Book Handbook of British Romanticism

Download or read book Handbook of British Romanticism written by Ralf Haekel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of British Romanticism is a state of the art investigation of Romantic literature and theory, a field that probably changed more quickly and more fundamentally than any other traditional era in literary studies. Since the early 1980s, Romantic studies has widened its scope significantly: The canon has been expanded, hitherto ignored genres have been investigated and new topics of research explored. After these profound changes, intensified by the general crisis of literary theory since the turn of the millennium, traditional concepts such as subjectivity, imagination and the creative genius have lost their status as paradigms defining Romanticism. The handbook will feature discussions of key concepts such as history, class, gender, science and the use of media as well as a thorough account of the most central literary genres around the turn of the 19th century. The focus of the book, however, will lie on a discussion of key literary texts in the light of the most recent theoretical developments. Thus, the Handbook of British Romanticism will provide students with an introduction to Romantic literature in general and literary scholars with a discussion of innovative and groundbreaking theoretical developments.

Book The Decade of the United Irishmen

Book excerpt: "Drawing together contemporary newspaper articles, letters and reports, John Killen brings alive the decade of the United Irishmen: the formation of the Society; the years of secret planning; the abortive 1798 rebellion and its brutal suppression; and the far-reaching constitutional consequences. By relying on primary sources, and not the belated wisdom of hindsight, he draws the reader into the hope, drama and ultimate tragedy of a period that still has profound resonances in modern Ireland. --Back cover.

Book excerpt: For Ireland the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were an era marked by war, economic transformation, and the making and remaking of identities. By the 1630s the era of wars of conquest seemed firmly in the past. But the British civil wars of the mid-seventeenth century fractured both Protestant and Catholic Ireland along lines defined by different combinations of religious and political allegiance. Later, after 1688, Ireland became the battlefield for what was otherwise Britain's bloodless (and so Glorious) Revolution. The eighteenth century, by contrast, was a period of peace, permitting Ireland to emerge, first as a dynamic actor in the growing Atlantic economy, then as the breadbasket for industrialising Britain. But at the end of the century, against a background of international revolution, new forms of religious and political conflict came together to produce another period of multi-sided conflict. The Act of Union, hastily introduced in the aftermath of civil war, ensured that Ireland entered the nineteenth century still divided, but no longer a kingdom.

Book excerpt: Ireland's History provides an introduction to Irish history that blends a scholarly approach to the subject, based on recent research and current historiographical perspectives, with a clear and accessible writing style. All the major themes in Irish history are covered, from prehistoric times right through to present day, from the emergence of Celtic Christianity after the fall of the Roman Empire, to Ireland and the European Union, secularism and rapprochement with the United Kingdom. By avoiding adopting a purely nationalistic perspective, Kenneth Campbell offers a balanced approach, covering not only social and economic history, but also political, cultural, and religious history, and exploring the interconnections among these various approaches. This text will encourage students to think critically about the past and to examine how a study of Irish history might inform and influence their understanding of history in general.

Book A History of Irish Women s Poetry

Download or read book A History of Irish Women s Poetry written by Ailbhe Darcy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Irish Women's Poetry is a ground-breaking and comprehensive account of Irish women's poetry from earliest times to the present day. It reads Irish women's poetry through many prisms – mythology, gender, history, the nation – and most importantly, close readings of the poetry itself. It covers major figures, such as Máire Mhac an tSaoi, Eavan Boland, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, as well as neglected figures from the past. Writing in both English and Irish is considered, and close attention paid to the many different contexts in which Irish women's poetry has been produced and received, from the anonymous work of the early medieval period, through the bardic age, the coterie poets of Anglo-Ireland, the nationalist balladeers of Young Ireland, the Irish Literary Revival, and the advent of modernity. As capacious as it is diverse, this book is an essential contribution to scholarship in the field.

Book Wolfe Tone

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theobald Wolfe Tone (1763–98) was one of the founders of the Irish Republican national movement, and his political ideas and the circumstances of his life and early death have become powerful political weapons in the hands of later nationalists. Today his name still arouses strong emotions, and he is hailed as the first prophet of an independent Ireland. Tracing Tone's life from his upbringing as a member of the Protestant elite to his exile, trial, and suicide, this new edition of the awardwinning biography brings the book up to date with new scholarship and fresh historical insights.
