Book An Analysis of the Economic Environmental and Ecologial Significances of the Cork Oak Industry in the Mediterranean Basin

Download or read book An Analysis of the Economic Environmental and Ecologial Significances of the Cork Oak Industry in the Mediterranean Basin written by Stephanie Mandana Bahramian and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strong market for cork products has the potential to continue to provide livelihoods for a great many people in the less affluent countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea especially in rural communities-while at the same time supporting healthy forest enviromnents for all living species within those forests and afar. Cork provides vital revenue to help sustain systems that consist of many components; the flora and fauna therein are highly diverse (and sometimes endangered), and the value to livestock management and crop production are at least equal to both the C02 sequestration capacity as well as soil protection in this climatically harsh region. This thesis was driven by the quest to answer the question as to whether the cork oak forest can provide a model for optimal land-use management. Much evidence shows that cork oak forests can finnish many vibrant economic elements, as well as provide ecological sanctuaries for a plethora of species, (both wild and domesticated); in addition, demand for cork products means that the forests can be environmental engines that can help offset the climatic challenges created by other activities in the MeditetTanean region and beyond. Nevertheless, current trends have proven both positive and negative in nature, and an in-depth analysis of the cork industry as well as the cutTent activities within the forests is necessary in order to properly evaluate the viability of the system as a whole. This thesis analyzed the types of stoppers used by the wine industry in Connecticut in order to gauge the health of one slice of the cork market that has traditionally been held by cork as the primmy material. In light of the adoption of alternatives to the cork stopper, this particular research is highly relevant even if one cannot make sweeping statements about the stopper market as a global whole. Au analysis of other end products made from cork, either commercially or for industry, was also performed in order to determine the viability of cork as a commodity were the stopper market to collapse. In both instances, the findings in this study have been more positive than anticipated, meaning that one could conclude that the cork forest may indeed have a healthy market for its primary product. A more extensive study, especially quantifying each type of market, would provide greater value to this study either in support of the findings, or to show how geography matters, along with shifting trends, tastes, and technology.

Book Cork Oak Woodlands on the Edge

Download or read book Cork Oak Woodlands on the Edge written by James Aronson and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cork oak has historically been an important species in the western Mediterranean—ecologically as a canopy or “framework” tree in natural woodlands, and culturally as an economically valuable resource that underpins local economies. Both the natural woodlands and the derived cultural systems are experiencing rapid change, and whether or not they are resilient enough to adapt to that change is an open question. Cork Oak Woodlands on the Edge provides a synthesis of the most up-to-date, scientific, and practical information on the management of cork oak woodlands and the cultural systems that depend on cork oak. In addition, Cork Oak Woodlands on the Edge offers ten site profiles written by local experts that present an in-depth vision of cork oak woodlands across a range of biophysical, historical, and cultural contexts, with sixteen pages of full-color photos that illustrate the tree, agro-silvopastoral systems, products, resident biodiversity, and more. Cork Oak Woodlands on the Edge is an important book for anyone interested in the future of cork oak woodlands, or in the management of cultural landscapes and their associated land-use systems. In a changing world full of risks and surprises, it represents an excellent example of a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to studying, managing, and restoring an ecosystem, and will serve as a guide for other studies of this kind.

Book Cork and the Cork Tree

Download or read book Cork and the Cork Tree written by Giles B. Cooke and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cork and the Cork Tree, Volume 4 provides the important general information about cork based on the author's 30 years of experience with cork, cork trees, and the cork industry. This book is organized into two main parts encompassing 15 chapters that specifically cover the planting and growing cork trees in the United States through the McManus Cork Project. This book presents first a brief history of cork, cork products, and the cork industry. The subsequent chapters deal with the geographical distribution, a description of the tree, its cultivation and the harvesting of the cork bark. These topics are followed by discussions on the botanical aspects of the cork tree, the characteristics of the tree, and the methods of its culture, as well as the physic-chemical properties of the cork. The concluding chapters focus on the manufacture and applications of cork products. This book will be of value to chemists and cork manufacturers.

This book was released on 2023-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Mediterranean basin, one of the richest biodiversity hotspots on the planet, evergreen oak woodlands are essential elements. This book facilitates a more detailed ecological understanding of Quercus calliprinos, a lesser-known Mediterranean forest species that could make an important contribution to the struggle to counteract climate change and biodiversity loss. The book also discusses two further crucial species of the Mediterranean evergreen woodlands, Quercus ilex and Quercus suber, focusing on the role of forest management in their conservation.

Book Tourism Environment and Ecology in the Mediterranean Region

Download or read book Tourism Environment and Ecology in the Mediterranean Region written by Recep Efe and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As humans we have stewardship over the environment. Manâ (TM)s dominion does not mean a license to abuse, spoil, squander or destroy. Future cultures will be able to reach their potential only if this generation remembers that sustainable land use is a combination of economics, ecology and social justice. Our ancestors survived due to an innate sense of â oeonenessâ whereby they helped each other. For them everything was â oeholyâ . Sustaining desired ecological, economic, and social conditions in the system is a big challenge, but not an impossible task. This book presents chapters by scientists from different disciplines from the Mediterranean Basin and its environs. It presents updated information and highlights the way forward for the fields of economy, environment and ecology, making this book a very useful source for people working in these different disciplines. Contributions have been prepared by experts in these respective fields. The book also brings to the fore important future tasks for these particular disciplines, and provides up-to-date references, tables and figures illustrating research findings. As such, this volume is a must-read for students, researchers and professionals in environmental sciences, ecology, forestry, geography and other related fields.
