Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Ewing Ritchie (1820-98) was an English journalist and writer, some of whose works appeared under the pseudonym of Christopher Crayon. He was born in Wrentham, Suffolk, the son of congregational minister Andrew Ritchie. After attending Uiversity College, London, he began a career in journalism and over time edited and owned several periodicals including The Principality and The Illustrated News of the World, later making a successful application to the Royal Literary Fund after losing money on some of his periodical ventures. In addition to his journalism, Ritchie was a prolific author, specializing in biography, history, travel books and memoir. His only novel was Crying for the Light (1895), the tale of a country girl pursued by an evil baronet who is rescued by an honest journalist. The subjects of his biographies include Richard Cobden, David Livingstone, and William Ewart Gladstone, and amongst his travel books are works on Canada, South Africa, and Australia. He also wrote a number of books giving an insight into London in the 19th century. This record of his trip to Australia was first published in 1890.
