Book An Analysis of the International Diamond Market

Download or read book An Analysis of the International Diamond Market written by Donna J. Bergenstock and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores one particular threat faced by the diamond industry and De Beers during the early 1990s: the release or leakage of rough (uncut and unpolished) diamonds on the open market by the Russian Federation in violation of their sales agreement with De Beers. Of particular interest is the discussion of how a devastating currency crisis and government budget deficit drove the Russians to leak diamonds, along with the disclosure of the secretive, duplicitous manner in which rough stones were leaked. A secondary issue addressed concerns the promotional efforts undertaken by De Beers and their marketing and distribution subsidiary, the Central Selling Organization (CSO), recently renamed the Diamond Trading Company (DTC), to increase worldwide demand by influencing consumer perceptions and buying behavior.

Book Diamonds Pricing and Ethical Issues Surrounding Diamonds

Download or read book Diamonds Pricing and Ethical Issues Surrounding Diamonds written by Caroline Mutuku and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Economic and Social History, grade: 1, , language: English, abstract: Diamonds are believed to be among the most precious commodities for trade. In the past three centuries, diamond has been considered to be one of the rarest mineral elements in the earth’s crust. However, the immense demand for diamond by the global population appears to be the most probable reason as to why diamonds have always been considered as a scarce trade commodity. Interestingly, geological findings indicate that diamonds top the list of the most abundant gem-quality colored stones. It is argued that diamond pricing is the most outstanding feature which creates unusual demand; thus, making diamonds rare. The second reason why diamonds have been considered to be scarce is the nature of the market structure. Over the years, diamond market has been characterized with an unprecedented monopoly in which a single player existed in the market. As a result, diamond pricing and its supply experienced unique market trends, and this is the principal reason as to why diamond supply chain has been manipulated to create market demand against business ethics. The De Beers Company has been exercising monopoly since its establishment in 1880s when Cecil Rhodes started diamond trading. Despite the legal barriers including the U.S anti-trust laws, this company has always exercised monopoly in diamond trading. However, monopoly in the diamond market seems to end soon because its supply will increase significantly after Russia joins the market. Recently, a huge diamond field was discovered in Siberia which can supply the world market with trillion of carats in the next thirty centuries. As a result, the structure of the diamond market is believed to change drastically in the future. Therefore, this research paper will provide an overview of diamond trading, especially with regard to the principal elements of diamond pricing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The academic study of diamonds is as multi-faceted as the precious stones themselves. Mineralogists and geographers have written about them, as have historians and economists and students of art and fashion. They each shine their light on a different aspect of this source of luminous radiance. But who would venture to describe the entire complicated worldwide system starting in the diamond mines and ending with the consumers of Western metropolises? In The Mazzel Ritual: Culture, Customs and Crime in the Diamond Trade, Russian-Israeli cultural anthropologist and criminologist Dina Siegel follows the route of a diamond from the mines of Africa to the shops of Europe and the United States, as it passes through countless hands and places and is smuggled, stolen, cut, polished, sold, exchanged and, finally, worn as jewelry. In the course of this long and exciting journey, a wide range of people face all sorts of risks and criminality, as well as various moral and ethical judgments. Siegel describes the range of ethnic groups that are active in the diamond trade and the culture and customs that are specific to this business. She analyses the dangers and threats to the industry and aims to uncover the strategies and tactics to deal with them. Finally, this story of risk, trust and crime examines the vulnerability of diamond production and distribution to illicit and criminal activities. This book is about the diamond business itself as well as about those involved in it. It tells the story of people who simply cannot stay away from this expensive and alluring commodity.

Book Diamonds and Conflict

Download or read book Diamonds and Conflict written by Arthur V. Levy and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mining and sales of diamonds by parties to participants of armed conflicts, notably in Africa, are regarded as a significant factor fuelling such hostilities. These diamonds, labelled 'conflict diamonds', make up an estimated 3.7 per cent to 15 per cent of the value of the global diamond trade. In response to public pressure to halt the trade of conflict diamonds and due to the persistence of diamond-related conflicts, governments and multi-lateral organisations have taken diplomatic action to combat the trade. Several international policy making forums, including the UN, have addressed the problem, and the international diamond industry and non-governmental organisations have proposed a range of reforms and legislative initiatives to halt the illicit trade. This new book examines the diamond-related African conflicts, the various methods that are being researched and used to 'tag' diamonds with microscopic markings, and the efforts taken to regulate the marketing and exporting of diamonds.

Book Diamonds a Study of the Factors That Govern Their Value

Download or read book Diamonds a Study of the Factors That Govern Their Value written by Frank B. Wade and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword. IN writing this little monograph on factors that govern the value of diamonds the author has attempted to put, within limits not too wide to be covered by the busy diamond merchant, much of the experience he has gained during the past fifteen years, as a student of diamonds. Some of the information contained in this volume is the common property of all who have given attention to the subject. Part of it is to be found already in print, in larger and more pretentious works. A modest portion of the material is the result of original study at first hand, especially such part as attempts to analyse various effects and to determine and explain their causes. While most of the technical information contained in the following chapters might be learned of men who are now in the business, many such have no time or taste for writing down what they have learned, and others, unfortunately, regard some of these matters as trade secrets to be kept from the buying public. The writer therefore feels that there is a place for such an essay, and hopes that many who are serving their apprenticeship in the jewelry business and perhaps a few who are already recognized as diamond merchants may profit by the close study of this handbook. In preparing these pages, the author has also had the great American diamond-buying public in mind and has even given over a short chapter to advice to the intending buyer of a diamond. No other people buy diamonds so largely as Americans. They buy the best and are usually at pains to inform themselves more thoroughly than other nationalities as to the points that determine the value of diamonds. There is nothing within the pages of this book which a merchant who is conducting an honest business in diamonds need fear to have become the property of the public. The more discerning and intelligent the buying public becomes, the better customer it will be, in the long run. In conclusion, the author would extend his thanks to the many jewelers and diamond men who have courteously extended to him opportunities to study diamonds at first hand. Most of the jewelers of Indianapolis should be included and, in addition, the author wishes gratefully to acknowledge much assistance from Mr. Edward E. Stone and Mr. John O'Hanion of Boston and Mr. John H. Baker of New York. The admirable treatise on diamonds by W. R. Cattelle has also furnished much interesting information and confirmed much that was gathered at first hand.

Book The Valuation and Investment Merits of Diamonds

Download or read book The Valuation and Investment Merits of Diamonds written by Sarkis Khoury and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-03-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book which deals with the economics of diamonds, specifically with the determinants of diamond prices. The period of analysis, 1978-1983, was chosen in order to shed light on the dramatic drop in diamond prices. The dominant variables causing this drop were the varying price of gold and fluctuating interest rates. Khoury helps the investor in making long-range decisions about investing in diamonds and deciding on the form the investment should take. He warns of the importance to understand the sensitivities of the market and the factors which must be taken into consideration before commitments to an investment in diamonds are made. The book includes: a quick review of the characteristics of diamonds, the financial performance of DeBeers in a declining market, the economic structure of the diamond industry, the method for exercising economic control over the diamond market, the economic variables influencing diamond prices, and the modeling of diamond prices and the testing of the model using advanced statistical methods.

Book The Diamond Invention

Download or read book The Diamond Invention written by Edward Jay Epstein and published by London : Hutchinson. This book was released on 1982 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a popular and somewhat superficial account of the international diamond industry, written by an American journalist. The book is based on extensive reading and investigations, including visits to several mines in Southern Africa, but contains a number of inaccuracies and is not as reliable and informative as the similar account by T. Green (The world of diamonds, London 1981). The major part of the book deals with the role of De Beers and the Central Selling Organization, and chapter 4 "Holding back the ocean" - is devoted to the operations in Namibia. The author describes how the cartel organizes production and marketing on a global scale, and how it has repeatedly interfered in the internal political affairs of African states. He predicts a collapse of the monopoly and the disintegration of the industry, with profound effects on a country like Namibia which depends heavily on income from the export of diamonds. There is also a bibliographic guide to the vast literature on diamonds, mining and marketing (p. 239-56). (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

With more than 80 per cent of the world's diamonds being cut and polished in Surat, India has become the processing house for the world's diamonds. But how did we get here?In The Diamond Trail, veteran journalist Shantanu Guha Ray charts the course of India's rise to domination in the diamond industry.
