Book Three Dimensional Aero Structural Shape Optimization of Turbomachinery Blades

Download or read book Three Dimensional Aero Structural Shape Optimization of Turbomachinery Blades written by Vadivel Kumaran Sivashanmugam and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aero-structural optimization of gas turbine blades is a very challenging task, given e.g. three dimensional nature of the flow, stringent performance requirements, structural and manufacturing considerations, etc. The current research work addresses this challenge by development and implementation of structural shape optimization module and integrating it with an aerodynamic shape optimization module to form an automated aero-structural optimization procedure. The optimizer combines a Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA), with a Response Surface Approximation (RSA) of the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) type. During the optimization process, each objective function and constraint is approximated by an individual ANN, which is trained and tested using an aerodynamic as well as a structure database composed of a few high fidelity flow simulations (CFD) and structure analysis (CSD) that are obtained using ANSYS Workbench 11.0. Addition of this multiple ANN technique to the optimizer greatly improves the accuracy of the RSA, provides control over handling different design variables and disciplines. The described methodology is then applied to the aero-structural optimization of the E/TU-3 turbine blade row and stage at design conditions to improve the aerodynamic and structural performance of the turbomachinery blades by optimizing the stacking curve. The proposed methodology proved quite successful, flexible and practical with significant increase in stage efficiency and decrease in equivalent stress.

Download or read book Evolutionary Optimization and Game Strategies for Advanced Multi Disciplinary Design written by Jacques Periaux and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many complex aeronautical design problems can be formulated with efficient multi-objective evolutionary optimization methods and game strategies. This book describes the role of advanced innovative evolution tools in the solution, or the set of solutions of single or multi disciplinary optimization. These tools use the concept of multi-population, asynchronous parallelization and hierarchical topology which allows different models including precise, intermediate and approximate models with each node belonging to the different hierarchical layer handled by a different Evolutionary Algorithm. The efficiency of evolutionary algorithms for both single and multi-objective optimization problems are significantly improved by the coupling of EAs with games and in particular by a new dynamic methodology named “Hybridized Nash-Pareto games”. Multi objective Optimization techniques and robust design problems taking into account uncertainties are introduced and explained in detail. Several applications dealing with civil aircraft and UAV, UCAV systems are implemented numerically and discussed. Applications of increasing optimization complexity are presented as well as two hands-on test cases problems. These examples focus on aeronautical applications and will be useful to the practitioner in the laboratory or in industrial design environments. The evolutionary methods coupled with games presented in this volume can be applied to other areas including surface and marine transport, structures, biomedical engineering, renewable energy and environmental problems. This book will be of interest to students, young scientists and engineers involved in the field of multi physics optimization.

Book An Approach for Aerodynamic Optimization of Transonic Fan Blades

Download or read book An Approach for Aerodynamic Optimization of Transonic Fan Blades written by Maryam Khelghatibana and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamic design optimization of transonic fan blades is a highly challenging problem due to the complexity of flow field inside the fan, the conflicting design requirements and the high-dimensional design space. In order to address all these challenges, an aerodynamic design optimization method is developed in this study. This method automates the design process by integrating a geometrical parameterization method, a CFD solver and numerical optimization methods that can be applied to both single and multi-point optimization design problems. A multi-level blade parameterization is employed to modify the blade geometry. Numerical analyses are performed by solving 3D RANS equations combined with SST turbulence model. Genetic algorithms and hybrid optimization methods are applied to solve the optimization problem. In order to verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the optimization method, a singlepoint optimization problem aiming to maximize design efficiency is formulated and applied to redesign a test case. However, transonic fan blade design is inherently a multi-faceted problem that deals with several objectives such as efficiency, stall margin, and choke margin. The proposed multi-point optimization method in the current study is formulated as a bi-objective problem to maximize design and near-stall efficiencies while maintaining the required design pressure ratio. Enhancing these objectives significantly deteriorate the choke margin, specifically at high rotational speeds. Therefore, another constraint is embedded in the optimization problem in order to prevent the reduction of choke margin at high speeds. Since capturing stall inception is numerically very expensive, stall margin has not been considered as an objective in the problem statement. However, improving near-stall efficiency results in a better performance at stall condition, which could enhance the stall margin. An investigation is therefore performed on the Pareto-optimal solutions to demonstrate the relation between near-stall efficiency and stall margin.

Book Simulation driven Aerodynamic Design Using Variable fidelity Models

Download or read book Simulation driven Aerodynamic Design Using Variable fidelity Models written by Leifur Leifsson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer simulations is a fundamental tool of the design process in many engineering disciplines including aerospace engineering. However, although high-fidelity numerical models are accurate, they can be computationally expensive with evaluation time for a single design as long as hours, days or even weeks. Simulation-driven design using conventional optimization techniques may be therefore prohibitive. This book explores the alternative: performing computationally efficient design using surrogate-based optimization, where the high-fidelity model is replaced by its computationally cheap but still reasonably accurate representation: a surrogate. The emphasis is on physics-based surrogates. Application-wise, the focus is on aerodynamics and the methods and techniques described in the book are demonstrated using aerodynamic shape optimization cases. Applications in other engineering fields are also demonstrated.State-of-the-art techniques and a depth of coverage never published before make this a unique and essential book for all researchers working in aerospace and other engineering areas and dealing with optimization, computationally expensive design problems, and simulation-driven design.

Book Application of Surrogate based Global Optimization to Aerodynamic Design

Download or read book Application of Surrogate based Global Optimization to Aerodynamic Design written by Emiliano Iuliano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamic design, like many other engineering applications, is increasingly relying on computational power. The growing need for multi-disciplinarity and high fidelity in design optimization for industrial applications requires a huge number of repeated simulations in order to find an optimal design candidate. The main drawback is that each simulation can be computationally expensive – this becomes an even bigger issue when used within parametric studies, automated search or optimization loops, which typically may require thousands of analysis evaluations. The core issue of a design-optimization problem is the search process involved. However, when facing complex problems, the high-dimensionality of the design space and the high-multi-modality of the target functions cannot be tackled with standard techniques. In recent years, global optimization using meta-models has been widely applied to design exploration in order to rapidly investigate the design space and find sub-optimal solutions. Indeed, surrogate and reduced-order models can provide a valuable alternative at a much lower computational cost. In this context, this volume offers advanced surrogate modeling applications and optimization techniques featuring reasonable computational resources. It also discusses basic theory concepts and their application to aerodynamic design cases. It is aimed at researchers and engineers who deal with complex aerodynamic design problems on a daily basis and employ expensive simulations to solve them.

Book Aerothermal Analysis Automation for Preliminary Axial Compressor Airfoil Geometry Generation

Download or read book Aerothermal Analysis Automation for Preliminary Axial Compressor Airfoil Geometry Generation written by Tomas Diaz Jimenez and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Automated analysis and design are increasingly becoming a necessity in the domain of aeroderivative gas turbines. This work focuses on automation aimed at axial compressor aerodynamic design. An automation framework is developed for rapid generation of preliminary axial compressor airfoil geometry from throughflow aerodynamics results specific to Siemens Energy analysis tools and practices. The framework handles real and general designs with as many blade-rows as necessary and enables a simplified link to numerical optimization tools. The automation covers a common aero-thermal workflow which incorporates auto-blading, stacking, blade to blade analysis, and 3D CFD evaluation for a general multi-row component. It allows for an analyst to create new rotor or stator geometries from scratch by supplying a solved throughflow model or to retrofit and optimize existing geometries for new designs. The framework makes use of a compartmentalized object-oriented structure to maintain its general applicability to new models within the compatible suites. Three semi-automated stand-alone executable processes are created allowing for specific user input at certain stages of the workflow through custom developed, fully by-passable, graphical user interfaces to ensure ease of use. Integration of the codes into two possible existing multidisciplinary automation platforms is discussed and assessed. In addition, the automation and its suitability for use in design exploration and optimization for multi-row airfoil geometry creation is tested through four case studies where blades are re-designed for different components. Case study results demonstrate significant time savings when compared to current manual execution of the workflow in addition to tangible design improvements enabled by the use of existing, but under-utilized, numerical optimization tools"--
