristol solicitor, who was fourteen years older than herself.
