In those days cowboys didn't know they were picturesque, horse rustlers were to be handled as seemed best on the occasion, and young ladies thought nothing of punching cows and hunting grizzlies in between school terms.

Download or read book Thinking About America s Defense written by Glenn A. Kent and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2008-10-09 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lieutenant General Glenn A. Kent was a uniquely acute analyst and developer of American defense policy in the second half of the twentieth century. His 33-year career in the Air Force was followed by more than 20 years as one of the leading analysts at RAND. This volume is not a memoir in the normal sense but rather a summary of the dozens of national security issues in which Glenn was personally engaged over the course of his career. These issues included creating the single integrated operational plan (SIOP), leading DoD's official assessment of strategic defenses in the 1960s, developing and analyzing strategic nuclear arms control agreements, helping to bring new weapon systems to life, and many others. Each vignette describes the analytical frameworks and, where appropriate, the mathematical formulas and charts that Glenn developed and applied to gain insights into the issue at hand. The author also relates his roles in much of the bureaucratic pulling and hauling that occurred as issues were addressed within the government.

Download or read book Mimbres Life and Society written by Patricia A. Gilman and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thousand years ago, village farmers in the Mimbres Valley of what is now southwestern New Mexico created stunning black-on-white pottery. Mimbres pottery has added a fascinating dimension to southwestern archaeology, but it has also led to the partial or total destruction of most Mimbres sites. The Mimbres Foundation, in one of the few modern investigations of a Mimbres pueblo, excavated the Mattocks site, containing about 180 surface rooms in addition to pit structures. Mimbres Life and Society details the Mattocks site’s architecture and artifacts, and it includes 160 figures, showing more than 400 photographs of painted vessels from the site. Mimbres pueblos, as early examples of people using surface room blocks, are ideal for investigating questions about how and why people moved from earlier subterranean pit structures to aboveground room blocks. The authors consider the number of households living at the site before and after the transition, as well as the lack of evidence for subsistence intensification and population growth as causes of this transition. These analyses suggest that each room block on the site housed a single family as opposed to multiple families, the more common interpretation. There were not necessarily more households on the site during the Classic period than earlier. Patricia A. Gilman and Steven A. LeBlanc spent five seasons excavating at the Mattocks site and many more analyzing and writing about Mattocks site data. They note that subtle social differences among people were at play, and they emphasize that the Mattocks site may be unique among Mimbres pueblos in many aspects. Mimbres Life and Society reveals broad-ranging implications for southwestern archaeologists and anyone interested in understanding the ancient Southwest and early village societies.
Download or read book The Star Lake Archaeological Project written by Walter K. Wait and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These fifteen essays inventory and evaluate the cultural resources discovered at the Star Lake Archaeological Research Project in northwestern New Mexico. Commissioned by the Peabody Coal Company to evaluate resources in a strip-mining area, the project turned up remains from the preceramic, Anasazi, and historic periods. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which provides background, with essays by Walter Wait and Neal Lopinot. Part two presents chapters by Wait, Joseph K. Anderson, and Terry J. Powell. Part three contains five chapters dealing with the Anasazi period written by Wait, Terry Klein, Anna Pauline Fondaw, David Barde, and Fred York. This book is designed as a text in courses dealing with contract archaeology, with the application of archaeological method and theory, and with archaeological field techniques. The essays show archaeologists applying some of the newest methods and theoretical techniques, not in an academic setting, but on the job where they worked as archaeologists. In Wait’s terms the book utters a challenge: “Be imaginative, be creative, be archaeologists.”
