Book An Automated Multimodal Face Recognition System Based on Fusion of Face and Ear

Download or read book An Automated Multimodal Face Recognition System Based on Fusion of Face and Ear written by Lorenzo Luciano and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents an automated system for the detection and recognition of humans using a multimodal approach. Face recognition is a biometric method which has in recent years become more relevant and needed. With heavy research, it is achieving respectable recognition rates and is becoming more mature as a technology. It is even being deployed in certain situations such as with passports and credit cards. Our multimodal biometric system uses both a person's face and ear to improve the recognition rate of individuals. By combining these two biometric systems we are able to achieve significantly improved recognition rates, as compared to using a unimodal biometric system. The system is totally automated, with a trained detection system for face and one for ear. We look at recognition rates for both face and ear, and then at combined recognition rates, and see that we have significant performance gains from the multimodal approach. We also discuss many existing methods of combining biometric input and the recognition rates that each achieves. Experimental results indicate that a multimodal biometric system has higher recognition rates than unimodal systems. This type of automated biometric recognition system can easily be used in installations requiring person identification such as person recognition in mugshots. It can also be used by security agencies and intelligence agencies requiring robust person identification systems.

Book Human Identification Based on Three Dimensional Ear and Face Models

Download or read book Human Identification Based on Three Dimensional Ear and Face Models written by Steven Cadavid and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We propose three biometric systems for performing 1) Multi-modal Three-Dimensional (3D) ear + Two-Dimensional (2D) face recognition, 2) 3D face recognition, and 3) hybrid 3D ear recognition combining local and holistic features. For the 3D ear component of the multi-modal system, uncalibrated video sequences are utilized to recover the 3D ear structure of each subject within a database. For a given subject, a series of frames is extracted from a video sequence and the Region-of-Interest (ROI) in each frame is independently reconstructed in 3D using Shape from Shading (SFS). A fidelity measure is then employed to determine the model that most accurately represents the 3D structure of the subject's ear. Shape matching between a probe and gallery ear model is performed using the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm. For the 2D face component, a set of facial landmarks is extracted from frontal facial images using the Active Shape Model (ASM) technique. Then, the responses of the facial images to a series of Gabor filters at the locations of the facial landmarks are calculated. The Gabor features are stored in the database as the face model for recognition. Match-score level fusion is employed to combine the match scores obtained from both the ear and face modalities. The aim of the proposed system is to demonstrate the superior performance that can be achieved by combining the 3D ear and 2D face modalities over either modality employed independently. For the 3D face recognition system, we employ an Adaboost algorithm to builda classifier based on geodesic distance features. Firstly, a generic face model is finely conformed to each face model contained within a 3D face dataset. Secondly, the geodesic distance between anatomical point pairs are computed across each conformed generic model using the Fast Marching Method. The Adaboost algorithm then generates a strong classifier based on a collection of geodesic distances that are most discriminative for face recognition. The identification and verification performances of three Adaboost algorithms, namely, the original Adaboost algorithm proposed by Freund and Schapire, and two variants -- the Gentle and Modest Adaboost algorithms -- are compared. For the hybrid 3D ear recognition system, we propose a method to combine local and holistic ear surface features in a computationally efficient manner. The system is comprised of four primary components, namely, 1) ear image segmentation, 2) local feature extraction and matching, 3) holistic feature extraction and matching, and 4) a fusion framework combining local and holistic features at the match score level. For the segmentation component, we employ our method proposed in [111], to localize a rectangular region containing the ear. For the local feature extraction and representation component, we extend the Histogram of Categorized Shapes (HCS) feature descriptor, proposed in [111], to an object-centered 3D shape descriptor, termed Surface Patch Histogram of Indexed Shapes (SPHIS), for surface patch representation and matching. For the holistic matching component, we introduce a voxelization scheme for holistic ear representation from which an efficient, element-wise comparison of gallery-probe model pairs can be made. The match scores obtained from both the local and holistic matching components are fused to generate the final match scores. Experimental results conducted on the University of Notre Dame (UND) collection J2 dataset demonstrate that theproposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art 3D ear biometric systems in both accuracy and efficiency.

Book Face Recognition Using Three Dimensional and Multimodal Images

Download or read book Face Recognition Using Three Dimensional and Multimodal Images written by Claudio Cusano and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great attention received by face recognition is motivated not only by the fundamental challenges posed by the problem, but also by numerous practical applications. Although current automatic recognition systems have reached a certain level of reliability, their success is limited by the conditions imposed by many practical applications. The recent improvements in three-dimensional acquisition devices allows the implementation of three-dimensional face recognition systems. Some devices incorporate a color digital camera that allows the acquisition of multimodal 2D+3D images, which can be exploited to design more reliable systems. This work investigates face recognition strategies based on the analysis of three-dimensional and multimodal images. The topics addressed include 3D face face detection and normalization, geometric features, information fusion strategies and recognition of partially occluded faces.

Book A Multi modal Approach for Face Modeling and Recognition

Download or read book A Multi modal Approach for Face Modeling and Recognition written by Mohammad Hossein Mahoor and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes a new methodology for multi-modal (2-D + 3-D) face modeling and recognition. There are advantages in using each modality for face recognition. For example, the problems of pose variation and illumination condition, which cannot be resolved easily by using the 2-D data, can be handled by using the 3-D data. However, texture, which is provided by 2-D data, is an important cue that cannot be ignored. Therefore, we use both the 2-D and 3-D modalities for face recognition and fuse the results of face recognition by each modality to boost the overall performance of the system. In this dissertation, we consider two different cases for multi-modal face modeling and recognition. In the first case, the 2-D and 3-D data are registered. In this case we develop a unified graph model called Attributed Relational Graph (ARG) for face modeling and recognition. Based on the ARG model, the 2-D and 3-D data are included in a single model. The developed ARG model consists of nodes, edges, and mutual relations. The nodes of the graph correspond to the landmark points that are extracted by an improved Active Shape Model (ASM) technique. In order to extract the facial landmarks robustly, we improve the Active Shape Model technique by using the color information. Then, at each node of the graph, we calculate the response of a set of log-Gabor filters applied to the facial image texture and shape information (depth values); these features are used to model the local structure of the face at each node of the graph. The edges of the graph are defined based on Delaunay triangulation and a set of mutual relations between the sides of the triangles are defined. The mutual relations boost the final performance of the system. The results of face matching using the 2-D and 3-D attributes and the mutual relations are fused at the score level. In the second case, the 2-D and 3-D data are not registered. This lack of registration could be due to different reasons such as time lapse between the data acquisitions. Therefore, the 2-D and 3-D modalities are modeled independently. For the 3-D modality, we developed a fully automated system for 3-D face modeling and recognition based on ridge images. The problem with shape matching approaches such as Iterative Closest Points (ICP) or Hausdorff distance is the computational complexity. We model the face by 3-D binary ridge images and use them for matching. In order to match the ridge points (either using the ICP or the Hausdorff distance), we extract three facial landmark points: namely, the two inner corners of the eyes and the tip of the nose, on the face surface using the Gaussian curvature. These three points are used for initial alignment of the constructed ridge images. As a result of using ridge points, which are just a fraction of the total points on the surface of the face, the computational complexity of the matching is reduced by two orders of magnitude. For the 2-D modality, we model the face using an Attributed Relational Graph. The results of the 2-D and 3-D matching are fused at the score level. There are various techniques to fuse the 2-D and 3-D modalities. In this dissertation, we fuse the matching results at the score level to enhance the overall performance of our face recognition system. We compare the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence and the weighted sum rule for fusion. We evaluate the performance of the above techniques for multi-modal face recognition on various databases such as Gavab range database, FRGC (Face Recognition Grand Challenge) V2.0, and the University of Miami face database.
