Download or read book Integrating Archaeology and Ethnohistory written by Christophe Descantes and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining archaeological and ethnohistorical evidence from the islands of Yap and Ulithi, two islands in the Western Caroline Islands, this study reveals a history of more than 1300 years of interaction between the island populations. Drawing on ceramic evidence in particular, Descantes traces the history of this extensive Micronesian exchange system, examining factors such as population pressure, resource limitations and history in the growth and intensification of exchange. Descantes also considers the impact of European contact, although the main focus is on the years prior to this, and sets the evidence within the context of wider Pacific island exchange models.
Download or read book Pacific Island Heritage written by Jolie Liston and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume emerges from a ground-breaking conference held in the Republic of Palau on cultural heritage in the Pacific. It includes bold investigations of the role of cultural heritage in identity-making, and the ways in which community engagement informs heritage management practices. This is the first broad and detailed investigation of the unique and irreplaceable cultural heritage of the Pacific from a heritage management perspective. It identifies new trends in research and assesses relationships between archaeologists, heritage managers and local communities. The methods which emerge from these relationships will be critical to the effective management of heritage sites in the 21st century. A wonderful book which emerges from an extraordinary conference. Essential reading for cultural heritage managers, archaeologists and others with an interest in caring for the unique cultural heritage of the Pacific Islands".

Download or read book Island Societies written by Patrick Vinton Kirch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986-10-09 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrating their attention on the Pacific Islands, the contributors to this book show how the tightly focused social and economic systems of islands offer archaeologists a series of unique opportunities for tracking and explaining prehistoric change. From the 1950s onwards, excavations in such islands as Fiji, Palau and Hawaii revolutionised Oceanic archaeology and, as the major problems of cultural origins and island sequences were resolves, archaeologists came increasingly to study social change and to integrate newly acquired data on material culture with older ethnographic and ethnohistorical materials. The fascinating results of this work, centring on the evolution of complex Oceanic chiefdoms into something very much like classic 'archaic states', are authoritatively surveyed here.

This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 951 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth in a series that documents architectural conservation in different parts of the world, Architectural Conservation in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands: National Experiences and Practice addresses cultural heritage protection in a region which comprises one third of the Earth’s surface. In response to local needs, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands have developed some of the most important and influential techniques, legislation, doctrine and theories in cultural heritage management in the world. The evolution of the heritage protection ethos and contemporary architectural conservation practices in Australia and Oceania are discussed on a national and regional basis using ample illustrations and examples. Accomplishments in architectural conservation are discussed in their national and international contexts, with an emphasis on original developments (solutions) and contributions made to the overall field. Enriched with essays contributed from fifty-nine specialists and thought leaders in the field, this book contains an extraordinary breadth and depth of research and synthesis on the why’s and how’s of cultural heritage conservation. Its holistic approach provides an essential resource and reference for students, academics, researchers, policy makers, practitioners and all who are interested in conserving the built environment.
