Book An Anthology of Legends and Poems of Armenia

Download or read book An Anthology of Legends and Poems of Armenia written by Zabelle C. Boyajian and published by Indoeuropeanpublishing.com. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tile is a translation of selected Armenian poems and legends. Included in those are a number of episodes from the chronicles of Moses of Khorene, a fifth century Armenian historian, which recount legendary incidents of ancient Armenian history. The book concludes with a long essay by Aram Raffi, which contextualizes the long history of Armenian literature. The essay also details the long religious history of Armenia, starting with an extended discussion of the ancient Pagan deities. Armenia is in a region which is a cross-road between Asia and Europe, and has more often than not been conquered by the dominant regional power of the day, starting with the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Macedonians, through the Ottomans and finally the Russians. Nevertheless, Armenia has managed to hold onto a unique cultural and linguistic identity. Armenians have produced a substantial literature. Unfortunately, not much of this has been translated into English. This anthology is one of the few Translations of Armenian literature, pertaining to legends and poems of Armenia, particularly that of the pagan era.

Book Armenian Legends and Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Armenian Legends and Poems Classic Reprint written by Zabelle C. Boyajian and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Armenian Legends and Poems In preparing this book of Armenian Legends and Poems my principal object was to publish it as a Memorial to an unhappy nation. The book does not claim to represent Armenian poetry adequately. Many gifted and well-known authors have been omitted, partly from considerations of space, and partly because of the scope of the work. For instance, I should have liked to include some of the Sharakans (rows of gems) of Nerses Shnorhali; but the impossibility of reproducing their characteristic forms in another language, and doing them any justice, made me decide not to translate any of them. I have only given a few typical legends and poems, endeavouring, as far as possible, to convey the local colouring by adhering closely to the form, rhythm, and imagery of the originals in my translations. I have also largely based the decorative scheme of the illustrations upon Ancient Armenian Art as we see it in mediaeval missals and illuminations. Should this anthology create an interest in Armenian literature the Armenian Muses have still many treasures in their keeping which cannot be destroyed; and another volume could be compiled. In conclusion, I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to Miss Alice Stone Blackwell, of Boston, U.S.A. - one of Armenia's truest friends - for allowing me to reprint several of her renderings of Armenian poems; to G. C. Macaulay, M.A., and the Delegates of the Oxford University Press, for permission to reprint the "Tale of Rosiphelee" from their edition of Gower's Confessio Amantis; to Mr. William Watson and Mr. John Lane for permission to reprint the sonnet on Armenia, "A Trial of Orthodoxy," from The Purple East; and to the heirs of Vittoria Aganoor Pompilj for permitting me to reprint two of her poems, "Pasqua Armena" and "Io Vidi," from the Nuova Antologia, I wish also to thank Mr. M. E. Galoustiantz for designing the cover of this book. The proceeds of the present edition will be handed over to the Armenian Fund. Book AN ARMENIAN LEGEND AND AN ARMENIAN POEM

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 40 ÿ In Issue 40 of the Baba Indaba Children's Stories, Baba Indaba narrates the Armenian legend of ARTASHES AND SATENIK and a famous battle between the Alans and the Armenians which had an altogether more peaceful outcome. He also recites the Armenian poem, THE TEARS OF THE ARAXES, a famous poem about the Araxes river and how it weeps tears for the lost people of Armenia. ÿ This issue also has a "Where in the World - Look it Up" section, where young readers are challenged to look up a place on a map somewhere in the world. The place, town or city is relevant to the story, on map. HINT - use Google maps. ÿ Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Baba Indaba translates as "Father of Stories". ÿ It is believed that folklore and tales are believed to have originated in India and made their way overland along the Silk and Spice routes and through Central Asia before arriving in Europe. Even so, this does not cover all folklore from all four corners of the world. Indeed folklore, legends and myths from Africa, Australia, Polynesia, and some from Asia too, are altogether quite different and seem to have originated on the whole from separate reservoirs of lore, legend and culture.

Book ARMENIAN LEGENDS 7 Ancient Armenian legends

Download or read book ARMENIAN LEGENDS 7 Ancient Armenian legends written by Anon E. Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book containing 7 Armenian legends is the result of a study conducted by Louis A. Boettiger which have been selected from a larger mass of material. Of particular interest is the Legend of Haik or Hayk. In the account by Moses of Chorene, Hayk emigrated from Babylon to the region near Mount Ararat after Titanid Bel made himself king over all. Considering this occurred in circa 2500BC and that Hayk had an extended household of over 300, moving his hosehold a distance of 1,160km/720 miles is a significant undertaking. However, Titanid Bel did not like this snub and after refusing to return, sent an army to recapture or kill Hayk. The two armies, if Hayk’s force can be called an army, met on the shores of Lake Van. During the battle Hayk slew Bel with a nearly impossible shot using a long bow, sending the king's forces into disarray. Hayk named the site of the battle Hayots Dzor in current day Turkey. It is out of this victory that the nation of Armenia was born. Herein you will find the legends of: The Legend Of Haic, or Hayk, The Legend Of Ara And Semiramis, The Legend Of Vahakn, Legends Of Artasches And Artavasd, Legends Of The Conversion To Christianity, Legends Of Abgar, Thaddeus, And St. Bartholomew Legends Of Rhipsime And Gregory Also included is information on the localities of the legends, in particular - Ararat, Khor-Virap and Erzerum which has enable Boettiger to place each legend in the setting from which it originated. ============= TAGS: Armenia, folklore, legends, myths, Haic, Hayk, Ara And Semiramis, Vahakn, King, Artasches, Artavasd, Conversion To Christianity, Abgar, Thaddeus, St. Bartholomew, Rhipsime, Gregory, Titanid Bel, Lake Van, Mount Ararat, Moses of Chorene, Haykashen, Haykashen, Battle of Giants, Navasard, Julamerk, Dastakert, Gerezmank, martyr, Haykaberd, Haykashen, Taron
