Book Estimates of Some Vital Statistics of Northern Pike Walleye and Sauger Populations in Lake Sharpe South Dakota

Download or read book Estimates of Some Vital Statistics of Northern Pike Walleye and Sauger Populations in Lake Sharpe South Dakota written by Joseph H. Elrod and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catch-effort data derived from gill net samples were used to estimate relative abundance, age composition, sex ratio, growth rate, survival rate, and relative year-class strength of northern pike, walleye, and sauger populations in Lake Sharpe, Missouri, S.D., during the first three years of impoundment (1964-1966.). Catches were generally highest in Oahe Dam tailwaters. Females were more numerous and larger at most ages than males.

Book Changes in the Fish Population in Lake Francis Case in South Dakota in the First 16 Years of Impoundment

Download or read book Changes in the Fish Population in Lake Francis Case in South Dakota in the First 16 Years of Impoundment written by Charles R. Gasaway and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total number of adult fish in Lake Frances Case, a main steam Missouri River Reservoir, has declined since impoundment in 1952. Goldeye, channel catfish, and northern redhorse have probably remained the same; emerald shiner, white bass, walleye, and possibly flathead catfish have increased. The sauger population began to decline at about the time walleye numbers increased. Some species formerly present have become rare. Forage species in the reservoir were gizzard shad, emerald shiner, and yellow perch, but these were not present in large enough numbers to provide an abundant forage fish population.

Book Wetland and Riparian Areas of the Intermountain West

Download or read book Wetland and Riparian Areas of the Intermountain West written by Mark C. McKinstry and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands and riparian areas between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada are incredibly diverse and valuable habitats. More than 80 percent of the wildlife species in this intermountain region depend on these wetlands—which account for less than 2 percent of the land area—for their survival. At the same time, the wetlands also serve the water needs of ranchers and farmers, recreationists, vacation communities, and cities. It is no exaggeration to call water the “liquid gold” of the West, and the burgeoning human demands on this scarce resource make it imperative to understand and properly manage the wetlands and riverine areas of the Intermountain West. This book offers land managers, biologists, and research scientists a state-of-the-art survey of the ecology and management practices of wetland and riparian areas in the Intermountain West. Twelve articles examine such diverse issues as laws and regulations affecting these habitats, the unique physiographic features of the region, the importance of wetlands and riparian areas to fish, wildlife, and livestock, the ecological function of these areas, their value to humans, and the methods to evaluate these habitats. The authors also address the human impacts on the land from urban and suburban development, mining, grazing, energy extraction, recreation, water diversions, and timber harvesting and suggest ways to mitigate such impacts. In addition to the editors, the contributors to this volume are:Paul Adamus, Oregon State University, CorvallisMichael A. Book Biology of the Northern Pike in Oahe Reservoir 1959 Through 1965

Download or read book Biology of the Northern Pike in Oahe Reservoir 1959 Through 1965 written by Thomas J. Hassler and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variations in length, weight, and maturity of northern pike in Oahe Reservoir were associated with sex and year class. Females were larger and more numerous than males. Catches were dominated by the 1959 and 1962 year classes; the 1964 year class was missing. Annulus formation began in April and was completed by July. SInce impoundment, large year classes have been associated with a rise in water level above previous high levels in spring and continuation of the higher level though early summer.
